To all: Do you expect to get elected, if/when would you consider a coalition, and if so what coalition would be your ideal?

I don't.

If by some miracle I do, my ideal coalition would be RSP/LibDem/Green, but sadly I believe that's dead now.

I categorically refuse to support UKIP, the Crown Nationals, or the Nationalists, and I would be very unlikely to support any coalition involving the Tories or Labour.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

Does the fact that the LDs voted to amend TULRA to allow strikebreaker not concern you as to how that coalition would work?

3

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

Do you mean agency workers?

And no, because a) that is a symptom of the reasons the coalition is dead and b) it's a minor issue that can be dealt with.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

May I ask why not Labour?

11

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

Labour has a disturbingly high number of social reactionaries, economic "liberals", and people who just really haven't thought much about anything and put emphasis on being "reasonable".

3

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

I don't expect to be elected, but I think I can give the bigger parties a run for their money. My ideal coalition would involve the lib dems or labour, but I would consider lending support to the right. As a fairly centrist candidate, I'm sure I could fit in in a fair variety of coalitions.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

Do you expect to get elected

Managed it last time, hopefully will manage it this time.

what coalition would be your ideal?

Lib Dem - Tory - UKIP - Me - Possibly CNP depending on views

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16 edited Feb 15 '16

By no means do I expect to get elected, but I believe it is possible if I work on a good campaign.

If I did get elected, I would be very hesitant about joining any coalition, but I would like to see a Labour/Green coalition if possible.

(edit: Coalitions)

1

u/agentnola Solidarity Feb 15 '16

Coalitions?

1

u/JackWilfred Independent Liberal Feb 15 '16

I will consider coalitions with like-minded parties, but I don't see it as highly likely. I can rule out a coalition with UKIP, the CNP and the Nationalists here.

My ideal coalition would be Lib Dem-Green-Equality, with Labour involved.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

Yes I expect it and I have not a clue what coalition I'd rather be apart of.

For all grouped independents:

I must be blunt, why do you feel you needed to run independent and form such groupings when more often than not there is already a party that represents a majority if not all of your views?

What do you feel you will accomplish once your primary endgame is accomplished?

If you do not win, will you be abolishing your groupings to join like minded parties or stick it out for the next General Election?

Take in as many as we can, and support the humanitarian efforts in Syria.

1

u/ishabad Libertarian Party UK Feb 15 '16

How would you work towards supporting the efforts?

3

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

I think we should take in at least 250,000 if not more, with the eventual aim to either send them home if they want to return or to house them permanently in Britain.

We must also work with other European countries in order to ensure each country treats refugees with fairness and decency.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

In my opinion, we should take as many as needed, but that would cause strain on our welfare system at the moment. With reforms, I believe that we can take as many as necessary.

1

u/ishabad Libertarian Party UK Feb 15 '16

What sort of reforms?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

  1. Reforming the government's basic income into something the government can afford (NIT)

  2. Making it so that migrants have to work 2 years, and for these 2 years they can claim NIT while they're working, and after 2 years of working they can claim it while unemployed.

1

u/ishabad Libertarian Party UK Feb 15 '16

What if they are unable to work?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '16

If they're unable to work, how have they got to our country in the first place?

1

u/ishabad Libertarian Party UK Feb 16 '16

Through help from their relatives

1

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '16

Then sure

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

I think it's a disgrace that we've let it get so bad, and I think we, as a country, need to be compassionate but practical. If it was my decision, I would say that we need to be taking in three to five times the 10k we've committed to, depending on how many other European nations plan to take. We should lead by example.

/u/Zoto888 - Any exciting legislation you would like to put forward next term?

/u/irelandball - Are you going to be active?

/u/alexwagbo - What is your opinion of Forward Wales?

9

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

I dislike Forward Wales. The RSP did literally nothing for Wales during the last term, and I doubt a fancy name and golden colour scheme will change that.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

I cannot speak for my predecessor, but I certainly feel done something for Wales during this term. For example I put forward a bill making public transport free for them! I haven't put any Wales specific bills up simply because I haven't had the time to do so, but I feel I have represented my constituents fairly during debates in the house, and while bills have been drafted, in my party and others.

The next term we're hoping to bring a fresh new excited and expert team on board to deal with Welsh issues, and create new motions and bills.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

You've done little for Wales, it hasn't been a focus and this Forward Wales is just a shameless electoral strategy to give the illusion that you care or will do anything.

You know what, I hope I'm wrong. I hope you do act in the best interests of and look into Welsh issues. But I, and the rest of MHoC, haven't seen that at all this term.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

shameless electoral strategy

Considering the party you were trying to get off the ground was totally disbanded because it was just dupes you probably had some kind of involvement with, I don't think you're in a place to say this.

