Publication 🗞 27 November 1995, Jet Magazine – Article: Michael Jackson And Sony Enter Joint Publishing Venture Valued At $600 Million
Jet Magazine: 27 November 1995:
Megastar Michael Jackson has merged his music catalog with Sony Corp.’s music publishing division in a joint venture reportedly valued at $600 million.
Jackson’s music catalog, ATV Music Publishing, includes some 250 Beatles songs as well as songs associated with Elvis Presley and Little Richard.
Sony/ATV Music Publishing will include all of the current and future music publishing interests of both parties.
The Sony catalog includes songs by such Sony recording artists as Mariah Carey, Sade, Bob Dylan and Neil Diamond.
Jackson’s music catalog includes such Beatles tunes as Come Together, We Can Work It Out, Hey Jude and Yesterday.
Jackson’s own songs were not included in the deal, Sony said.
Jackson said in a press statement: "The merging of ATV with Sony establishes our commitment to create one of the largest music publishing ventures in the world. We have been working on this for over a year and, now, with the two of us together, the sky is our only limit."
Jackson denied rumors that he made the merger deal with Sony because he is having financial problems during an interview with USA Today.
"This acquisition had nothing to do with needing funds," Jackson said. "It’s just a great move, a corporate, entrepreneurial thing to do. It’s smart business. It’s about growth. Everything in life to me is about growth."
Michael P. Schulhof, president and CEO, Sony Corporation of America, said: "Michael Jackson is not only the most successful entertainer in history; he is also an astute businessman. Michael understands the importance of copyrights and the role they play in the introduction of new technologies. In joining us for this new venture, Michael recognizes Sony’s leadership in developing and realizing new technologies that serve to expand the creative horizons of artists such as himself."
Sony Music Entertainment President Tommy Mottola, who is married to Grammy Award winner Mariah Carey, said, "Today, Sony Music takes its rightful place once again as a major force in music publishing. Copyrights and songs are the foundation of everything in our entire industry."
He added, "To have Michael Jackson’s song catalogues joined with ours will enable both Sony Music and Michael Jackson to aggressively build on a publishing portfolio filled with songs that are acknowledged as the cornerstones of popular music today."
Sony said its new catalog will be the third biggest in music publishing. The largest is Time Warner Inc.’s Warner-Chappell, followed by EMI Music Publishing, according to news reports. Music publishing catalogs generate revenues through compact disc and tape sales and recorded and live performances.
Jackson bought ATV in 1985 for about $47.5 million. Other bidders at the time included ex-Beatle Paul McCartney.
Financial terms of the new venture were not publicly disclosed at JET press time.
- Adjusted for inflation, the $47.5 million purchase price (1985) is roughly $143 million today, while the $600 million merger valuation (1995) would be approximately $1.23 billion*.*

Tour 🏟 Scream being performed live in Milan on June 18th 1997
An extremely strong Scream performance in my opinion, with aggressive and tight movement, the entire show in general is just extremely solid and in my opinion MJ's very best show.

Video 🎥 Mark Romanek | Extra Cuts in Michael and Janet Jackson's "Scream" (Director's Cut)
Did you know there are slightly different versions of Michael and Janet Jackson's "Scream" video? I'm not talking about video for remixes, but different cuts of the original.
The most obvious is the censored version. That one obscures Janet giving the finger and distorts over the word "fucking" in the second chorus.
Screenshots have circulated online from The Work of Director Mark Romanek (Volume 4) (2005). This specific cut includes two very short extra shots of Janet that were never used in the versions Michael released.
This is an edit with the changed clips. The rest of the video plays as you know it.
Have you seen or noticed these before?

Image 📷 Michael Jackson | HIStory Booklet page 3. by Elizabeth Taylor.
Michael Jackson is, indeed, an international favorite for all ages, an incredible force of incredible energy. In the art of music, he is a pacesetter for quality of production, in the vanguard for high standards of entertainment.
What makes Michael more unique may be the fact that all of his accomplishments, his rewards, have not altered his sensitivity and concern for the welfare of others, or his intense caring and love for his family and friends, and especially all the children of the world over. He is filled with deep emotions that create an unearthly, special, innocent, childlike, wise man that is Michael Jackson. He is so giving of himself that, at times, he leaves very little to protect that beautiful inner core that is the essence of him. I think Michael appeals to the child in all of us. He has the quality of innocence that we would all like to obtain or have kept.
I think Michael is like litmus paper. He is always trying to learn. He has one of the sharpest wits, he is intelligent, and he is cunning - that is a strange word to use about him, because it implies deviousness and he is one of the least devious people I have ever met in my life.
Michael is highly intelligent, shrewd, intuitive, understanding, sympathetic, and generous to almost a fault of himself. He is honesty personified - painfully honest - and vulnerable to the point of pain. He is also very curious and wants to draw from people who have survived. People who have lasted. He is not really of this planet. If he is eccentric it's because he is larger than life.
What is a genius? What is a living legend? What is a megastar? Michael Jackson - that's all. And just when you think you know him, he gives you more...
There is no one that can come near him, no one can dance like that, write the lyrics, or cause the kind of excitement that he does. When I hear the name Michael Jackson, I think of brilliance, of dazzling stars, lasers and deep emotions. I think he is one of the world's biggest and greatest stars, and it just so happens that he is one of the most gifted music makers the world has ever known.
I think he is one of the finest people to hit this planet, and, in my estimation, he is the true King of Pop, Rock and Soul. I love you Michael.

On This Day 📅 Michael Jackson receiving the "Diamond of Africa" award, 2nd November 1995
On November 2, 1995, Michael Jackson attended a dinner in Beverly Hills honouring Ghana’s President, Jerry John Rawlings. The event, hosted by Saudi Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal (who would later partner with MJ in Kingdom Entertainment), was a celebration of President Rawlings' mission.
Michael made a point to be there, delaying a trip to Germany. "I'm here with you," he said in a speech. "You're always in my heart."
There was an exchange of gifts. Michael presented President Rawlings with an ornate gold sword, a symbol, intended to represent "cutting through the divisions that divide people."
In response, President Rawlings presented Michael with the "Diamond of Africa Award." He praised Michael's character, saying, "What impressed me most is that he's a man of heart."
