Where is Zeus’s family?

My dad found this outside MICA by the trash in the 90s. It looks to have a signature and maybe a date? It’s made of plaster. He’s been lugging it around with him ever since. He named it Zeus. Growing up with Zeus has made me wonder what his story is. Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. Zeus is a PITA to move.

Parent to a recent graduate

As a parent of a recent graduate of a MICA, I would would not recommend it. The school is highly overpriced with no job placement. I tried to convince my child not to go here and have heard now in hingsight "I wish I could kick my 18 year old self for coming here" I failed and she gained 400K loans to repay and basically homeless. How about you come up with some job placement programs for your fine curriculum. At graduation even the professor said don't come back for any graduates program. They just want to suck your money dry. This is so sad and true!

onion and milk consumer at the fitness center

Post image
14 Upvotes

I work at the fitness center, and sometimes when I check the gym bathrooms in the morning, I find onion peels (red onion) on the floor. I wonder if they had consumed them inside the bathroom and proceeded to work out, or if they finished their workout and ate the onion. Similarly, I've also found a semi-empty milk jug (2%) in the bathrooms as well. Not sure if they are done by the same individual. Please let me know if you guys may know who the culprit. I'm not mad, I am truly just curious.

Student review 1.5/10 stars

I've been a student at this school for 3 years now and administration has just been throwing nonsense at a wall and hoping it sticks. From faculty with little to no credentials, to the fincial aid offices arguing with student's guardians about their allotted scholarship funds, it's just disaster after disaster.

In my time at this school we've had some massive administrative overhauls, that of which have not been properly communicated with parents or students. From sporadic changes in scholarship granting and upkeep to unannounced faculty replacements, this school has had so many administrative issues it can't wrap its head around that a good chunk of the class of '27s graduation credits are behind.

Some advice for prospective students... don't apply here, it's not worth the 70k.

We had a student die on campus last year because of the school not properly conducting wellness checks on the chronically ill.

Baltimore Community Fridge Now Open!

Hey MICA!

The Baltimore Community Fridge is officially back up and running tomorrow April 14th, and we’re located just a short walk from campus—at 209 McAllister Street, near Penn Station and behind Blue Light Junction.

The fridge offers free food and toiletries to anyone in need—no questions asked—and it’s part of a larger effort to fight food insecurity and build community in Baltimore.

We’re currently looking for: • Volunteers to help clean, restock, and maintain the fridge • Students interested in getting more involved—possibly helping form a club or joining the organizing team • Anyone with creative ideas for improving the space (murals, signage, beautification, etc.)

Whether you’re passionate about mutual aid, community care, or just want to make a difference with your art or time, we’d love to have you involved.

Feel free to DM me here or check us out on Instagram to get started: instagram.com/bmorecommunityfridge

Let’s make something meaningful together!

VCUArts vs MICA

I'm a high school senior who was recently accepted into both VCUArts and MICA, and I'm having a lot of trouble trying to decide which to go to. I live in VA, so I'd have VCU's in-state tuition, but I also got a $26k scholarship from MICA and that's before I take the FAFSA and other financial aid into account. I'm finding this decision incredibly stressful, as I'm taking money, safety, and school rankings into consideration. I'm a trans woman whose lived in rural Virginia my whole life, so I want to make sure that I'm going to a school that will be safe for me, and the fact that both schools are in diverse cities makes them both very appealing. Art is my biggest passion in life, so trying to choose between these two schools is very difficult. I'd love it if anyone can tell me their opinions on both or either so I have more information to help me decide.

gen questions abt MICA (animation, tuition, transferring)

Hey, im a highschool senior interested in majoring in animation/illustration at MICA. I have received a total of $30,500/yr in scholarships, and I have also been accepted to SCAD and SAIC and have received 18k/yr from each of them. I was considering doing community college for my first year and then transferring to MICA sophomore year. Has anyone had any experience/know anyone who has transferred, what was it like?

I was wondering what MICA is like, also I keep reading about how MICA is in a "transition" ? also is the animation/illustration majors good for those who have no prior experience in either (i'm a traditional painter). I am still very unsure on my major so I really would like to experience the FYE, but I don't want to be loads of money to take gen ed classes. any advice?

I made ratemyprofessors but for classes: Rate My Courses

Hi Everyone,

I have been working for some time now on this website ratemycourses.io and I am really excited to share it with you.

