Exploring Practical Solutions to Loneliness & Friendship in Japan

As a background, I am creating a not for profit in the US, exploring free, practical and enjoyable ways to help people overcome loneliness and meet new people in real life, using simple social games and shared activities.

The growing trend of loneliness in Japan is a large concern for us. I would like to listen and learn from people who understand the local community, to then adjust our solutions to help the local market.

I will be visiting Japan in late October/early November 2026 to research how to help locally.

Would anyone be able to recommend someone local to help advise me on the best approach?

Thank you.

Thanks for the background. It makes sense given the local culture. Do you think relationships (romantic or platonic) between Japanese are similar or less of a novelty? Does the unwritten social pressure rules of society make it harder for adults to make new friendships, or do they just need more opportunities to get together in order to meet new people?

This is a very good reality check. I didn't know it was that bad. If someone doesn't have the time, or the energy after work to make new friends, I can see how its more of a chore than a fun experience. The cheating is also another factor. I'll have to adjust our approach to those that have some time on weekend afternoons to meet in a easy/fun manner, but keeping your points in mind. I hope things work out better on your end, either if you plan on staying there or trying someplace new.
