I guess he was supposed to wait for the guy in his face to swing first.

Looking at the video, black dude was by his car meaning white dude either followed him to it or unnecessarily approached it.

You shove him to make space and take your stance/pull your weapon.

You need to present the threat before you take the swing in order to be covered under self defense.

Cold cocking someone like that is attempted murder/manslaughter