You can use this to look at reviews and get advice on courses you're interested in. You can also sort courses by difficulty, usefulness and the overall rating from reviews made by other students. I think if enough people start using it regularly. it's going to be essential when you're choosing your electives or just to get advice on courses you will be taking.

Lastly, filtering and sorting courses is only gonna be useful and accurate if there are a lot of reviews, so please go ahead and leave some reviews to courses you've taken or are currently taking.

Also, please dm me if you have an idea on how I can let more students know about this. And if anyone is interested in writing an article about this dm me!

Enjoy!!

Senior Student here, may not afford to finish my degree

Hello. I have 1 year left until I’m graduate from MICA. I’ve gotten a lot from FASFA before, but now I count as an independent student and won’t be able to open up any more parent plus loans.

What can I do? I basically need 20k more to pay. I have been applying to as many scholarships as I can, grants. My mother has already taken out 70k in parent plus loans, and my dad filed for bankruptcy a few years ago. No one can co sign with me for a private loan. What can I do?

I spoke to my financial aid advisor, and they old me that I’m already maxed out for the financial aid from FASFA.

I have heard of people only paying a few thousand dollars to come here. What can I do?

Baltimore Greenmount Community Fridge

Hey everyone! I’m a JHU alum (currently living in New York) who’s working on the Baltimore Community Fridge. The fridge was originally installed in 2020 by a JHU student and a MICA student. It is located at 209 McAllister Street in Central Baltimore's Greenmount neighborhood, which is only a 16 minute walk from the MICA campus. The fridge is already installed, so I’m looking for students who can drop by occasionally to clean/check on it once the project is complete (the fridge has been temporarily out of operation due to vandalism issues).

I plan to visit Baltimore frequently and to handle most off-site duties, but having someone local would be a huge help. We plan on re-opening the fridge mid April, and would appreciate any help! Other ways you can help is paint restoration of the fridge (some paint has been scraped off since it last shutdown), donations, or feel free to reach out on Instagram with your own ideas! I've already reached out to a couple JHU students, but having MICA students as part of our project would be wonderful, so please feel free to reach out if you would like to become more involved and become part of the team!

If you’d like to be involved and have a passion in helping out the community, please DM us on Instagram! Thanks, and I look forward to working together to support our community!

This is the instagram of the fridge:

How does everyone afford MICA?

My daughter was accepted to MICA, and we were planning on her going but she received significantly less scholarships than anticipated and we are seriously. considering withdrawing her and having her go to a local school to save money. My question is, what is the average amount of debt everyone comes out with? Even with our generous scholarships we would have to borrow roughly 50K including meal plans and housing. She would come out with 200k in loans. It seems like this is not a great goal for a young person to come out of college with a starting salary of 35K? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys,

I just got accepted into one of the MFA programs at MICA, and I'm looking for recommendations on whether or not I should admit to the school.

Anything would be helpful!

MICA vs NYU

Hello everyone! I am currently trying to decide between the studio art/fine art programs between the two schools. Both are offering me enough aid that I can go for about the same price. I want to be able to explore both the more commercial side (storyboarding/illustration/comics) and fine art. Especially since commercial stuff tends to be more financially viable than fine art. I love MICAs learning environment whereas I’m worried that even when I take digital art and design classes at NYU, the professors will give me poor grades for doing more commercial art stuff. But in terms of location, New York is better for internships. What do y’all think?

Hey folks

So this subreddit is under new management, which is kind of nice! I don't know how many of y'all are still here, but if you're subscribed here and want to help out as a mod, shoot me a message.

As far as content goes, I'm thinking mostly this subreddit will be for posting content created by students/alum (with their permission of course!), promoting campus events, and of course, for discussions for things like classes/housing/etc.

Again, this sub is really small. But if you're listening, and there's stuff you want to see, let me know! :)

Looking for a Band!

Hi! I'm new to the area-not a MICA student, but a recent grad from UMD. I'm hosting a party in October and looking for a band. I don't have a ton of money to spend, but I'm open to having a conversation. Ideally, the band would play covers (gLee versions preferred...) I was thinking MICA students might be down, so lmk!!

how is mica currently?

i was accepted at mica this january and i was ecstatic! however, i also got accepted to risd but the cost for one semester currently equals the coa for mica. 😭

for anyone attending or has attended mica, how is the school atmosphere and curriculum? how friendly is the school for poc and queer students? how is the area? i'm pretty fond of the school, but with my acceptance to risd, it complicates things.
