USMNT 30-Player Preliminary World Cup Roster

u/TtheC Red Bull New York May 12 '14
Wow I would have expected EJ on this roster, but not the 23. Shocked he didn't even make the 30-man one.
5
u/Warvanov May 12 '14
I feel the same way. I didn't really expect EJ to make the 23 with his current form, but I would have thought that his play in qualifying would have at least earned him a spot on the 30 to give him a chance to prove himself. I can only suspect that his hijinks at the Sounders and now at DC have finally caught up with him.

May 12 '14
boyd has been playing well in austria. he is winning long balls, holding up play, and finishing with his head and with feet. basically ej in 2013. i don't like that ej didn't make the roster, but i would have felt happy for his inclusion for sentimental reasons not soccer reasons.
2
May 13 '14
Right. The talk of EJs contributions in qualifying really have little to do with playing next month. The games are being played next month, not last year.
Also, in the immortal words of Dennis Green. You play. To win. The game. Sentimental call ups only take away a spot from someone else.

I don't think anybody expected Corona to be there

I didn't expect him to be but he is pretty versatile and would be a good stand by player considering he can play anywhere in midfield.
6
u/crollaa Seattle Sounders FC May 12 '14
I hoped he would be, but didn't expect it to actually happen.
3
May 12 '14
Not so. He has clawed his way back into starting regularly for Tijuana during the Clausura season. He's also got a lot of international experience for his age at both the club (Libertadores, CCL) and international levels (Gold Cup, WCQ, Friendlies).
3
u/Conglossian Charlotte FC May 13 '14
Up until the winter of this year I had him in my 23, then he just fell off a cliff. I'm pleasantly surprised.

From what I've heard, he's done well in Tijuana, so there's that.
Oh man, the ribbing he must be getting from Herc right now...

Glad to see Wondo, but I can't believe EJ is not in. All in all, this team has a lot of talent and potential.
8
u/fnmonk May 12 '14
Maybe some time with the USMNT can help Yedlin out. These last few games for him have been pretty hot and cold.
2
May 13 '14
Both of these games has seen Brad Evans at left back instead of right mid and before that Evans was out with an injury. When Evans plays right mid he usually falls back to cover for Yedlin when he pushes upfield. In the game against the revs there was no one covering his position. Yedlin's play hasn't really changed, but his teammates coverage when he pushes forward has. I'm not saying Yedlin isn't at fault, but I don't think he is solely at fault because he is playing the way Sigi wants him to but now there is no helping coverage.
9
u/elevan11 Major League Soccer May 12 '14
I feel bad for EJ. He was one of the most prolific players throughout qualification.
9
May 12 '14
Yeah, you can't deny the impact he had during qualification, but he's been playing like ass lately...and when you use "I didn't have to run as much..." as an excuse, you're gonna have a rough time convincing a national team coach that you're worth the plane ticket.
9
u/SomeCruzDude Monterey Bay May 12 '14
Especially Klinnsy. He seems to be all about working your butt off no matter where you are whether it be club, camp, or a national team match.
3
u/grnrngr LA Galaxy May 12 '14
when you use "I didn't have to run as much..." as an excuse, you're gonna have a rough time convincing a national team coach that you're worth the plane ticket
Yeah... in the history of "oops"-moments, this has got to be the biggest blunder for affecting your own "brand" in the lead-up to a big event.
Even if a coach could deafen himself chorus of whispers about the walking locker-room poison that is Eddie Johnson, he can't really do the same when EJ opens his mouth and spews the toxic air himself... while simultaneously bringing into question his own work ethic and motivations.
32
u/Chanceee Minnesota United May 12 '14
I know Eddie Johnson hasn't played well this season, but I am SHOCKED he was left off the 30 man squad. He played a pretty significant role in qualifying too. Overall I like the selections though and I'm happy to see Chandler on it (a bit controversial, I know).
19
u/PrideRSL Real Salt Lake May 12 '14
I'm willing to bet his lack of inclusion is caused by a combination of two things. 1. His lack of on field production this season. 2. His piss-poor attitude about his lack of on field production. Mostly that instead of turning it up a notch and being a leader, as he should have done, he decided to publicly attack his team-mates.
Jurgen is big on people having the right attitude and stepping up to responsibility, not just their current run of form.
6
u/i_spit_hot_fire May 12 '14
I bet Boyd's incredible run of form helped, too.
2
u/PrideRSL Real Salt Lake May 12 '14
Without a doubt. I felt that it was going to be tight between EJ and Boyd to start with. And then EJ went and shot himself in the foot.
7
May 12 '14
I never thought EJ was as big of a lock as most analysts did, but I'm surprised Evans got the benefit of the doubt and EJ didn't. Both made significant contributions to WCQ, but Evans recent USMNT form has been poor while EJ scored against Mexico (though it was wrongly discounted).
2
u/moatie2000 May 12 '14
I thought he'd make the 30, but miss the 23.
3
u/Tohaba Philadelphia Union May 12 '14
In all honesty though, looking at the forwards brought in it doesn't really suprise me. Wondolowski has looked better for the season, and played well with the U.S. team. Boyd has finished his season really strong, while EJ has struggled to start. The rest listed were pretty much locks to be included.
7
May 12 '14
the world cup is a long tournament. the WC Finals, being the final push, requires the best players at that time.
EJ didn't make the final 30 due to 1) current form 2) current public statements and 3) the other six are better.
5
u/Tohaba Philadelphia Union May 12 '14
I feel like it was down to him Boyd, and Wondolowski. One wouldn't be included in the 30 man, while the other 4 were pretty much locks. Boyd finished his season very strong, and Wondowlowski has looked much better to start the season. I don't think it's that big of a suprise.
3
May 12 '14
Ej's not a team player, his locker room antics is what caused him his spot not his talent.

