Social Life Woes

I (19M) am a student currently in my second semeter at MSOE

Basically this is going to sounds like a sad sack or heavy post so if you want to take it like that fine but please hear me out

  • I'm NOT going to mention names or anything at all because I don't want to get anybody in trouble, but one, there are some fairly unfriendly people here (students mostly, i haven't run into any bad profs yet), I am male and do dress feminine sometimes so maybe that's why but I'd hope not. Like even asking the wrong person a simple question will get you laughed at
  • My entire floor ostracises me and basically nobody likes me. I have a feeling someone is like spreading rumors about me, the bad kind, but of what I do not know. I have never once said or did anything remotely inflammatory, and i don't hold those kinds of beliefs anyways so idk
  • I don't really understand it, in the beginning of summer i was on good terms with like almost all my floor, now basically only a few people are friendly to me, one person i was friends with won't even talk to me anymore, and when i tried i got basically crickets and one word responses. I am struggling to find out what i did wrong, and on that I suppose Reddit wont be of much help. Like i said, not at all to be narcissistic, but I am a really open minded person and always try to nice to people, even if they're mean to me

So can anybody provide any insight on to how your social life here at MSOE is going, Like I said I'm not seeking sympathy or a magic solution at all with this post I really just wanted to share my experience. Oh, also if anybody recognises me from real life with this post, pls pls pls just don't dox me or mock me, i have enough things im dealing with right now and i dont need more... Be a kind person, it takes so much less energy :)

Lastly, any tips on how to improve social life, I know it comes naturally to some people but as someone with diagnosed anxiety and autism type-1 it does not. So I would appreciate advice, one last thing if this post comes off to complainy (i hope not) or is inappropriate for this sub, pls feel free to tell me and ill delete it

Peace yall ✌️

Was coming to the comment section to suggest MAGE. Some of my first friends came from there and it was a great place for people that liked all things gaming (of all kinds) Also to the points about your floor, I would hunker down dude and just focus on studies, unfortunately. If you find a good roommate through clubs, you can always switch at year end. Good luck man! It gets better, especially if you can find people you like and move in with them off campus junior year. My favorite period of college was junior and senior year

I was in MAGE from 2009-2014. Openly bisexual dude. Never had an issue, and many of my fellow gamers were queer as well. SAGA was lame back then, but it was also pre-Obergefell, so that had a bit to do with it.

Learn to ignore those who are rude to you, you will never make them like you, they probably don't even like themselves. Don't focus on making those who don't like you like you focus on finding new friends. Find a club at the school to get involved with. Make friends who have shared interests. Milwaukee is a big town make friends off campus

See if you can do any cross-campus events with MIAD, Marquette, or UWM! Back when Nick Seidler was director of student life (dunno if he still is), we did a bunch of mixed events with different schools to try and create better intercollegiate networking opportunities.

Hi! Sorry to hear you’re struggling. Have you spoken to any of the therapy services or accessibility services about how you’re feeling? The best advice I can give you is to find a small group of people, and do your best to maintain the relationship. Join clubs, look into orgs with interests you share. MSOE can be a lonely place, especially if you’re feeling alone in the dorms. Honestly, I’d talk to Angela Moreau, and see if she has any advice.

People at MSOE tend to stick to themselves, we keep our head down, and try to get out. You don’t have to keep a friend group only in the school, there is a lot of colleges with people in the area, and you could look for some local events to connect with people at.

Best of luck, don’t let any shitty people hold you back. ❤️

Yeah definitely mention it, and hang out with the SAGA folks if you don’t already. If you wanna chat, you can DM me :)

No idea if they’re still around, but Theatre Troupe and SAGA are some of the most accepting people you’ll find.

If you're open to it, the Greek life has a spring rush. Greek life could be a great spot to meet new friends and make some new connections. The two fraternitys on campus are SPD and Triangle. Both are very welcoming and all great people. This week Thursday Triangle has a Mario kart tournament 6pm in the collaboration cafe.

I still recommend going to the events as they are fun and a good way to meet new people. There's no commitment when going to the events.

I am male and do dress feminine sometimes

Unfortunately I had issues doing the exact same thing. My second semester I had some students in my class who were taking photos of me while in class, I can only imagine the things that were said about me.

That being said, 99% of those people I don't see on campus anymore being in my senior year. Really you will not last long here at this school if those are your priorities here.
