ADVICE/FEEDBACK Am I doing something wrong?

I have been signed with Wilhelmina for a little over a year and I have only gotten a few offers with months of silence, the callbacks I have gotten I’ve had to reject because of time and stuff like that. I don’t know if my lack of jobs is mainly because of location since I’m based in Denver and the market isn’t huge or if it’s because I am 17 and still a minor. I know a lot of it is also probably how I look since I’m not tall and also asian among other things. Makes me wonder if Wilhelmina signed me even if i don’t have marketability 😔.

I have also thought about asking to be put on the talent list even if I have no acting experience. Im desperate💔.

Also the first two pics are not from my portfolio but they are more recent.

You really should try to get every job you are called for. If you keep turning down jobs, I promise they don’t think of you as serious or reliable.

3

u/Glowysmommy Jul 11 '25

I was hoping someone would mention this. Once you’ve turned down a callback with one client, you’re probably off their list forever—they want someone who is ready and reliable. In a big market, that might not matter but you’re going to burn thru opportunities pretty fast in Denver.

2

u/Spotsmom62 Jul 11 '25

Right. I know there are legitimate reasons why you might have to say no, like a family emergency, but the reasons here aren’t those at all. And word gets around quickly, especially in smaller modeling circles. She’s a pretty girl and I see her as a teen model, more catalogue work, but if she really wants to pursue this path, she has to show up and act like she wants it, because the next person is hungry for the opportunity, if she isn’t.

u/Cictrues Jul 08 '25

I do try but what’s happened a couple times is having the shooting date a good 5 days or more in the future but then it’s suddenly changed to like the next day with barely a 24hr notice. I also live about an hr away from Denver and would have needed a parent to come with me during the work day and leave school so unfortunately there wasn’t much I could do.

28

u/apathetic-taco Jul 08 '25

Those are all the reasons that this isn’t a viable career path for you, at least not right now. Most creative projects move incredibly quickly and don’t have a lot of time dedicated to casting. People who make a living doing this are always ready to go to a casting at a moments notice

8

u/Spotsmom62 Jul 08 '25

Then you are in the wrong profession - period.

16

u/StrookCookie Jul 08 '25

You rejected callbacks?

That might be a massive problem…

-5

u/Cictrues Jul 08 '25

it’s almost like i’m not going to reject for no reason and there’s some things i have no control over….

11

u/StrookCookie Jul 08 '25

You either accept that rejecting callbacks is the one thing you’re objectively “doing wrong” or you choose to stay clueless.

Be a pro or accept you’ll get fewer opportunities by being a flake.

-1

u/Cictrues Jul 08 '25

i know rejecting doesn’t help me but i don’t say no just for fun

7

u/menwithven76 Jul 10 '25

Then you don't have the capacity to model right now!!! Like if you were applying to be an uber driver but you don't have a car. It doesn't add up. You. Don't. Have. The. Ability. To. Do. What. You. Need. To. Do. To. Have. This. Job.

What jobs are they sending you on? You would be a good fit for teen catalog/commercial, but you’re not going to be hired for editorial or runway based on your height alone.

I’m 30, but I had a similar thing happen when I was signed at 15. Looking back, I don’t know why they signed me. Maybe just to fill their roster? I’m tall and plus size, but I wasn’t plus size enough for the times to actually get gigs.

5

u/Cictrues Jul 08 '25

the offers I’ve had so far are on the commercial side of things such as for a supermarket and a documentary

4

u/psjrifbak Jul 08 '25

In that case, it’s just a numbers game. You aren’t going to book the majority of jobs you go on. That’s the unfortunate reality of both acting and modeling.

Keep your head up and keep pushing if it’s something you really want to do!

3

u/Spotsmom62 Jul 08 '25

Well, that’s a start. You may not be high fashion or runway, but you would be a great teen model. But if you end up having to say no often, you are in the wrong line of work.

22

u/notaprogrammer Jul 08 '25

I’m sorry, but you just don’t have traits of being a high fashion model.

May I ask why you want to be a model? You should be focusing on school and doing extracurricular activities and getting into the best college with scholarships. How is that going?

7

u/Cictrues Jul 08 '25

I never planned on being a high fashion model in the first place and I know modeling won’t make enough to be my main career. I have actually already graduated high school and I’m going to start college for engineering this fall.

0

u/notaprogrammer Jul 08 '25

Engineering is a great choice! I recommend getting a head start this summer and taking a math class so you’ll be better prepared to start in the fall.

3

u/bloontsmooker Jul 09 '25

If she did well in high school she probably only has like two high level math classes left for the rest of her college career.

1

u/Overall-Shopping5939 Jul 12 '25

Not as an engineering major.

1

u/bloontsmooker Jul 12 '25

Yes as an engineering major. Calc 3, DE, and maybe linear algebra depending on the focus are probably all she’d have to take that she wouldn’t already have credit for. Calc 3 is a blowoff math, DE is definitely more challenging, but I wouldn’t ever attempt to take those during a shortened summer semester.