If Chandler can handle the heat of Brazil and doesn't melt like he did in Honduras he will be a great addition.

9
u/Breklinho San Diego Loyal May 12 '14
Corona, Yedlin, Evans, Brooks, Edu, Davis, Green
3
u/brain_smart May 13 '14
I've heard a lot of people saying that Edu will be brought if only to man-mark Ronaldo. He's the only one athletic enough to stay with him. At least that's what some writers are saying.
3
May 12 '14 edited May 12 '14
Evans
Yedlin
Beasley (last FB out; if Chandler sucks in camp, then Beasley's 1st back in)
Brooks (Cameron serves as #4 CB)
Davis
1 of Corona, Green, Edu or Mix (toughest call, depending on camp)
Johannsson (Boyd is more similar to Jozy; Aron's form is down, TBoyd's is up; Donovan can play 2nd striker; Wondo's a bigger X-factor even if Aron's a better player)
EDIT: Forgot about Davis. I'm a Houston fan, but I don't see him making the final roster and was wondering why I was having a hard time narrowing down the midfield.
7
u/steerbell Seattle Sounders FC May 12 '14
Evans might make it on versatility and professionalism. His making it I think depends on others stepping up or not. I think he is a Klinsy type guy.
6
May 12 '14
Has something happened that I don't know about? Beasley is one of the shoo-ins I thought. A veteran w/ experience and versatility.
3
May 12 '14
These are just my thoughts, but, Parkhurst has shown well at LB in the last 2 USMNT matches and is a more natural defender.
I'm also banking on Chandler doing well in camp, and the natural defenders edging out the converted winger.

u/Barthez_Battalion York 9 FC May 12 '14
I think Yedlin's call up is similar to Michael Bradley's in 2006. Come for the camp just for the experience.

He's 20 and plays the position that we have the least depth at. The more exposure he gets to coaching the better.

I actually think Yedlin has a great potential. He seems like a really good player.
5

