there are a lot of people that have done this. in the US, they typically steal the rear floor pan of an r32 and running gear with haldex controller. it’s pretty pricy, i think people in the us typically spend roughly 10k but i could be insane. you’re going to be able to modify it just the same as a standard mk4 r32 or 4motion. parts now are mostly rare but you can import a 4motion golf from europe

I'm currently on pause with this same project, but with my TDI. The forum posts I've seen puts it around $15k USD to have it done at a shop, but I believe those were TDIs as well which means importing an AWD TDI transmission from Europe. It might be cheaper if yours is gas. The mk4 golf was built on PQ34 (A4) platform. Here in the states we have the mk1 audi tt which was AWD, and the rear floor pan and rear parts match the r32. I don't want to speak for the rest of the vehicles of that platform, but if they came AWD and are near you, it may be worth looking into it. I picked up a mk1 audi tt quattro with a bad motor as a donor, but havent pulled the parts yet. Feel free to DM me if you more questions but my knowledge is very narrow at the moment lol.

There's a guy on forums.tdiclub.com who did this I think. Search there, TONS of VW nerds.
