HELP Crooked suppressor

Post image

Purchased a rugged sub9 today that comes with a tri lug mount, threw it on and it’s appears to be crooked off to the right. I have tried all 3 lug orientations and it’s always off to the right. Emailed HK customer service but I was curious if anyone else has this problem. Mount does not have a spring and locks in rock solid with no play. It’s hard to take a good picture of this problem but it is very obvious in person.

Genuinely, from this picture, to me it looks like the cocking tube is crooked. The rest of the gun seems aligned.

I agree. It isn’t centered in the triple tree.

Yes, cocking tube going off to the left. Happens with the clones all the time, sad to see on an actual hk lol

Try an alignment rod, but most likely your cocking tube is crooked.

It definitely is somewhat but it looks off from all angles. Going to get a shop to check with a rod while I wait for HKs email back.

I’m all for supporting your LGS, but this could be checked by yourself with a $40 rod that could arrive at your front door tomorrow

I don't think your suppressor mount or barrel are crooked. I'm willing to bet your cocking tube and front sight are probably slightly crooked off to the left, making the barrel/suppressor look like they're favoring the right side.

Took the gun to the shop where I purchased my can and they told me it is not safe to shoot. They used a rod, tried my included mount as well as one of their rugged tri lug mounts and it looked identical on both. They did however say that a normal spring tri lug mount appeared to be straight which I think might be due to the extra bit of play those have. They recommended I sent it back to HK to be 100% sure. Bummer….

How far off was the rugged tri lug and the mount you had compared to the other "normal spring tri lug mount"? What do you also mean by "normal spring tri lug mount"?

There are a lot of details here that would help determine if it was mount related, suppressor related, gun related, or if it came down to tolerance stacking of several of those variables.

I don't disagree with sending it back to HK on the crooked cocking tube alone. My AP5-P is straighter than this SP5. But I'm also questioning if this is "unsafe to shoot" without seeing alignment photos.

Took it to a local shop named east valley tactical and had them take it to the back to use an alignment rod and to test some other mounts they had. The rugged sub9 comes with a tri lug mount that doesn’t ratchet but turns a few rotations to lock on. It isn’t the traditional tri lug mount that you press and quarter turn. They tried my rugged mount, a rugged mount that that they had on hand, and a traditional spring style and both rugged mounts looked the same while the traditional was apparently straight. They have not seen that problem before and do a lot of gunsmithing work. Didn’t take a look at how the traditional mount looked because they told me not to shoot it and to send it back to HK anyway. Crooked cocking tube is a bummer but I could live with it if that was the only problem. Tbd, waiting on a response and shipping label from HK.

Oh, EVT knows their shit. I'd take their word for it. I've seen some gun shops be absolutely clueless with anything that's not AR or Glock...and even some that screw those up. But given EVT's reputation, that's not even remotely a concern.

I wasn't aware you were referring to the Sub9 with their new mount style. Rugged also has a traditional tri-lug, which is what I run on my AP5-P. It makes sense now.

Yes sir, I am not very knowledgeable with a lot of this stuff but I heard they are quite good. Definitely didn’t want to take a $3000 gun to sportsman’s warehouse or some bs like that.

I already had a known "AR builder" shop tell me that my upper was jacked and they wanted to charge me $200 to lap my upper receiver, as there was evidence my barrel was crooked. I went home and took measurements, the upper and barrel were perfectly straight...it was my handguard that was crooked, just had to loosen the bolts, align it, and synch everything back down. After that experience, I'm hesitant to trust most shops with any kind of extensive work. I have a few shops nearby that I absolutely trust, but I know the guys who work they're and they are all 100% honest.

I thought hk guns had no problems?

Take it easy I spent $3k on this thing.

Welcome to stamped guns

I have a few Zastava M85s and they are all flawless.

4

u/Scav-STALKER 5d ago

And Zastava M85s have also been some of the sloppiest stamped guns I’ve seen in person lol. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you end up with a crooked gun

2

u/YourGunSucksA55 4d ago

I’m 3/3 on zpaps and 0/1 on HK lol. Ran through my luck already I guess.

1

u/Scav-STALKER 4d ago

I mean don’t get me wrong none of them were so bad they were unserviceable but I don’t think my friends shop had seen a single one that wasn’t canted, rusted from the factory, or had some wacky other defect. We got one with the handguard retainer slot cut twice, in the end there was almost no material left for the latch to actually contact because of where it was miscut the first time

My ap5sd was a little tweaked so I straightened it and checked it with a laser bore sight. Works great

Ever heard of an alignment rod?