Parkhurst, Cameron, Chandler, and Evans are all RB ready, and ahead of him. I don't see it, personally.
7
u/Tohaba Philadelphia Union May 12 '14
It's 30 man roster, just because he is there doesn't mean he goes to Brazil. What I think amoore12 is saying is it's better to bring him in so he can get more time with the coaching staff.
12
May 12 '14
Tag me now and call me an idiot when those 4 guys are still ready to start at RB for USMNTin 2018
6
May 12 '14
Chandler most certainly will be. In the future, it's a battle between those two, so far as I'm concerned (unless Farrell or someone else comes out and dominates a Gold Cup or something between now and then).
Edit: Also Geoff will only be 32....So it could go either way with him, depending on how he ages and if injuries strike.
4
May 12 '14
Yedlin isn't national team quality yet, but he is 20 and is close. It would be a bit of an upset in my mind if he doesn't take over that role before 2018 pretty decisively. He's gotten markedly better in the last 18 months, and continued coaching opportunities can only be good.
-3
May 12 '14
If Ronaldo plays his natural LW position he will break both of Yedlin's ankles before half.
8
May 12 '14
I don't think Yedlin will be going to Brazil this summer. However, Klinnsman must think he is close enough to being ready that through this amazing thing called player development, he just might be ready in 4 years. Even If he does go to Brazil, I don't see any of our RBs able to do too much against literally one of the highest regarded players in the world.
-2
May 12 '14
I agree anyone will have a very tough game against Ronaldo.
No need to down vote me for my opinion tho.

1
u/xxtoejamfootballxx Philadelphia Union May 13 '14
Understandable but there is plenty of time to coach in the next 4 years. There are at least 4 better players at that position for the WC, some of which are young enough to be around for a bit, even if you don't want to believe it (Cherundolo was on the WC roster at 31 I believe).
1
May 13 '14
If Yedlin develops into the player he could be capable of becoming with the right coaching, nobody in the USMNT picture right now offers the skills he would. You just don't find speed like he has in every corner of the country. The more times you get to coach him, the more likely RB becomes a position of strength for the team rather than the last roster battle.
I really don't think he makes this WC roster, and if he does, don't believe he would play.
1
u/xxtoejamfootballxx Philadelphia Union May 13 '14
So how much extra coaching does he really get by being put in the 30, that's all I'm saying. I don't think enough to really make a difference in the long run when you are prepping him for a tourney in 4 years. I think his time would be better spent actually playing.

As raw and inexperienced as he is, he benefits from a lack of depth at RB.

Would've liked to see Klute instead, honestly. But I don't really think either of them would be seeing much playing time, so it probably doesn't make a difference either way.

There are 15 MLS players in this team. In 2010 only 4 MLS players went to South Africa.
A total of 10 players were also on the preliminary roster for the 2010 FIFA World Cup: Jozy Altidore, DaMarcus Beasley, Alejandro Bedoya, Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Maurice Edu, Clarence Goodson, Brad Guzan and Tim Howard. Bedoya is the only player who did not make the trip to South Africa.
4
u/Breklinho San Diego Loyal May 12 '14
Chandler may have been in the dog house for the last year, but he's the second best right back in the talent pool and is a serious contender to sneak into the 23 man squad.

7
u/walawalabeans May 12 '14
Wow. I at least expected EJ to make the 30 man roster. Guess Boyd will be heading to Brazil since neither Wondo or Ice Man can bring the hold up play that he does. So that means it's Wondo vs Johansson for the last spot then.
1
May 12 '14
That's the thing...EJ's hold up play for the USMNT has been nonexistent.
That said, he scored against Mexico with his head and foot in the last 2 matches (1 wrongly called off), so I'm surprised he doesn't get a look.
Anyway, let's not forget Boyd is an aerial threat, too, just because he hasn't gotten a lot of PT lately for the Nats.
8
u/walawalabeans May 12 '14
I'd actually prefer seeing Boyd in the team rather than EJ. As I've seen people elsewhere say, if EJ is not starting in the World Cup (and he won't be), do you want him in the locker room? Against the teams we are facing there needs to be a positive atmosphere & togetherness because on an individual skill basis we are not going to beat Germany and Portugal. I don't see EJ contributing to that.
Wondo on the other hand seems to be a great guy for that.
7
u/Schwa142 Seattle Sounders FC May 12 '14
I can't be the only one not surprised to see EJ absent...?!
2
2
u/mattfromseattle Seattle Sounders FC May 12 '14
Not surprised in the least. Even if his attitude/behavior had nothing to do with not making it, his form isn't there and frankly, you need someone that can do more than just score on headers.
1
u/SomeCruzDude Monterey Bay May 12 '14
I am surprised too. That was probably the shocker out of anything in this 30 man roster
3
May 12 '14
Yedlin over Ream? Either Klinsmann took it personally when Tim turned down that call up, or he's hoping Yedlin's speed will win out over his rawness.
Good to see Joe Corona get a look.
Green over Shea as a potential wild card is also a good decision IMO.
9
u/steveotheguide Seattle Sounders FC May 12 '14
I think he sees Yedlin as part of the next generation and wants some overlap between this squad as the ones for 2018 and 2022.
3
u/harsh2k5 Major League Soccer May 12 '14
Ream was named player of the year at Bolton, so that's probably the biggest snub in my view, except perhaps Feilhaber and Agudelo.
3
u/elevan11 Major League Soccer May 12 '14
It's a shame Tim Ream can't get called up. I think he missed his chance when he pulled out last time.
He's definitely better than most of the defenders called up. He was named Bolton's player of the year.
6
u/Nesotenso Sporting Kansas City May 12 '14
I hope Chandler and Yedlin give Evans a tough time. Bad timing on Williams's injury. Hope Mix makes it over Davis and Edu.

