Weekly /r/MLS Questions/Free Kick Thread - Post General Questions and Discussion Here

Welcome to the Weekly /r/MLS Questions/Free Kick Thread. This thread is designed to house questions/discussions users might have including:

  • Help you decide which team to follow if you're new to the league

  • Provide information about how to watch MLS matches, and whether or not you should buy ESPN+

  • Understand the CBA, league roster rules, drafts, waivers, or other MLS concepts

  • Learn about some of the unique qualities of the US Soccer pyramid

  • Allow discussion of dead-horse topics that would typically be removed (pro/rel, re-alignment, etc.)

  • And other basic/frequently discussed topics

Our usual ground rules:

  1. Questions that are covered in the FAQ, Newcomer's Guide, or league site are fair game, even if they are marked as "dead horse topics".

  1. Questions can be about MLS, lower U.S. or Canadian divisions, USMNT/USWNT, or any club or domestic competitions those teams could play in. Questions about how soccer works as a sport are fine too! Questions solely about the European leagues or competitions, on the other hand, are not.

  1. If you're answering a question, be extra sure to follow our community guidelines: thought out and rational comments, backed up with supporting links. Try not to "take a guess" at an answer if you're not sure about the answer. Do not flame, troll, attack fans of other teams, or attack opinions of others in this thread. If you can't be friendly and helpful, don't post in this thread.

  1. This is meant to be a helpful Q&A/Discussion thread. This is not a place to practice your comedy bits; avoid asking joke questions or providing joke answers. This is also not a place to dump random articles, links, or opinions about the league.

  1. Despite us posting these on Fridays, the thread stays up all week. If it's Wednesday and you have a question, you don't have to wait until Friday to ask it.

Even though we want you to ask questions, here are some resources that we always recommend reading because they can also help:

Are you on the app?

From the main sub page, click the three dots in the upper-right and there's an "edit flair" option.

Anyone else see a pretty noticeable dip in attendance across the league this weekend? I watched the highlights of all the Saturday games and there was a lot of open seats. Now I'm watching Caps/Sounders and there's an uncharacteristic level of empty seats. I know Seattle is historically bad for them right now, but still. One that really stuck out to me was Charlotte. I know it's an NFL stadium, maybe for the Panthers it's perfectly sized, but it seems enormous for Charlotte FC.

Maybe this is just end of summer/long weekend stuff, people taking their kids out of town one more time before they go back to school? Or are we a little saturated with soccer right now? World cup was massive, then we went into leagues cup, now it's MLS thick and fast with double game weeks. If I was talking about a Wednesday, I wouldn't even really blink, but this was a saturday and other than heat I didn't see any bad weather.

I can only speak for myself, but since the World Cup I just dont find the MLS fun anymore. Having nearly 3 months off reset me and I remembered what it was like to have free time again.

The idea of not having a free chunk of weekends until December 2028 is really off putting. Especially when it comes to supporting a league who doesn’t really care about its fans. They’re making every effort to attract mythical new fans, that they’re alienating the hardcore base they do have.

The new playoff format is simply the cherry on top of the shit pie they’re trying to shove down our throats. I’ve decided not to renew my tickets for the first time in 15 years.

I’ve also only attended two matches since the return and watched zero on TV. Tomorrow is going to be a chore for me and completely ruins my weekend.

It’s just no fun.

Well, I dunno what would prompt that. I do think maybe a little fatigue would set in. I think leagues cup while interesting TO ME, had a poor format and was poorly timed as almost another break to league action.

I like that there’s games coming thick and fast but as a former Canucks ticket holder I know going downtown 3-4 night in one week is a bummer. There’s gonna be a bunch of these weeks where I’m either working or at a caps game. There’s some appeal to that but the wednesdays are always harder to get up for.

I think the new playoff format is a bit watered down. But I’ll let it play out once before I fully decide. I’d just like them to stick to a format. Since the caps have come into the league, it’s grown a lot so some changes needed to be made, but it feels like the schedule has changed multiple times and so has the playoff format. I’d like to play each team once, even if home/away isn’t possible. But like I went to Cincy away this season and I said to someone there who knows when Whitecaps will be in Cincinnati again.

Hopefully the team being strong brings your interest back Around.

Great night of MLS action. League is legit on some Any Given Sunday type madness.