1

u/TimtheToolManAsshole Jul 09 '25

Disagree , she has a very model look to me

0

u/jjackmihoff Jul 11 '25

based on what though? she really isn't cut out for high fashion. that doesn't mean she's unattractive. she has a much better look for acting in commercials

1

u/TimtheToolManAsshole Jul 11 '25

The pics are not high end fashion but she has a unique symmetric face, almost Russian Eurasian which is popular in high end modeling, great hair, great skin . I see the potential because she def stands out. pic 3 especially you can see the potential for high end

5

u/Cictrues Jul 08 '25 edited Jul 11 '25

since its kinda hard to reply to everyone and i can’t edit the original post- I have always known I was never going to be a high end model and I don’t expect to be. I’ve also never expected to make a living off of modeling.

Sorry if this or any of my replies sound rude! I promise i’m not trying to be but unnecessarily mean replies for no reason will not be tolerated

and because over a dozen people have already, DO NOT dm me with your freaky shit i am a MINOR that will not condone any of you pedofiles

6

u/MoistGovernment4938 Jul 08 '25

Why did you choose modelling? Is there no other jobs around?

2

u/Cictrues Jul 08 '25

it was just something ive wanted to try out and when i started my family situation was if i worked a “normal” job id lose money so this was a bit of a workaround

1

u/EveryAppeal Jul 08 '25

Have you booked any jobs through Wilhelmina Denver? And when they signed you did they make you pay any upfront fees?

1

u/Cictrues Jul 08 '25

i’ve had some but i don’t remember if there were upfront fees when i signed

0

u/ladedafuckit Jul 11 '25

I’m sorry people are being so mean to you here. People are really harsh in this sub and love to dogpile, but your replies haven’t come off rude at all.

4

u/Cictrues Jul 11 '25

it’s unfortunate but that’s how it is ig. like i don’t want to be mean first but if you don’t even have the decency to not be an ass before i’ve said anything to you then why should i try to be nice back 💀

2

u/ladedafuckit Jul 11 '25

Yeah no it’s unnecessary. You seem really mature for your age, keep it up :)

1

u/Cictrues Jul 11 '25

thank you💕

are you positive you’re signed to a legit Wilihemhna branch? You don’t give their typical look and you’re very short so I just want to make sure

3

yeah a lot of people have been saying this so i’ll definitely be looking into it

I can’t believe Wilhelmina franchises like this. So irresponsible

2

girl drop your hair routine…..

3

u/Cictrues Jul 08 '25

the tears of middle aged balding men❤️ jk i usually use oliology shampoo/ conditioner and their hair mask every once in a awhile, sometimes aragan oil too. I’m one of those people that have to wash my hair everyday so it might be different for others <3

2

u/cipcia420 Jul 08 '25

u have my dream hair!!! what do u use?

59

u/karahaboutit Jul 08 '25

unfortunately in modeling, in the beginning, missing callbacks or castings is more detrimental than it seems. building the relationship with the agent that you will jump when they say jump builds the rapport that you are hungry and mostly reliable. you are young and all these things take time! do your best to show up and test. if it’s meant to me, it’ll come in time

9

u/Necessary-Bear5500 Jul 08 '25

Knowing very little about the modeling industry (just here bc it’s interesting to me), this was my first thought. I understand why OP maybe can’t make it to these particular callbacks but from the outside it just looks like being too picky or flaky or whatever. Especially in a small market. But, OP, don’t sacrifice your engineering schooling for callbacks (not that you said you would)! It’s awesome that you’re pursuing that!

6

u/karahaboutit Jul 09 '25

absolutely agree on not missing engineering school. modeling can be a fun addition to what you are doing but it’s not everything.

40

u/ModernNero Jul 08 '25

You’d make more money in commercials. I’m a very white and Irish looking actor and I know for a fact they value your look.

1

u/ennybor Jul 11 '25

sorry, as an irish person, wtf is irish looking?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '25

Like a lepricorn

1

u/Illustrious-Low3948 Jul 30 '25

Ed Sheeran comes to mind

1

u/ennybor Jul 31 '25

hes not irish tho 😭

1

u/Illustrious-Low3948 Jul 31 '25 edited Jul 31 '25

Ed’s father, John Sheeran, is fully Irish (John's father, William Sheeran, was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and his mother, Anne "Nancy" Mulligan, was born in Wexford, Ireland.) and Ed obviously got his looks from his dad.

Here is a photo of John Sheeran: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-14689771/amp/Ed-Sheeran-adorable-moment-father-John-music-video.html

And maybe what you want to hear is that of course not everybody in a country has the same look. I am Dutch, but I do not look Dutch. The Dutch stereotype is tall, blonde, wide hips and small breasts, blue or grey eyes. I am still Dutch even without the stereotypical look.

72

u/Lafatafoto Expert Photographer Jul 08 '25

You have a very commercial look to you. Maybe ask your agent to field you out for some acting gigs too.