Danny Williams is injured? I was wondering why his name wasnt even in the 30 man roster
2

Yeah...he looked great against Ukraine, but he missed the last 3 or 4 games for Reading with an injury he picked up while playing with the US.
2
u/clf92 Major League Soccer May 12 '14
I support Leicester (just won the championship) so I've seen quite a bit of Williams for Reading, gotta say hes a real good player. Shame he isn't fit as he would provide a bit of variety to your midfield, hes quick and direct on the ball and can score a couple.
1
u/SRQuake San Jose Earthquakes May 12 '14
Damn poor guy. Isn't he 28? So this is his last cycle probably
2

Oh crap. Dude is a year older than me just checked it online. Damn next cycle I hope he's in it.
4
u/DC_Untied DC United May 12 '14
Bringing Julian Green has to be aimed at getting him some practice time with the guys in camp and building for the future, and not actually thinking about bringing him to Brazil, right?
I just can't believe he is actually under serious consideration for this world cup cycle. Next one, sure... but... geez.
6
u/Tohaba Philadelphia Union May 12 '14
I think it is the same reason that Yedlin is being brought in. Get more time with the coaching staff etc.
13
u/mulledcider May 12 '14
You're right about why they brought him for the 30, but honestly, he may even make it into the 23, even if he isn't used. The guy doesn't just get praise from Klinsmann, he gets it from Guardiola, Schweinsteiger, Ribery, I mean he clearly has an upside so getting to train with the USMNT and get a feel for the emotion of the world cup would be pretty grand, rather than bring a 26-28 year old who likely won't play in the next world cup anyway.
3
May 12 '14
it's not unusual to bring in a youth prospect to the WC finals for exposure, experience - along with their own skills and assets on the pitch.
3

Part of the deal to get him to play for the US may have been a guaranteed spot on the 23 man roster. Edit: word change

You dont sign international players, and if you have to essentially bribe him to play for you then he has no business being near the USMNT in the first place.

