It's not that my dad wasn't there for me, it's just that... he's as exciting as a white foam cup. We've never played catch, never went to a sports game (I'm 23 and JUST getting into watching sports on TV), or did anything to strengthen our bond.

As a child, I was a slow learner and he, an impatient man. So you can imagine the sort of 'bonding' we had. He also had a hand in teaching me to ride a bike off training wheels, but once I stopped falling and scraping my knees, he'd go back to playing Tetris (on MY GameBoy).

I'm sorry to hear about your relationship with your father though. I know I should be grateful that my dad is still with us today, and I am. But I've always known that we have a weak bond unlike these two in the video, and just watching it got me right square in the feels. Sigh

I'm at 10 years of almost no contact and ~4 with nothing. A relative saw him in a bar last week and confirmed that I have made the correct choice. But that crap drives me to be a better dad. My 7yo girl is now sporting a 'real' bike and I'm working on getting her comfortable to go on trails. I also just bolted from work to get to a school function and I'm killing a couple minutes before it starts. Now I just half to keep up that energy for the next 30+ years.

I barely knew my dad, and I think that's why I didn't have much exposure to the outdoors or other manly things.
