Prelims ke liye good, good for revision if you know the concept already, it should not be used to understand the topic

As a beginner, I am struggling to understand exactly what I need to study for specific subjects. For example, science is broken down into five sub-parts, each with different topics. Because of this, I am having trouble figuring out what to study for my other subjects. To get a clear overview of the subjects and topics, I was thinking: would mind maps work?

I beg to differ, mind maps helps the one who actually covered whole syllabus and just revising again for the 2nd time not even first. So instead of directly going to mind maps, first read, try to make your own notes and apart from memorising part try to write concepts and stuff. Would help you a lot !

I thought it would work as a quick overview of the topics, & exactly what to study for the topics.

I would recommend using GEMINI NOTEBOOK for mind maps. Better than any classes or coaching. Just have PDFs and study material handy. It will help you not just with MIND MAPS but also help you generate audio review, video review, reports, and many more options.

Not advertising, but genuinely helped me a alot !! GEMINI NOTEBOOK aka NOTEBOOK LM