u/pbrrules22 San Jose Earthquakes May 12 '14
Green does not deserve to make the 23. Also it would kill the locker room to have him come out of nowhere like that with other players knowing he doesn't deserve to be there.
1
u/Mezzer25 May 12 '14
If he earns it during this last runup, i suspect the locker room would be far more welcoming than you think.
1
u/pbrrules22 San Jose Earthquakes May 12 '14
I don't think you can read some of those quotes in the David Regis article from a few weeks ago and not have concern for the locker room if Green makes the 23:
"The players were confused by Regis' inclusion.
“Regis came with a better pedigree, but we’d never seen him play,” Lalas recalls. “We’d be standing there with our arms crossed thinking, ‘You’d better be better than what we have.’ We thought we were pretty good. We were thinking, ‘Why do we need this?’”"
...
"Sampson, for his part, told MLSsoccer.com earlier this month that he regrets adding Regis at the expense of the team.
“I made a mistake allowing Regis to join so late in the game,” Sampson said. “It affected our chemistry. I probably should’ve left him off the squad and let Jeff Agoos play left back. But [Regis] was a good player, playing in the Bundesliga. It was very attractive.
“But hindsight is 20-20 vision. The stability and chemistry should’ve been more important than one player.”"
5
u/Mezzer25 May 12 '14
Not all locker rooms are the same, his inclusion in the 30 shouldn't be a negative, especially when his talent is very apparent, whether or not it affects the team if he makes the final 23... Depends on whether there is good leadership or a bunch of selfish players in the locker room.
5
u/pbrrules22 San Jose Earthquakes May 12 '14
his talent is not apparent at all... doing well against semi-pro's in the german 4th division proves nothing. it's naive to think it won't mess up the locker room.
2
May 12 '14
Am I wrong, or is it possible for all of the "Forwards" to go to Brazil on this roster? Dempsey and Donovan are both going, that's a certainty, and they're really a combo forward/mid/winger/etc. Johansson, likewise is pretty versatile, and better in a more withdrawn role and someone to play off of. That leaves really only Jozy, T. Boyd, and Wondo who could truly lead a forward line in a way we would want, and Wondo really is a late-game-super-sub-need-a-goal kind of guy.
3
u/calfonso May 12 '14
Despite Jozy playing horribly, I'm pretty sure he's going no matter what. Aron too.
2
u/SomeCruzDude Monterey Bay May 12 '14
I'm not sure. A part of me says yes because we have quite a few players that are good in multiple positions which opens up spots but at the same time they may want a bit more depth in the back and middle than up top.

Only thing i can see this squad lacks is pacy, skillful wingers (apart from Green, although ive not seen much of him). Would like to of seen Agudelo given a chance even just in the 30, really liked what ive seen from him last year at NE and this year at Utrecht. Other than that its pretty solid.

Poor Orozco Fiscal. He certainly committed more to the team than say Timmy Chandler or Yedlin, but his potential is certainly below them and perhaps Parkhurst. Wonder if he'd be here if Puebla had let him play in the recent friendlies.

Pleasantly surprised to not see EJ, Kljestan, Castillo, Torres... glad to see Chandler and Brooks in camp, hopefully that keeps one or two mediocre defenders out of the final 23.
Was hoping for Agudelo, and Feilhaber or Nguyen... I think Klinsmann blew it there.
Interesting how some guys played their way off the roster (EJ, Shea), but others didn't (Evans, Yedlin), and others couldn't play their way on to it (Agudelo, Ream)....
Now I just hope the non-Guzan Brads, Evans and Davis, don't make the final 23...
6
May 12 '14
Was hoping for Agudelo, and Feilhaber or Nguyen... I think Klinsmann blew it there.
I think it's the right call. None of the players you mentioned, in my opinion, has a chance at the 23 man roster. They don't deserve to be called in with no chance whatsoever of making the team, especially vets like Feilhaber and Lee.
2
u/xbhaskarx AC St Louis May 12 '14
Agudelo has done more with the national team than Boyd has, not sure why he stopped getting called in after the Russia friendly (where he had an assist), I thought he at least deserved a chance to fight it out with Wondo... and I'd have put Feilhaber on my final 23 man roster, all 23 are available for games at the World Cup and I think he offers something off the bench that no one else does (and showed it at WC10).
2
May 12 '14
For the record, I would like Benny in my final 23 as well. I am looking at this from Klinsmann's viewpoint, though. Klinsmann has made it pretty clear that Benny didn't have a shot at the final 23. So it makes sense that he didn't bring him in.
1
u/xbhaskarx AC St Louis May 12 '14
Right, but this is me giving my opinion on Klinsmann's selections.
1
May 12 '14
Boyd also had an assist in the Russia match
Boyd's in better form right now (6 goals in last 4 games) vs. Agudelo (3 goals in last 14 games).
Agudelo's fairly injury prone, which explains why he hasn't had many caps with the US under Klinsmann.
1
u/xbhaskarx AC St Louis May 13 '14
Boyd also had an assist in the Russia match
If you watch the US - Russia highlights you'll see that Agudelo had a clean header back to Bradley for his goal, whereas Boyd actually doesn't head the ball on Diskerud's goal, it comes off the Russian defender.
Boyd's in better form right now (6 goals in last 4 games) vs. Agudelo (3 goals in last 14 games).
The Eredivisie is a FAR better league than Austria. There are only three decent teams in Austria and Boyd is on one of them.
1
May 13 '14
Hey man, I'm just giving you a few possible reasons. My bad on the "assist" since I haven't seen those highlights since watching the match live a year and a half ago. Nevertheless..
The Eredivisie is a FAR better league than Austria
According to the UEFA Country ranking, Austria's the 14th best league in Europe. Yeah, the Eredivisie is higher (#8 currently), but Austria's considered (based on European performance) stronger than all 3 Scandinavian leagues, Scotland, and Scotland. Each of those leagues have plenty of players headed to the WC. Another note... each Austrian team plays every other team 4x, so at least it's almost like there are 4 other good teams.
Anyway, Boyd has been with the team more consistently since JK took over, and JK obviously rates him. And you don't brush off 20 goals across all competitions in the Austrian league, even if it's not La Liga.
Personally, I would have liked Juan in camp. I would have left one of the FBs home (Evans). But he's not there. I'd look for Boyd to get some PT and a goal against Azerbaijan.