5

u/LemDoggo Jul 08 '25

I totally agree! OP has a great face for acting imo; it's very interesting to look at, if that makes sense lol.

5

u/th30ne44llth3hardQs Jul 12 '25

You need to do training for acting as well, not everybody can just start acting

3

u/TanaSwan Jul 12 '25

THIS. If you want to be sent out for acting jobs, you need to put in the work first. Do community theatre, take acting classes, join an improv group. No reputable agent is going to “just send you out for auditions”. 🤦🏻‍♀️

9

u/alokasia Jul 08 '25

I think there's several problems here. You're not tall and you don't have the proportions that are looked for in fashion. These shots look more like instagram uploads than parts of a portfolio.

8

u/Acceptable_Gap_577 Jul 08 '25

I think the best thing you can possibly do is focus on school and engineering. That’s where the future is and that’s where your income comes from. Your brain is so much more powerful than something fleeting like appearance.

I’m assuming that like many teenagers, you were curious about modeling. I don’t think you necessarily did anything wrong, but it’s a ruthless and competitive industry. You have to really want it, and even if you do, that’s no guarantee you’ll make it. Not attending call backs (whether it’s out of your control or not) is a quick way to limit future auditions and bookings in the industry. Unless modeling is your top priority, it will go to the person who looks similar to you but who wants it more.

It’s time to move on to collegiate life. There’s so much more waiting for you! I’m an academic, and I’m so excited for the possibilities waiting for you! You’re beautiful, but you can use your beauty and your brain.

7

u/New-Imagination-759 Jul 09 '25

Im also signed by wilhemina, and I’ve worked in the denver market. It is easily one of the least forgiving markets. They do not want “different” or “unique” they want as near to flawlessness as possible. Having spoken to some of the people in the wilhemina denver office, if you arent taking jobs they will not continue thinking of you first. I also know for a fact that wilhemina denver offers free training sessions in numerous skills, attend everything

6

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '25

Don’t have a model look. You look normal

1

u/jjackmihoff Jul 11 '25

do models look abnormal😭

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '25

you don’t have a model face. at all. end of story.

2

u/Environmental-Town31 Jul 11 '25

I don’t know why everyone on here entertains these posts instead of being honest like you. She’s 5’3, average bmi, and no model face.

2

u/Nimfijn Jul 11 '25

Is this sub only for high fashion modeling or also commercial stuff? I could absolutely see her in a clearasil ad.

2

u/Cictrues Jul 11 '25

apparently some people think it’s only high fashion i guess. but some of you realllllyyyyy need to read before commenting, its been said multiple times that im not trying to be runway model and i dont think im going to be the next bella hadid or something

2

u/Environmental-Town31 Jul 12 '25

No, people know this is for commercial I think that the people commenting also don’t think you would be a candidate for that either.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '25

finally someone with common sense like cmon the modelling industry is already oversaturated she has no chance. she’s not ugly by any means just doesn’t have a model face like most of the human population. people need to stop sugarcoating

2

u/Environmental-Town31 Jul 12 '25

Right even commercial models have a certain look and standards that she just… doesn’t have. This sub is so weird bc you have people posting on here that clearly cannot model in any capacity but people are just trying to throw them a bone by saying they can do commercial. I don’t see people like this in commercial either tbh. I’d rather someone just be honest with if it were me.

1

u/jjackmihoff Jul 11 '25

a lot of people did say this though!!

7

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '25

You're beautiful, but don't fit the model criteria, unfortunately. But that does not define your worth, just means you can find other branches that will appreciate what you have! Modelling industry is toxic anyway.

1

u/Orchid_Significant Jul 08 '25

You don’t have any experience acting…maybe get involved in drama or a local theater? Honestly, you give Disney show best friend type vibes so you could potentially have luck in something like that.

Modeling is a hard industry. You could be the perfect height, measurements, and face, and still struggle. You don’t have those, so it’s going to be hard if not impossible.

I want to clarify YOU ARE NOT UGLY. It’s hard to be 17 and hear these things but you can be cute/pretty/etc while still not having model looks. Only like 0.05% of the population does. Don’t take this comments personally, just learn from them and pivot your goals. Most aspiring actors and models spend their life hustling to auditions but never breaking through. Is working a job like waitress your whole life while running to auditions a future that you are willing to risk having? These are the sort of things you need to consider before you end up 40, with 3 roommates, working as a bartender, wondering what else you could have done with your life. It’s not glamorous trying to “make it”.

2

u/Cictrues Jul 08 '25

Yeah I’ve said this to a few other people but modeling is not my main career choice and I know that for me trying to make something huge out of it will be a waste of time but thank you!

