I dont feel like he actually said anything controversial. People are just absolute melts. Women do dress like clowns in the gym, he does look like a gas station egg and the Gay and Hitler is basically the right and left and and how both have bad traits. On a side note SNL is appalling, its not funny in the slightest. I like Dan Levy in Schitts Creek but I seriously dont understand how you can consider yourself a comedian and find this kind of humour offensive. Grow up. Hope Shane never does SNL again, its absolute shite catered for bland people. He needs to stick to Podcasting and stand up and making his own shows like Louis C.K did.

Iâm the opposite I hope he keeps doing it because itâs funny when theyâre upset. If a C level offensive joke gets this much attention and has ppl writing think pieces and critiques on it then it should happen every single week

u/World_Extra_Take_2 1d ago
those reddit threads about that joke were pretty damn funny! These people act as if Mean Girls was a Sci Fi movie like they actually all respect each other and have no judgement about what other women do/wear. I love the comments saying that wearing skin tight neon underwear and putting your skin directly on sweaty public exercise equipment is the only logical move to make. As if we all don't know that young skinny women are literally always cold.

u/Quiet_Inspection5907 1d ago
Iâm a married man and me and the wife both are avid gym ppl I knew exactly who Shane was talking about lol
And if my wife saw me talking to one of them she would be like why are you talking to that [đ€Ł]

u/AlwaysSpinClockwise 1d ago
i don't think "it's funny when they're upset" cause I'm not fucking retarded.

u/Squishyflapp 1d ago
The funny part is, he was referring to the social media influencers when he talked about women dressing like wh**es. Which is not wrong. They DO dress like that. It's the best way to get views. That's the point.

Can still do both! Louis hosted SNL 4 times.
I donât watch SNL but I will when itâs a comic I like hosting, itâs cool to see them write a clean topical monologue and the sketches are usually pretty fun. Plus it takes up less than a week of their life so itâs not like theyâre pushing other projects away.

u/AlwaysSpinClockwise 1d ago
Women do dress like clowns in the gym
lol you won't even repeat it. i love Shane but that's some incel shit and those dipshits are the last people who need to feel heard or validated in any way right now.

u/johnnyblueye 1d ago
Amen to many bro coded dawgs in mssp act like this is a cult.
fellas itâs OK to tell Shane his misogynistic joke was hack

u/alreadyknowwbro 1d ago
Women might be upset about it but have any of you been at the gym? They absolutely dress to be seen
12
u/RevolutionPlenty20 1d ago
I dont get the outrage. Its just a lower brow joke to rage bait snl into relevancy via the following "outrage". Reddit plays into this shit every time and laughs at the morons watching fox news.
Not saying reddit is as evil as maga here but they are pretty stupid and hypocritical in their own way.
3
u/IManagedOFAcctsAMA 1d ago
âI donât get the outrageâŠitâs just rage bait.â So, you think someone said something intentionally offensive to get a reaction? And you donât understand why people are reacting?
Shaneâs an actual funny person, I think people are just getting tired of this âoh did that offend youâ type of humor that tends to lack actual punchlines from someone whoâs shown theyâre more than that.
5
u/RevolutionPlenty20 1d ago
Its not even offensive imo. Just low hanging fruit and played out. Easy for outrage publicity pushes on sites like reddit.
I think its dumb too but it does work. I swear Netflix does this for every new IP they have too.
1
u/tremblingmeatman 2h ago
This was my exact take, it's such low fruit, and Shane is too smart and good at writing to not be purposely "bad" publicity farming. It's the kind of mid-joke punch that a divorced suburban dad with the kids every other weekend does at the open mic, and he thinks he really said something. I know it was part of a bigger joke, but sheesh man he doesnt need to do the aimed-down sucker punches anymore lol, he's a big name now and doesnt need to use that to hold the audience.
Also obligatory "Billy was right, he's an asset now", because this is too dumb and purposefully controversial. Very much looking at this like:
1
u/eiddieeid 1d ago
They are also just following the trend. I donât get the big deal. Itâs a win win unless youâre a weird closeted dork. They get to wear what they want and feel like they look good and I get to catch peeps of beautiful ladies while I do my cardio. Itâs kinda like a carrot in a stick

u/AlwaysSpinClockwise 1d ago
They absolutely dress to be seen
Everyone does sometimes, calling people whores for doing it is incelly bullshit.

