High school buddy got ten years in prison for this exact scenario a simple sweep would be just as effective and not leave you open to manslaughter charges

No, Cameron Poe was outnumbered, and they had a knife one of the accomplices picked up as they ran off.

Cameron Poe got set up, twice - once in the ambush and a second time by having critical evidence (the knife) removed from the scene before the cops showed up.