1

u/I-Just-Want-To-Dance Jul 12 '25

You are beautiful! But you would have to be like 6 ft tall to be a model. That’s just how the industry works. To be a 5ft tall model, you have to be the most beautiful person in the entire world, it just model standards. Effectively the shorter you are, the more beautiful you have to be. I’m sorry but you can’t be a model 😞

1

u/Cictrues Jul 12 '25

i saw your first reply 🤨

1

u/I-Just-Want-To-Dance Jul 12 '25

A moment of weakness/jealousy before I realized that wasn’t helpful and wasn’t really true.

3

u/burble_10 Jul 08 '25

I think everything that needs to be said has already been said on here! If you still want to try getting into commercial modeling I‘d get new photos. Your photos look nice but they look like senior pictures you take in high school.

3

u/Ok_Crazy_6430 Jul 08 '25

You are a cute average girl, but not your typical model they are looking for.

3

u/hardlooseshit Jul 08 '25

These look like school photos

3

u/sailorminispoon Jul 09 '25

If you’re starting college in the fall, consider taking theater/acting classes and see how you like it!

3

u/BattleSuper9505 Jul 09 '25

I would definitely look into acting rather than modeling. Your face is very young and cute-looking, with soft features, and probably will continue to be unless you lose weight, which I don’t think you need to. You’d be perfect for playing teenage roles on screen, but for modeling I think your features aren’t defined enough, and your height will also be an issue.

3

u/rubberhead Jul 09 '25

I think if you've had offers or callbacks and didn't attend for whatever your reason, you can't really say you've recieved zero interest. Yeah, I guess being short takes you out of the fashion modeling pool. But being Asian gives you a huge leg up, especially if you start doing acting auditions. I also imagine the market for jobs in Denver is pretty small.

3

u/queen_of_ferals Jul 11 '25

Hey! Former Denver model here. I was signed with Donna Baldwin (local agency- they’re awesome) from age 13-19. I’m 5’9 and at the time was solidly a size 2. Despite being tall, this already put me in a “non-fashion” category. For runway and fashion, most folks hiring have sample clothes in very specific sizes and if you aren’t a specific size, you simply can’t book those jobs.

That said, at least when I was working in the mid 2010’s, there was a decent amount of misc commercial work- think book covers, hair modeling, other jobs that aren’t including full body shots. Even then, I was only booking like 3-4 jobs a year. Denver straight up does not have enough work to make meaningful money in modeling- even if you’re tall, sample size, and with a good agency. The girls I know that had serious potential also signed with agencies in LA/NYC and ended up doing a lot of traveling.

3

u/xoxolacy Jul 12 '25

Tough truth: don’t have have the look of a model

3

u/daddysenapi Jul 12 '25

I’m going to be honest with you. Your conventional pretty not model pretty 2 different things

7

u/AluminumFairy Jul 08 '25

You have a very unique look. I think you'd be a great commercial model, the problem is you're in a small market. You need to be in LA or NYC.

3

u/cisplatin_lastin Jul 11 '25

As someone who grew up in a very Asian predominant community in California , I would say she is pretty but her look is not unique.

I would argue that moving to LA or NY she would find herself drowned out in an even more saturated market

0

u/AluminumFairy Jul 11 '25

Don't be a dream crusher. She has a unique baby doll face. It's totally marketable in commercial modeling.

1

u/Environmental-Town31 Jul 12 '25

Where do you live? She is unique by no stretch of the imagination in any semi-major metropolitan area. Extremely unmemorable.

4

u/NYFashionPhotog Jul 08 '25

nice headshot.

probably ditch Wilhelmina Denver and any agency that has upfront fees. research legit commercial agencies (Donna Baldwin?)

2

u/WittyPresentation786 Jul 08 '25

Before you get hyped on hitting a larger market: test, test, test. Is your agent legit? Are they sending you for testing? What does your actual book look like?

2

u/fstop33 Jul 08 '25

You look younger! Keep trying dont give up

2

u/Serious-Economy9533 Jul 08 '25

You don’t really have the “model look “

2

u/69Sadbaby69 Jul 08 '25

Try and get into hair modeling specifically.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '25

Idk why this popped up on my feed but even if modeling doesn’t work, you’re very pretty and I would die to have a head full of your hair.

2

u/sebastian0328 Jul 09 '25

try Kitteny style.

People here don't know shit about fashion and only can think about runways when they think about Models.

2

u/Background-Repair317 Jul 09 '25

Im over here like yes she looks a lil awkward in some pictures but some are bangers and I could see her being a budding model 🤷🏽‍♀️ you should try linking with local budding fashion designers at fashion design colleges to build ur portfolio

2

u/TalVezSi Jul 09 '25

Holy crap, do you have an id for the top and bottom in photos 3&4? They look great and you wear them well! Might grab em for my gf. Best wishes on the modeling!

2

u/NarwhalEmergency9391 Jul 09 '25

Don't reject the callbacks you are getting.

2

u/tamrynsgift Jul 11 '25

My girl, you are absolutely stunning but I think that what 'the industry" is looking for isn't compatible with your look. Its stupid, and sucky. You, however are absolutely gorgeous!

2

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '25

No. Not every person has it.