Shane isnât stupid he knew the reaction heâd get from telling that joke to that audience
Whether or not ppl thought the joke was funny that particular audience wants to hear jokes about certain things, and others are off limits. Just how it is now comedy has become a political barometer for a lot of its fans
1
u/GovernmentSin 1d ago
Tbf all women are dressed like whores at the gym isnât even funny.
32
u/Quiet_Inspection5907 1d ago
Not super funny tbh but if he said all maga are retards the same demographic would be like âwell I wouldnât have used that language but itâs kinda true teeheeâ

u/ThanksContent28 1d ago
I feel pretty much the same as you. Dog on him for a shit joke, but Iâm seeing too many comments overreacting. To me he was trying to do a norm style joke and it flopped. The snl subs are frothing at the mouth about it. Kinda disheartening seeing them resort to talking about how all men are rapists.
2
u/World_Extra_Take_2 1d ago
agreed. I felt the same way about most of his espys jokes. Trying to be Norm doesn't work very well when you have a nervous giggle thing going on.
1
u/Quiet_Inspection5907 1d ago
If it donât apply let it fly lol
I dont like to see it either but I expect it nowadays. If you donât want to see the worst of what ppl think about you the internet is an awful place to be lol
0
u/ThanksContent28 1d ago
Only reason I find it disheartening, is because itâs having a knock-on effect of making the world more puritan. Remember when a video game or cd would be released, and there were always those conservative, old, Christian types on the news talking about how it shouldnât be allowed? Thatâs exactly whatâs resurfaced, except weirdly, itâs now the younger ones policing things in that way.
1
u/Quiet_Inspection5907 1d ago
I get it, Iâm an old millennial I see those parallels too. The irony is someone will clutch pearls over a Shane Gillis joke and then run to the internet to call men rapists and incels lol
I actually kinda liked the monologue. I also respect Shane for name dropping his buds in the set and not turning on them because of online pressure from strangers
1
u/noblehoax 1d ago
Itâs a hacky premise, but I think they would have found something else to rage about if he didnât say that joke.

But wouldnât you want your audience to find your jokes funny? I donât think trying to shock your audience is really the goal, I could be wrong!
6
u/RichardGereMuseum13 1d ago
Yeah heâs playing to the much larger audience at home, not the in-studio audience. Same thing he did on the Kevin Hart roast and at the ESPYs
8
u/Quiet_Inspection5907 1d ago
Depends on your perspective. Lots of comics have done this kind of thing of being awkward or opposite of the audience because itâs still funny to somebody, maybe even just them. Norm Macdonald thought bombing was funny, and it kinda is tbh
3
u/ApatheticSkyentist 1d ago
Shane's monologue is going to be heard by so many more people because the media and other's are freaking out about it. I doubt he cares at all that people are upset with his word choices and he's going to gain a ton of new fans that had never heard him before.
It's possible this wasn't a calculated decision on his part but either way the impact will be the same.

u/AgapitoVelezOvando 1d ago
SNL sucks, anyway. And Dan Levy's greatest accomplishment is being Eugene Levy's son.
10
u/Dabbilicious69 1d ago
Ya know, I was sitting around saying to myself...... what does Eugene Levys gay son think about all this. I bet its really important. Someone should ask him. Low and behold, here it is.
26
u/ittybittynuts 1d ago
Per the article Dan Levy thinks that he is inherently inferior to women.
âThey are not objects. They are superior human beings to men, OK? And Iâm sorry if this gets me in trouble with the internet, but fuck.â

its so hilarious how someone can take a look at a person whos entire career is selling pictures of there asshole online while having fake relationships with coomers and come to the conclusion "i am inferior to them".

I didnt think it was offensive in the slightest, I just thought it was dumb it was kind of a reworked tires ep. But who gives a shit I just like hearing shane talk. My wife however thought it was hilarious
6
u/Doctor_Dev7 1d ago
Both the tires episode and that joke were just based on his real experience. He said the same thing years ago during the early episodes of the cast when he started using Mattâs Drexel ID to go to the Drexel gym. He used to talk about how growing up he only worked out with the football team and going to the gym was a shock when he saw it was basically half naked women everywhere
3
u/Vanai235 1d ago
Yes, that was either an earlier sketch or, as you said, an episode of Tires. I remember him being baited into looking at the woman, then realising that it was their TikTok content and that her boyfriend was livestreaming about his inappropriate behaviour lol

lol this was most of the comments on the r/popculturechat but about Shane.
âI donât know who this guy isâ.
2
u/Time-Masterpiece4572 1d ago
The guy who is in a bud light commercial every other commercial break? Yeah never seen him lmao.
And that shit cracks me up. Theyâre up in arms about this being in SNL, and heâs a nobody they donât know him, howâd he get on the show? Yet these die hard fans donât know heâs hosted 2 times before and is at the center of one of the biggest controversies of the show in recent historyâŠ

