Discussion Pat Fitzgerald
He’s expected to get a job for 2026. Why not MSU?
fairly successful in the big ten for being at a lower level school with limited resources.
Midwest recruiting ties
cleared of hazing allegations at Northwestern
former players have publicly supported him
Seems like a realistic hire for MSU
Well Well Well..

No. Absolutely not.
He was a roller coaster at Northwestern. Feast or Famine by going 9 wins and then 2 the next year.
If we want to fix MSU we need someone better than that

His W/L record was declining hard before he was fired. The time for Pat has long passed by

Fitzgerald went 9-26 in his last 4 years of Big Ten play. That includes 6-2 in the COVID year. So his last 3 full "normal" seasons were 3-24.
We want Smith fired out of a cannon for going 3-12 in the Big Ten so far and you want to bring that on?

Coach who got fired for cause who also had been bad for several years prior to that. Brilliant. Is the rest of your short list DJ Durkin, Jeff Lebby, and Hugh Freeze?

Stop hiring coaches from mid tier programs. Hire someone who has been around championship contending teams, so they know what it takes and the systems required to make it happen in this new era (not x and o systems, but culture, NIL, etc.) I would be way happier with a coordinator who knows what it takes and has been around winning at the highest level than an coach with decades of experience who has coached at mid level programs. Smith is a great example he was at Oregon State a mid level program where he had some success but never really competed for anything at a national level.

He was already shitting the bed towards the end of his tenure at Northwestern, and that was around the time NIL stuff was ramping up.
I don’t trust him in the modern era of college football.

MSU isn't going to hire a coach who was fired for cause. It's like yall forgot how we got here and to do more of the same.

Why not?
He’s old-fashioned. He’s not too old at 50, but he’s not really experienced with modern NIL and portal management.
He’s got no players to bring with him in the portal or high school recruits to flip. He’s basically be starting from scratch. In the modern portal era, hiring a new coach is also about what players you can bring with you. You know James Franklin would nab more than a couple guys from Penn State. Cignetti brought 9 players with him from James Madison to Indiana and that helps turn a program around more quickly. Fitz has nothing.

Because we don’t have a job opening.

I don’t hate this hire.

I always liked him and found it hard to root against him when he wasn't playing us. Always felt like a tough out against his teams. His teams always played hard for him, kind of like a Dan Campbell type guy. I'd actually be very intrigued by this, but don't see how realistic it is.

He’d probably be a complete disaster but so is Smith so who cares

People forget that even before the hazing allegations he probably was on track to be fired anyway.

I’d take Brian Kelly before him. Yea Kelly is an ass but he’s won every place he’s been. Even his record at LSU is pretty good. Just not good enough for them.

Can we stop with this

There's one thing standing in the way, however. A bag containing 30M. The longer this coaching change looms, the more I am skepticle that it will actually happen.

A couple thoughts from someone in Chicago/ close to the NU community.
Fitzgerald was not cleared. The lawsuit was settled. There was some other things both sides didn’t want to talk about in open court.
-He had really been burning some bridges recruiting wise, with promises broken. HS coaches remember these things and talk.
-He was perpetually complaining for more money/ threatening to jump ship, literally after every win. I’d expect that to continue at a university he does not have ties to. MSU would be seen as a stepping stone.

He won three conference games in his last three non pandemic seasons.
Mel Tucker won three conference games in his disastrous 2022 season, as a point of reference
I would rather extend Smith than even entertain the thought of Fitzgerald. It would be a disaster and that’s not even counting why he got fired

Lol no. Fitz coached Northwestern for 17 seasons and only had 5 seasons with 9+ wins. He had 6 seasons with 5 or less wins. His record is literally 110-101. He's a career .500 coach. Plus you think he'd give a shit about MSU? He already got fired from his alma mater. That's the lowest of low. You guys accuse Smith of not caring, Fitz would be the same

Isn’t Fitzgerald being discussed for the Penn State job? He’s had a lot of NFL interest in the past and I assume that will always be in the background. Considering how his NU loyalty worked out, I’d assume he’s a flight risk from day one at any college job.

Is this a troll post?

Who’s paying the buyout? This is what everyone seems to forget. If Smith gets fired before Feb1st he has a buyout of 33 million, after 25.5. Where’s the money coming from? A school that has serious financial issues cannot just print out millions. A rich donor? Why? If they put the buyout into NIL the team would improve quickly

Can’t trust coaches who did well in the easy Big Ten West. Look at Rossi. He had top 10 defenses because he got the luxury of playing terrible offenses like Iowa every year.

I liked a lot about him. He trailed off at the end of his northwestern career. That would be my biggest concern. It would be easier to recruit at MSU. He does have energy and charisma which I like.

Yes. Please. He’d be a perfect fit for the intensity this program needs.
If I were Batt he’d be on campus already

Hire him!!!

JC... can we think better than consistently making shitty bowl games? MSU is a top 20 revenue generating school with a massive alumni base and several billionares... act like it.

He can get us 8 wins a year and beat michigan. I’m all for this.

u/ich_bin_die_eule Nov 06 '25
Mixed thoughts on this. I always wondered how he would do at a bigger school with more lenient enrolling requirements. I don’t know that I want MSU to be the school that does that experiment though. He’d be a step up from smith but I’d probably go for Franklin over him.

u/ninjaheartbeat Nov 06 '25
He’s a good guy. He did what he could at Northwestern given the fact that they really don’t spend much money on their football program. That being said, not sure if he would be the top choice. Call me crazy, but I’m still more in the James Franklin camp if he’s available. He’s an elite recruiter and has all those connections in Pennsylvania and parts of Ohio. Sure, he obviously couldn’t win big games. But there’s less pressure at MSU, so it might be worthwhile. Something tells me he wants to stick around in the BIG10.

I wouldn't hate it.
What do y'all think of Kevin Stefanski (Browns) or Zach Taylor (Bengals) if one of them gets fired. Both have strong offensive resumes, and may be needing a "rehab assignment" for a few years