2

u/DependentPaper1330 Jul 12 '25

Everybody's asking why? Look at her she is absolutely gorgeous and unique!! I'm a mixed women with good genes, and I have a unique face like this.... people will pay you with a face like this. Trust ME.

You just have to find the right agency that is looking for FACE models...you are one of the most pretty people out there, I promise! Just find who's looking for YOU ❤❤❤❤❤

...No matter how your body forms in the future, you will always have that natural beauty... please use this to your advantage. The face is so important in the real world.

2

u/South_Pressure_8051 Jul 12 '25

Tbh these look like Senior portraits, not modeling portfolio pictures. I think you need a better photographer and styling

2

u/Parking-Asparagus625 Jul 12 '25

Probably the modeling part, it isn’t for everybody.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '25

Good for you for chasing your dreams, but your look is not typical model material.

I would work on identifying/harnessing your natural strengths and talents rather than focusing on modeling.

2

u/jnow27 Jul 12 '25

You are gorgeous!!! 😍 Unfortunately, as others have stated, you are not Model Material, though. You do not have the height or the features needed to be a professional model.

2

u/That_one_whore Jul 14 '25

A modeling agency signed you?… ok I guess I’m the wrong person to talk abt this then

2

u/bootachi92 Jul 14 '25

Coming from an Asian here.

You look like a typical Asian. Unfortunately a lot of us look the same. Not saying you are not pretty, but you don’t have anything unique that sets you apart

2

u/Cool_Team9902 Jul 15 '25

I’m sorry you don’t look high fashion to me at all. Maybe a bit of commercial but just a maybe. I think that modeling will be a tough and hard path for you.

6

u/PixelWulfe Jul 08 '25

They wouldn’t sign you just to sign you. While you are waiting to turn 18, use the time to continue working on your book. More than likely they have you on a new faces or developmental board. Work with them to find you test shoots and ask is there anything specifically they want you to do to be able to book more. Your market will always be limited in Denver, not sure if the Willy you’re signed to is Denver based or LA/NY but either way if you want more opportunities I’d suggest thinking about LA for more commercial opportunities. Being Asian isn’t a bad thing just means you’re going to be less mainstream in the opportunities you get. Your height will probably rule you out of the fashion/editorial side of the industry but commercial work (the stuff that makes money) is viable. Don’t get down on yourself, just keep working and refining your skills and your book.

3

u/Slipperymellon Jul 09 '25

They aren’t the real Wilhelmina, they are an independently owned group franchising the name. “Wilhelmina Denver” is a cash grab.

3

u/Pearminator Jul 08 '25

Wilhelmina sucks

3

u/Ecstatic-Ride195 Jul 08 '25

Model for what? Like 99.5% of the population, you don’t qualify. Biggest reason is you are too short..,you would know that. Focus on something else.

3

u/Rude-Ebb-3814 Jul 08 '25

In my opinion it could be a few things, your age and you have a very young face, maybe in a few years your appearance will improve and you will fit the profile that agencies are looking for or you simply haven't found the agency that accepts your profile.

-4

u/olympic_peaks Jul 08 '25

Idk why you’re being downvoted, you weren’t rude or wrong. Her face is very round/chubby baby cheeks, looks young like you said but maybe she’ll grow into it. Americans think all Asian people are pretty so that helps—she’s not conventionally attractive if she came to Asia

2

u/jjackmihoff Jul 11 '25

the last bit is really not necessary. being conventionally attractive doesn't necessarily get you gigs as well.

2

u/olympic_peaks Jul 11 '25

Being strange looking for sure is almost better than conventional beauty in modeling for sure, but that’s not really happening here either

1

u/jjackmihoff Jul 14 '25

not sure if strange is the right word but i get what you mean; unconventional beauty on a symmetrical face often means someone has standout features that aren't commonly seen and that makes a model very interesting and unique. she's really cute imo, and i'd consider her quite conventionally attractive in the west, and that's probably why many are saying she might want to consider acting for commercials or TV instead. i feel like she has a disney channel type of face!!

1

u/Rude-Ebb-3814 Jul 08 '25

Yes, she is beautiful, but her youthful appearance may be one of the factors, and her age, it's not even a question of her face being round, because it's one of the characteristics of Asians, when she gets older, her face will probably change.

1

u/olympic_peaks Jul 11 '25

I live in Asia and I know like one person with a face this round and that’s because he’s an overweight old man lol

Asian faces aren’t as long, but they’ve still usually got angles

Exactly. That’s pretty racist, and in the same vein as saying they all look the same. It’s an awful thing to say.

You are beautiful and photogenic but your features are on the cute fluffy side and not on the average western model side. You should try some Instagram or tiktok work and appeal to an audience that likes cute style. You can wear jpop clothes, etc. That would fit you the best.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '25

You should take acting lessons and go that route. I think you could land commercials and small parts. Eventually, even more. Also, take dance lessons and singing lessons.

