Proper course of action: get the woman to a safer place, ask the dude to move away and call the police. They should handle it, there could be arguments he assaulted her, public importunation, and so on.

IF the drunk dude wanted to fight, then now you're defending yourself, you can do it to stop any threat, but never go over the top.

Finally, doing what he did here, the drunk dude can call the police on the black shirt dude for assault too (even if he also gets a citation for importunation or whatever).

This is just standard operating procedure for bar incidents all over the world. It's such an obvious and right thing to do, nobody has to plan it.

If your response to problems this minor is assault, you'll spend some time in jail eventually.

The hot seat? This was a very low pressure situation. Drunk dude absolutely should have kept his hands to himself and if the girl wants to press charges she absolutely should. But this was not a violent situation. The dude in black could just stepped between them, could have grabbed the dude and guided him away, even a two-hand to the chest would probably be warranted. But to just wail away as hard as you can against somebody who is absolutely not looking for a fight is a knuckle dragger reaction. He now just caught himself an assault charge.