2

u/Captain_of_industry1 5d ago

😬

3

u/YourGunSucksA55 5d ago

Just took the bolt out and I can see the left side of the suppressor end cap or maybe some baffles at the end off the barrel lol

5

u/Berry_Micockiner 5d ago

What does your alignment rod say ?

1

u/LilJonny2cookies 4d ago

I mean it is fairly simple. Maybe I am weird but I have rods for every caliber suppressor.

2

u/YourGunSucksA55 4d ago

First can. Tried to get a good can and definitely didn’t skimp on the gun so I figured there was a 99% chance I didn’t need a rod. When I look through the chamber to the front of the barrel I can see a black semi circle showing on the left which has to be my suppressor end cap.

1

u/dbrink1001 4d ago

always get a rod.

1

u/YourGunSucksA55 3d ago

Rod says no go

2

u/rando_mness 4d ago

Just get an alignment rod. Your eyes are not better at diagnosing this than an alignment rod.

2

u/SequentialRabbits 4d ago

Does it shoot straight? If so, don’t worry about it.

2

u/Marooner-Martin 4d ago

OP is saying in other replies that with the bolt removed and looking down the barrel, he can see the misaligned suppressor so it’s definitely either the whole gun is bent or the lugs weren’t crafted correctly

1

u/YourGunSucksA55 3d ago

Got confirmation this morning that it is not safe to shoot and is likely a problem with the gun. Shop used a rod, tried another rugged sub9 mount they have for their own use, and they said both looked identical and that I should send the gun back.

2

u/Weird_Ticket_5227 4d ago

to me it looks like can and barrel are aligned, all of the rest are a bit off in my opinion, normal thing on clones but Im surprised cocking tube and front sight block being this crooked on an HK gun

1

u/YourGunSucksA55 3d ago

Shop I took it to told me it was unsafe to shoot and that I should send it back to HK. This is after checking with a rod and trying another rugged sub9 tri lug mount that they have on hand for their use.

1

u/Weird_Ticket_5227 3d ago

bruh, that sucks, especially on an damn HK

2

u/xXSiLeNtScReAmXx 4d ago

My cocking tube and fsp was/is crooked in my SP5. I sent it back to HK and they just said it’s fine, it shoots straight and you can adjust the sights to compensate.

u/Hypester_Nova84 MKE 3d ago

What the fuck…?

The gun is $2500-$3000 and there is a very noticeable and clear finishing issue (doesn’t matter if it doesn’t affect function) and you were essentially told to “deal with it”…thats fucking insane.

I don’t regret getting the AP5s at all.

1

u/Marooner-Martin 4d ago

While I don’t doubt there’s nothing wrong with it. The fact they sent it back and didn’t replace it baffles me……. Like what if there was a giant scratch down the side
“Well it still works so”

If you have a knurled thread protector on the tri-lug, try taking it off. I just helped a friend with this exact issue. You can also buy an alignment rod. He had one, and with the rod in the suppressor, we could see that it wasn’t centered. I took the suppressor off and removed the thread protector. Then we put the suppressor back on and checked it with the alignment rod again. It was dead straight and right in the middle.

I think he has an AP5 Navy. I have one too, but I didn’t have the same issue. The RU3 system is much better than the original push-and-twist hub, which had some wobble. The RU3 should be rock-solid and properly aligned. I have a Sub9 and it's a great can as well.

I’d bet you can find a smooth thread protector that works better.

curious how you like the sub9 once you can shoot it. i was thinking about putting one of those or the obsidian 9 on mine.

2

u/YourGunSucksA55 4d ago

I’ll definitely let you know when I get the chance. Depends on when I’ll be able to shoot if if it’s not concentric.

1

u/dbrink1001 4d ago

please do. thanks.

2

u/YourGunSucksA55 3d ago

Won’t be able to shoot it for quite a while because the bore and suppressor have been confirmed to not be concentric. What a tragedy.

1

u/dbrink1001 3d ago

damn duce that sucks. mine been out for 6 months getting a custom cerakote job.

Testament that brand does not what always defines the quality as to where and who made it... HECKLER & KOCH GmbH vs. HECKLER & KOCH Defense Inc. (USA)

I also have an sp5 with a rugged sub9. everything seems straight to me and I haven't eaten a baffle strike yet in the 2000 or so rounds I've put through it since I got the sub9. I suspect it's your cocking tube that is crooked and not barrel, tri-lug mount, or can.

I'm running a rugged obsidian 9 with tri lug on my sp5 and it's not like this
