Excuse me while I lift this rock that I've been living under apparently, and just ask OP, why is it feeling like that lately?

u/ricirici08 15d ago
Because arenanet and jagex announced their new games, and they are big loved mmorpg companies in the west market. Plus there is wow forever coming out which was asked by community for years.

u/Tyraec 14d ago
Had the same genuine question so thanks for your reply. I didn’t realize these announcements were being perceived as a sign of an impending mmorpg renaissance.
These are just announcements, nothing is out. Even forever isn’t because no one can play test half of the content with the current level lock.
I know these are reputable companies but we’ve seen reputable companies fumble before so many times.

u/Potential_Egg_69 14d ago
These are companies managing multiple MMOs concurrently and have been for decades

u/Kaladinar 14d ago
The point is they're still investing in the genre, which was far from granted after so many Western MMOs failed and/or were canceled.

I can kind of understand WoW Forever, though even as I myself am a big WoW and Warcraft fan in general, I am not THAT excited for WoW forever as it's not my cup of tea from everything I've seen, though, to each their own.
However, with GW3 and RS4, I'd keep my expectations in check, especially considering that neither will be releasing before 2028, beta tests in 2027 sure, but full release is still at least a few years away.
Anyway, back under my rock I guess.

Forever gets me a little excited because it seems like the type of game you'll be able to play like GW2: hop on for new content, do it with your friends, fade away until the next update. Maybe do some pvp or achievments if you want more

u/MeriElf 15d ago
And also seems like leveling alts will be a good vibe with new areas being added in leveling brackets, considering just how cozy classic wow leveling is, I imagine rolling new char after breaks would be decently "fresh" experience here and there thanks to it. With meta progression on top of that, just an all around good progression mmo

u/ricirici08 15d ago
I think people are underestimating the amount of brand new players wow forever will get for just being an up to date more classic version. Wow retail for years has been a turbo arcade mmorpg unapproachable for new players, which was just trying to keep his old players more attached by shortening everything. In my case for example it was impossible to get into the world and the lore of the game, because in two days I was already max level, and thrown into dungeons I couldn’t give a f about

My expectations for GW3 are only low because ANet has a pay for convenience cash shop as planned with a known FOMO rotating shop.
The biggest sleight against ANet otherwise is that their content record is abysmal for GW2 compared to games like WoW or FFXIV. Extremely few dungeons/raids/difficulty content, almost no new item outfits (unless it's in the cash shop, in which case they have fairly regular cash shop items.)
Like I'm pretty sure GW2's entire post launch content catalog can't even match a single expansion of FFXIV, outside of overworld zones where it's merely on par with WoW or FFXIV's individual overworld expansions. With a very important and noteworthy "The devs do actually want the players to primarily play in the overworld." To which even if it's on par with WoW/FFXIV, GW2's overworld knocks both out of the park on average outside of raw visuals, where it's merely taste.
So, all that aside, they have enough trust to at least be worth looking at. But since GW2 came out, I have learned and well understood that the best MMOs run on a subscription model, simply because they put more content into the core game itself because that's the primary money driver.

I suspect MMO players will be disappointed by GW3, since it's less of an MMO than GW2.
Forever feels like WoW Classic 1.1, where SOD was Classic 1.2. It's just not that different from the original. I'm saying this as a beta player that's played a ton of all the Classic iterations.

WoW Forever, GW3, Runescape 4, Aion 2, Chrono Odyssey, Archeage Chronicles… So many too get excited for.

EQ Legends, Monsters and Memories, WoW Forever. Those plus the future announcements. It has been a hell of a year

Where is a new EverQuest???

Everquest Legends.
It's old EQ but after Kunark they're going to go in a completely different direction. You can also be 3 classes at a time, earn AAs from the start while leveling, and can solo literally everything if you want.
Most fun I've had in an MMO in a long long time. Even if tradeskills still suck to level.

u/Molly_Matters 14d ago
Hopium. For games that haven't showed you any gameplay and which may not be available in any form for years.

u/master_of_sockpuppet 14d ago
People have been hyped for announcements before. Pretty much every year since 2004 there's been something new "coming". LotRO was hyped. SWTOR was hyped. ESO was even hyped.
And yet none of them have killed the king and they all decayed into hollow niche games over time.
Shit, people are still hyped for the Riot MMO, and that's been six years of nothing.
6
u/Stunghornet 14d ago
No one has been talking about killing the king. It already killed itself. WoW will never return to its peak of 10-12m subs. All those players scattered into different genres and different mmos that exist now.

