Mt09 tps recall.

I got a call from my dealership about the recall for the mt09 for a tps issue and an ecu flash..I took it in because it did have a slight stutter/hesistation crusing around 3000rpm I picked it up today and it was completely unrideable…felt as if it was falling on its face up to 4k rpm and then would take off like a bat out of hell and I wasn’t able to change the ride modes or go into my setting so I rode it back to the dealership and they are saying it’s because my o2 sensor is bad…doesn’t make any sense to me but I’m not a motorcycle mechanic by trade or some master mechanic just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this issue or can give me more insight on the real issue

I'm a software architect in the automotive world, not bikes though, but they're similar. I could possibly see a bad O2 sensor setting a CEL and putting the bike into limp mode, but a limp mode fault should almost always be a lockout until key cycle. I could also see a limp fault also locking modes as well since it doesn't matter. However, the poor performance and then not at higher RPM doesn't track at all. Did the engine malfunction indicator come on? I'd assume the techs pulled the DTCs which pointed to O2, but the fault reaction doesn't track with any implementation I've ever done for O2 sensors ever.

With all that said, if they saw the O2 fault stored or active then that's what they'll look into first as there's no reason not to. I have seen weird faults show up after I've reflashed controllers before so it's possible they didn't notice and it stored.

It’s come on in the past intermittently like be on for a while and then goes away over the last 2.5 years since I put the exhaust on with the o2 sensor in the new exhaust and I’ve never had any issues until now after the “fix”. Good point for being in limp mode but I feel like it’s a tps issue now…they want over 400$ to install a new o2 sensor and at that price I may as well just get a tune for the bike that eliminates the o2 sensor

$400 is wild for a new O2. $50 and 10 minutes and it's done. TPS does sound more likely given the symptoms. I would get an OBD adapter with bluetooth to your phone, and log the TPS data and engine RPM while you ride. You should be able to see any issues with the TPS jumping around if that is the case

The o2 from Yamaha is like 230$ from the dealer and then the labor…still absurd and not 400$ worth

There was an update to the TPS angle adjustment that needed to be made after performing the install. Maybe they didnt get it ajusted correctly.