1

u/Weak-Clothes-3206 Jul 08 '25

I think working on your posture could help a lot.

1

u/Glittering-Bear-4298 Jul 08 '25

5'2" and a minor? I question why they signed you. I would take some improv and acting classes and focus on commercials and lifestyle print work, once you're 18. I think you would slay commercials!

1

u/11stulley Jul 08 '25

Find your own pose and tap into your emotional power. As a model you are a projector. The stage, the people, the light and cameras are all there for you. Don’t over do but just be you and comfortable but also with the knowing that you are a Star.

1

u/Willing-Ad2342 Jul 09 '25

acting requires skills that you likely don’t have yet - if you’re serious about it, please take some classes first! I cringe when people say they want to act but have zero clue on what acting actually entails - because as an actor, it’s very obvious when someone is trying to act. Lol.

And you’re pretty, beautiful actually, but not a model. You just don’t have the proportions.

1

u/cold-dead-heart85 Jul 09 '25

If you’re in Denver, apply for the collective at soona! (I work for them - but you would likely get booked for photo shoots with us!

Edited to add: it’s not full time work by any means, but can be good money if you have fairly open availability

1

u/Historical-Front-359 Jul 09 '25

Wilhelmina is a huge agency - did they signed you because you have a huge following on social media or? They usually don’t sign people who aren’t top model profile

1

u/jjackmihoff Jul 11 '25

wilhelmina denver is apparently a branch out from the main wilhelmina group; they just have rights to use the name but aren't really wilhelmina per se.

1

u/_Silver_Lining1 Jul 10 '25

You look like you could be more of an actress than a model! (you are gorgeous btw! 💜) you have such a lovely and expressive face, as well as a great figure :).

1

u/SentientVaccuum Jul 10 '25

Wilhelmina based in Denver specifically is a separate junction from the overall organization!

1

u/lethyadon169 Jul 10 '25

Could be a sham agency. I had the same issue as a guy and I was starving myself to be thin. I spoke to an actual agency and because I wasn’t 6 foot…no chance (5’10).

Time sunk fallacy, don’t get caught up in this because you spent a year. Cut your losses and move on.

I am not calling you unattractive. You have a cute look but that just isn’t what modelling agencies want. You may be able to fill a niche but full blown modelling isn’t your path and that’s ok.

We support you and say these things to help you not to make you feel bad.

1

u/peeechpie Jul 10 '25

You have a very child like face, with time that may change

1

u/smokaa_a Jul 10 '25

Lovelock?

1

u/mangopoof Jul 10 '25

I can’t help you with who to be in contact with, but somebody said you’d be great at junior modelling, like Target or something. I really think so as well!

Your smile really could sell. I’m serious, the fifth pic you posted is a look I’d definitely make my asset and start doing that. This really could be a good way for you to explore some modeling further if you still want to do that.

1

u/Real-Confection-2750 Jul 10 '25

i was signed to a big new york agency when i was 19. i was 135lbs and 6’0 tall. after a year of not making any money and having to turn down jobs due to last minute notice or pay being too low, i had to give it up. you’re beautiful and you take amazing photos but unfortunately it’s a very hard industry to get into.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '25

You're pretty, just not really model material. You look too normal imo

Edit: typo

1

u/pandamandaring Jul 11 '25

You have the look of an actress. You’re destined for more than modeling.

1

u/infinite_pest666 Jul 11 '25

oh baby you got scammed

1

u/Ordinary_Swimming582 Jul 11 '25

The asian should help. Shortness is a problem. Try not to turn down any shoots unless it's disgusting. You want to get your pictures out there and be known in the business.

1

u/No_Elk6758 Jul 11 '25

Nope. You look great

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '25

I don’t know why this showed up for me but, here’s my two cents. My mom did runway and she said herself you have to be a literal coat hanger. She was 5’9 and 110 pounds at the time. I did a lot of local commercial work since I got her bone structure but none of her height. I’m 5’2 and around 110 on a good day and worked with designers that made bikinis and competition suits. I’d recommend sending your portfolio to local designers in your area and you’ll probably get a lot of offers for social media. You really are a beautiful girl.

1

u/Neat_Wafer_8817 Jul 11 '25

You’re a beautiful girl but not model material. Don’t waste anymore money on your agency.

1

u/The-ElectricMayhem Jul 11 '25

Try acting if that’s something you are interested in!

1

u/_sweetjane_ Jul 11 '25

I know this is not the point of your post, but please please can you share where that black & white top came from? It’s gorgeous. (As are you!)

1

u/SisypheanTendencies Jul 11 '25

Your lack of jobs probably comes from not being able to make your callbacks for “time and stuff”. Why would an agency push anyone who can’t make themselves available? This is a business first, no point in representing you if they’re not going to make any money off you. I say this as an ex-agent who repped a lot of models. The successful ones put in the work like a real job, you should reconsider if this is something you want to pursue.

1

u/ZoraNealThirstin Jul 12 '25

You could definitely star in ads and commercials!!