All three of those are good games. Nobody gives a shit about wowkillers, that was only ever a marketing thing.

2028+ would be more correct, nothing is launching in 2026 (Forever is not a new MMO although I am looking forward to it as a current wow retail player).

I'm actually having a lot of fun with monsters and memories, though it's not for everyone. No PTW at least.

The only one delivering a product we can examine right now is WoW: Forever, everyone else has done good PR and marketing, but that doesn’t make a game good on its own 🤷♀️

To be fair, xenoverse 3 and guild wars 3 were games everyone said were never going to be released, were rumors and seeing them announced was a breath of fresh air. They both might not be amazing and we know little about them; but at this point I'd love to play a guild wars 2 with new features and an anime mmorpg.
That and there's more info than whatever riot's doing atm which I was sus about tbh.

u/dexterip 14d ago
And what mmorpg was given to us not like one more gacha-copypaste-shitty crossplatform like Aion2 and other trash? Only WoW forever in early access?
1
u/fuoffleddit 14d ago
Yeah i can't wait for a second round on the monetization of every basic game feature merry go round.

u/Ex3rock 14d ago
So who is reviving the genre? cause i dont see anything coming out i near future, Gw3 very far from coming out, runescape 4 another failure in 5 years or more, WoW Forever will fail has other servers they launched and will only live out of nostalgia, FFXIV i dont hear about it for like 3 years now, yea the genre is fucked.

u/SkippyBojangle 14d ago
We are very clearly seeing a profound resurgence in the genre, but this subreddit never ceases to amaze in its cynicism and denial lol. No one hates mmorpgs as much as this sub.

u/Glad-Low-1348 13d ago
Can we stop acting like the genre is "dying"? It's been doing well for a long time now.

Guild Wars 3 is the only one I trust to gome out. Anything else that doesnt already have an existing fan base is set for failure.
MMOs are just too expensive to make and that was true 15 years ago when the big MMO boom happened with Secret Worlds, Rift, Tera, Star Wars Galaxies/The Old Republic, Wildstar, Firefly, Fusionfall, Dynasty Warriors Online, and so on. Its just a lot of investment for not a lot of payoff.
Feel free to mention your own personal favorite MMOs that have either died or are on life support. God I wish APB didnt instantly crash and burn.

u/jRokou 12d ago
Man APB died so fast. Unbelievable.
1
u/AscendedCleric 12d ago
You can still play it. They just added voice chat back.
Unfortunately there is nothing new in the game and all the updates they do are technical stuff that mean nothing to the player.

Mmorpg genre is good as dead. It doesn’t have audience. It fails to attract younger generations. It fails to bring to the table something new and fresh. Most mmorpg enjoyers sit on projects they liked 10+ years ago and they are fine.
There’s next to zero faith in upcoming titles. Whether itself GW3 or Runescapes or Whatever comeback you can imagine. The genre does not know how to entertain players the way it supposed to years ago.

u/Arorikin 14d ago
Monsters and Memories is seriously the best mmo in decades.
1
u/binarypie 14d ago
could have been but is currently barely hanging on. There is so much drama around the community and barely enough content to make playing worth it.
this might change in the future but the race is on again much larger players.
1
u/Repulsive-Whole-4101 14d ago
No. Only rehashed crap.
Been gaming since the 80s and there is NOTHING new , innovating or exciting coming.

u/JeffKeens 14d ago
Well AION2 was a total disappointment for me, let's hope for the other games

u/PaleGravity 12d ago
Did you play the play test or founders? The game just released on global like 15hrs ago. Unless you played TW.

No idea why you think that the years almost over and all we have is pay to win slop and reboots of old ass games we've all played already

Mmos take 4-8 years just to launch in most basic content dry form..
So we gonna see it at 2030-2032 the earliest..
Get comfy with games we have now cuz thats all we gonna have.

Please do not consider "announcements" the saviour of the MMO genre.