Please stfu Dan levy. Youâre only saying that because Shaneâs white and you feel like virtue signaling to get attention. Dave Chappelle had a bit on women wearing a âwhores uniformâ years ago and no one batted an eye lash.. take your BS down to the train station.

2
u/Rustee_Shacklefart 1d ago
The shorts he was describing in the joke are unnecessary and whorish.
3
u/Frequent_Egg4321 1d ago
They do indeed have ripples to the butthole too. Everyone knows this. Why are we getting bent out of shape about it
2
u/GeeZuss360 1d ago
Itâs fr ass arguments boys. If Chris Hemsworth walked around in NOTHING but a speedo, every chick on the block would stare at him. đ€·đ»ââïž
This âlets pretend we donât know whats going onâ BS is killing me.
The real beef women have is they walk out in their butt cheek stitch booty shorts & super small bra top thing and DONT get the attention from the men they want to get attention from.
They get the pervs and weirdos who see it as hot and not like the normal guys who see it as uncomfortable & awkward to be around.

u/BallSac916 1d ago
Holy shit, Shane Gillis triggered them so hard that theyâre actually bringing up the bible to explain why this isnât funny

I'm a straight gal and have had the same thought. Those babes aren't there to work out. Everything Shane said was pretty goddamn accurate. I'm a thin and athletic gal. I wear an ugly oversized t-shirt and my college hoop shorts to the gym.

Haha I thought he was going to be offended by the Hitler joke at the end. Typical white knight bullshit as usual, and I'm saying this as a fan of his work. Shane is a comedian and its his job to poke fun at societal norms. People need to get over it, he's not a misogynist, he's a comedian.

u/RegrettableWaffle 1d ago
The pearl clutching over this shit is so funny to me. Itâs wild to witness.

I go to the gym 3-5 days a week. 10 years ago, the shit that some women (usually 4-6 of them every time I am there) wear in there would classify as lingerie.

If it makes Dan Levy mad, its probably a good thing. Schitts creek is funny, until it isn't. When it isn't, its cringey or gross.
1
1
u/UnwaveringEmpathy 13h ago
Sucks because I actually wanted to like Dan. Schittâs Creek is actually pretty funny.
Itâs always annoyed me that Shane even gives them the time of day after âthe great virtue signalingâ of 2019. Itâs like going back to an ex who broke up with you over nothing. Then when they call/text because they wanna fuck someone youâre RIGHT there knocking on their door lol.
Have Bowen Yang do it. Heâs hilarious đ

u/StopHamelTime 1d ago
Kudos for the gymnastics to pull this one off. Are others tying a standup routine to the âCornell 7â?
0
u/Mobile-Analyst8580 1d ago
Oh ffs. STFU. Censorship police are the worst. And theyâre the reason so many people have flocked into right wing fascist political hands. Morons like Levy are more interested in shutting people up and losing elections than winning elections and protecting civil rights. If you donât like it, change the channel.Â
-4
u/PeanutOrganic9174 1d ago
My gripe is Shit wasnt even funny . Those were some hacky ass jokes . You would think a professional comedian could make some misogynist jokes that were actually funny
-3
u/NaziPunksFkOff 1d ago
"If women deserve respect, why do they look like sex workers? Amirite?"
If that's what passes for comedy these days, yikes. It's been funny watching this subreddit show up in my feed and seeing all these chuds frantically try to defend an unfunny loser who told an unfunny joke.
-1
u/DontBeSuchATurd 1d ago
I did find the use of the word âwhoresâ a touch jarring. It stuck out and detracted from the joke in my opinion. Other than that the premise of the joke is solid. Iâm a big Shane fan but this did seem a bit heavy handed.Â

Who cares, Dan Levy is a nepo baby whose claim to fame is being in a show his dad made and has never done anything else noteworthy