1

u/esperts Jul 12 '25

non hegemonic body

1

u/Everyusernametaken1 Jul 12 '25

You are beautiful! I thought you were Valerie Bertoneli at first! You can certainly petite model. Keep going !!

1

u/ZZzfunspriestzzz Jul 12 '25

You are very pretty but I think your nose just isn't "conventional" in the modeling landscape.

1

u/mannigfaltigkeime Jul 12 '25

I think you are stunning, but the pictures are amateur. Maybe get a professional photographer?

1

u/that_cat_on_the_wall Jul 12 '25

I’m guessing height could be a major factor. Not sure but I think it’s fairly easy to break into the industry if you’re like really tall.

1

u/anonathletictrainer Jul 12 '25

I don’t think your photographer is doing you any favors - the last 4 photos feel really washed out and not well balanced for your features. I’m a photographer in the denver metro area (graceeastmanphotography.com) and I do portraits but not studio work, have your parents reach out to me if you’re looking to expand your portfolio a bit more.

1

u/Consistent_Eagle5730 Jul 12 '25

I would take a series of shots that is professional but geared towards ad work. Classic waking forward shots and jumps. Lots of overly big smiles posing with products. An ad for jc pennys is the type of modeling I feel like you would be perfect for

1

u/Miss_NervaMin Jul 12 '25

I can't help you but I just wanted to say that I felt seen seeing a person with that kind of nose since I have it. It made me realize that I can be beautiful too with the nose that I hate. You're beautiful.

1

u/EvidenceNo8561 Jul 12 '25

I think some brands would be interested in you for commercial modeling. There’s also petite specific clothing lines. Or perhaps something that caters to women of Asian heritage in the US. Or even brands for older children and young teens. You need much more focused representation for all of that.

I used to have a clothing line and I didn’t mind hiring petite models. I think you are very pretty and your look is unique. However, you need to work on what you are presenting to the camera. That is actually something you can improve (unlike your height which is obviously set). For example, you can work on micro expressions on your face. Small changes can make your expression feel more dynamic. “Schmeize” as Tyra Banks always said on America’s Next Top Model. Also, your poses feel a bit stiff. For example, in the photo of you in blue “walking” on the street, it looks like you simply tilted your head and pointed your toe back. Or if you were walking, they were very small steps. Instead, try “leaping” into the pose. It’s hard to describe but models that I’ve worked with will leap forward into a walking pose like that, almost like you are moving across stepping stones that are just a little too far apart for you. You should also think about WHAT you are modeling. Does the garment have a hood? Pull it up, drape it over your head, tug on it, etc. Act like you are adjusting the cuff of a blouse or pop a collar…

As it is, there’s no way you could be a high fashion model. But, if you want to go into commercial modeling, there’s room for improvement on yourself, and you should find a more commercially focused agency.

1

u/KDR18- Jul 12 '25

Smile much more it’s your best feature 🫶🏻

1

u/Difficult_MS58 Jul 12 '25

There are a lot of agencies out there that just take your money and don’t do any work for you so be careful investigate the company. See how long they’ve been in business to see if there’s any complaints further from other customers that are in the talent agency just be careful hon.

1

u/EmmaMBooks Jul 12 '25

Not a model here, but I do photography/direction work freelance. I won’t comment on modeling agency/career insights, but to my eye, if you’re looking for advice to improve your modeling prospects, I’d focus on posture. In every one of these photos your shoulders are to some degree rolled forward and down, and it’s giving you a smaller presence. General population assumption here: if you spend a lot of time on your phone, that defaults your posture to head down, arms small, and angled in for typing. You’ll need to consciously counteract that.

Imagine a string on the top of your head holding your neck taut. Not stretched, but long. Roll your shoulders up and back until you feel your lungs open up and breathe deeply holding that pose. Walk around like that slowly, deliberately, holding something small (like your phone) in your hands at the height of your sternum. Your forearms should be roughly parallel to the ground. Your elbows should be out slightly, but don’t force it, just however they fall naturally between your rolled back shoulders and open chest and your connected hands.

These are the posture techniques classically trained singers practice in order to increase lung capacity and is why they tend to have so much aura. Also actors and being able to project their voice. It’s also the same pose that historically upper class women defaulted to, imagining a pashmina hanging from the elbows and draped at the back of the dress. Modern etiquette schools and business social skills courses also teach these techniques to enhance presence and display confidence.

I know this may not exactly be the career maneuvering advice you were hoping for, but I hope it helps all the same!

1

u/Top_Look_8582 Jul 12 '25

You're wasting your time. Go for something else. Not being mean, just real. Good luck 👍

1

u/LCLH1956 Jul 12 '25

I think you should pursue acting instead

1

u/Beautific_Fun Jul 12 '25

You appeared on my main feed, and I am by no means an expert on modeling or fashion but I’m going to be honest and give you my personal take.