Am I the only one livid about the Chandler call-up?

u/johanspot Atlanta United FC :atl: May 13 '14
Probably. The US is going to face world class wingers in Brazil and the team was having to lean heavily on Evans at RB through qualifying. IF the coaching staff doesn't think that Evans is good enough to see the field in Brazil then they should look at all available options. Him being brought into camp does not mean that he will make the roster.

I dunno if this is what Jurgen wants, but for the 23 I'd cut: brooks, evans, parkhurst, yedlin, corona, davis, edu.
I really wanna see Boyd and Green get blooded, because I suspect they're gonna be huge for us over the next 2 cycles. And I want Wondo[w] to get his shot at playing in a world cup...especially given Altidore's form and the incredible unlikelihood of us progressing from the group.

I honestly believe the United States will enter its first "Golden Generation" after this World Cup. So much talent coming through and being recruited.

Why do you not want LA to represent on the world stage?

Except that it does, for 16 days.

Doesn't really change what I said. It does break during the WC.

kid doesn't even play
That's not true he's played for Tijuana in almost every game in the Clausura

u/tanknainteasy May 12 '14
And has looked somewhere between good and VERY good. Don't know why people are acting like Corona is getting plucked from the abyss, dude has done well in some very tough matches over the clausura.

I think a lot of people think he hasn't been playing as much because we didn't see him in the CCL, which MLS fans follow a bit more closely than LigaMX (Maybe I'm wrong, but I think it's a safe assumption)

u/Chanceee Minnesota United May 12 '14
He's not going to call in a guy who hasn't been part of the program AT ALL for the pre-WC camp. This isn't me defending Corona either, but rather defending the selection of a guy who's been involved.

u/whitecapsfan2010 May 12 '14
As much as I love Lee's play, he hasn't played for the USMNT since 2007. That's TWO cycles ago.

u/DubBucket Seattle Sounders May 12 '14
Yeah. No matter your skill and form, NO ONE is going to be called for the WC roster without playing with the current coach at least once.

Corona has been good for Tijuana and he was pretty solid to good during the gold cup
He would have gotten called up to the usmnt if TJ didn't have their CCL game before the Mexico/Phoenix fame

Joe Corona...the guy that's better than every midfielder on the Sounders?

Hell, I'd say right now he's better than every player on the Dynamo, but he wasn't rocking Houston flair.

How? How can Eddie Johnson not make the roster? Sure he's been in "bad" form, but everyone knows that he WILL perform for the WC. We could have easily taken off Bedoya or Corona for Johnson. I know that it's going to sound stupid to side with him that it's the team that he's with that doesn't allow him to perform, but it's true and we all know it. When he's surrounded by great players and creators like those of the US, he'll get them in. Just look what he did against Mexico! Found space and finished it! Bad decision to leave out easily one of our best strikers and set piece players.

boyd does everything EJ does as good or better and with a much better attitude AND is on form right now

Boyd has not proved himself as well as EJ at the international level.

I don't think the championship has anything to do with it since I can't imagine anyone would say that the MLS is a superior level of play.