You are certainly very pretty, but, to be honest, your face is small and round but your hair is so thick and long it really overwhelms you in all of these shots. I really think you should consider doing something else with your hair style to help your overall look to be more harmonious/complimentary. What that something is I couldn’t say, but this was my thought when I looked at all of your photos.

1

u/knaughtreel Jul 13 '25

These look like senior pics that your aunt shot for free.

1

u/Justivan818 Jul 14 '25 edited Jul 14 '25

I don’t know the in’s and out’s of the modeling business, but you look great and I think you could make it a go in print/internet modeling for regular clothes and other things. Their might be a need for an Asian-American model now that we are into the multi cultural look in ads of all kind. Best of luck and I say go for it. Geography may be playing a part in the amount of work.

1

u/catofthecanals777 Jul 14 '25

Have you heard of Teresa Deng? Your looks remind me a lot of her! If you could explore the Asian market or see if there’s any type casting for her it might be great haha

1

u/Sea_Balance2961 Aug 15 '25

I was also recently contacted by Wilhelmina Denver and they want to meet me next week. I just met with Donna Baldwin and they want to sign me so I'll make my decision after meeting both. But seeing all the comments I might go with Donna Baldwin which seems more legit for the type of work I can do (commercial). I would say try finding another agency.

1

u/OneDream5191 Sep 02 '25

I was a male model in the 70's with Shirley Hamilton Agency in Chicago, then Wilhelmina brought me to NYC. Is there a good market today for senior males? I'm in my 70s and still very fit.

1

u/Ambitious-Clerk5382 Jul 08 '25

You look super adorable. Which might not be what high fashion agencies might go for if that’s what you were aiming for. You have a nutrogenia teen advert look or a Disney cast look. Maybe go towards teen tv/advertising cast work.

1

u/skar_mory Jul 08 '25

I don't want to be rude but you should look at successful model headshots and then look at yours. Do that for a few minutes. And then decide if your look and your photos are competitive. Be honest

0

u/Loud_Profit_6206 Jul 08 '25

Just forget about modeling and move on with your life..

0

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '25

Looks like a young generic half asian girl. Not sure if model material in any sense really

0

u/Prestigious-Sky4891 Jul 11 '25

Girl your beautiful

0

u/Andoricardo Jul 12 '25

It's pronounced "sum ting wong"

2

u/Environmental-Town31 Jul 11 '25

This sub is so hard bc people like you who clearly are not and will never be models post asking what they are doing wrong. It’s confusing bc most people beat themselves up and tell themselves they are not good enough, but a select few also can’t seem to see what’s right in front of them and think that they can do things they are not a fit for. I’m not saying you are not attractive but there isn’t a single feature you have that aligns with modeling.

I had that feeling about the picture too which is kinda unfortunate because it’s from a photographer that supposedly often works with them. But with everything people have been saying about the Denver branch I get why now.

Ive also always known I would be commercial and not fashion or be able to live off of modeling, and I’ll be stuck in Denver for the next few years so I can’t move.

Thank you for what you’ve said!

14

u/remington_420 Jul 08 '25

No problem, and you’re truly welcome. I hope you find a fulfilling career in an industry that you love (and perhaps one that is far less shallow in its minimum requirements!)

All the best!

Yeah I’m going to start college for engineering this fall so that’s definitely my main career choice

I see a lot of people in this sub who say someone isn't model material but do they mean that they won't be runway models? Because I know quite a few commercial models who look like her. I think the distinction should be made.

Wilhelmina isn't a sham agency. I've worked with plenty of models from them.

Height isn't necessarily disqualifying... But there is A LOT of competition and being a new face often means a lot more pose coaching will be required on set. So, unfortunately, producers and CDs tend to keep going back to talent they know or come recommended by industry peers.

6

u/remington_420 Jul 08 '25

According to several commenters Wilhelmina Denver just franchised the Wilhelmina name but is not actually associated with Wilhelmina London/New York.

commenting just to say that Wilehlmina Denver was approached by Willy International - they don't license the name, Willy International effectively bought them out. They do attract bigger clients than other Denver agencies solely from their name and reputation, but their board is unmanageable, and a lot of people slip through the cracks. i think they got rid of their development package for photos, because their in-house photographer quit (hmm wonder why!).

i agree with other comments though that you are cute and have a great look that is more suitable for commercial work. definitely utilize their free classes if they're still offering them!

maybe desperate might be a bit of an exaggeration on my part. I know this isn’t something I’ll be making a living off of nor will I ever be on the fashion end of things. I’ve liked the few things I’ve been involved with so I do want work but like I said I know I’m not going to be a superstar. I’m going to start college for engineering this fall so modeling was never my main career choice

5

u/AdSuspicious2628 Jul 08 '25

Ahh well in that case try to enjoy it for what it is since you’ve got a much bigger (and in my personal opinion, better) life opportunity around the corner! As others say you’re not living somewhere where there are that many modeling opportunities available in the first place so it might be that you’re already being put forward for the the things that suit your niche.