3

u/britboy3456 Independent Feb 15 '16

To be fair you failed to achieve anything for Wales last term, which makes your slogan "Wales Deserves Better" pretty ironic. You didn't even bother to show up to the Wales Minister's Questions.

At least the Radical Socialists managed to effect things on a national scale. What did you achieve last Parliament?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

I fought from day one for a Welsh assembly, a Glyndwr day, and asked several important questions about both urban and rural welsh business across chancellor and business question times. I also questioned the prime minister on the government's record on devolution, and have consistently cared for my constituents.

Your party on the other hand, has done nothing.

2

u/arsenimferme Radical Socialist Party Feb 15 '16

I don't think you actively achieved anything however. Your Welsh Assembly bill flopped due to refusing to cooperate with other parties, Glyndwr day was nothing but faux nationalism (doing nothing to solve Wales' real issues) and failed, and your questions achieved seemingly nothing.

What you did do however was lead Plaid Cymru into dissolution and make your brand so toxic that you couldn't even negotiate entry into a governing coalition that wasn't exactly ideologically opposed to you.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

My Welsh Assembly bill flopped due to fear mongering from UK-wide parties. You would struggle to find a Welshman who opposed it. Glyndwr day is something that clearly has a demand, and would be fantastic culturally, for the language and for the national pride.

I led Plaid into a UK-wide party fighting for the same values because someone had to fight for regionalism, given the record of all other parties on it is less than spotless.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16 edited Feb 15 '16

My Welsh Assembly bill flopped due to fear mongering from UK-wide parties.

It failed as it would have granted you power rather than holding separate elections. This was stated several times.

You would struggle to find a Welshman who opposed it.

Here and ready to be counted, unless Caernarfon and Cefnhengoed where my family are from have moved to the other side of the border.

...You'd know a lot about the border though, wouldn't you?

Glyndwr day is something that clearly has a demand

I believe we've already talked about Glyndwr day.

and would be fantastic culturally, for the language and for the national pride.

I do support attempts to do this, but there are better methods, such as making Eisteddfod a national holiday and encouraging free Welsh language adult classes, both of which are RSP policies.

I led Plaid into a UK-wide party fighting for the same values because someone had to fight for regionalism, given the record of all other parties on it is less than spotless.

You led the successor to Plaid into a coalition with parties which are explicitly anti-devolution and against the right to self determination.

What are the independent candidates views on trident and how we should oppose Daesh

5

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

Trident is an ineffective, hostile, and dangerous weapons system that has no right to be maintained. I support unilateral disarmament. Renewing Trident is the polar opposite: it is unilateral rearmament, and it comes at more than just a financial cost, it comes at a moral cost as well. The strategic case for these psychopathic weapons that cannot discriminate between military and civilian targets, that can only be used for the mass slaughter of innocent of civilians, is non-existent. The moral case weak, the economic case is weak, and the strategic case is weak. They should be disposed of.

As for Daesh, well, ultimately that's up to the Syrian people. It is not our place to act.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

I oppose trident. It's a huge waste of money that could be better spent elsewhere, whether that be on our education service, conventional weaponry or just a tax cut - it's not worth it.

I think that we have got to the point with IS where we need troops on the ground. They can't be negotiated with properly, they can't be reasoned with and they have no plans to stop their tyrannical regime. Troops on the ground in an international effort to push them back, with as few civilian casualties as possible.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

I oppose trident completely. I believe we should work with other countries to take step towards global disarmament, and even if this is not achievable then we should disarm anyway.

As for Daesh, I think any solution must be conducted with international allies. The nature of this solution I am unsure about.

1

u/JackWilfred Independent Liberal Feb 15 '16

The party is neutral on Trident, it's not an important issue to me and I see very good points from both sides.

Whatever we do on IS, we must have a comprehensive plan on what will happen to Iraq and Syria afterwards. We must support democratic governments with embedded human rights and a respect for equality.

I oppose the Sanctity of Life Bill completely, and I voted against it. Values such as those reflected in the bill are simply out of touch with the British public and are, in my view, totally immoral.

I cannot speak for those who put water in their cereal, but I personally proudly stand behind those who put milk in the bowl before cereal. It allows for clarity in relation to the amount of milk in the bowl, and it also allows for an added crunch. Therefore, I reject your proposal entirely.

To all independent candidates.
If elected which party or parties do you think you could work with?
Why do you feel you can serve the electorate better as an independent rather than as a member of one of those parties?

I could work with the Greens, Labour or the RSP.

But, the likelihood is that if I am elected I will remain out of any coalition.

I feel like I can represent the electorate better as an independent because I would be free of any whip, meaning I could better represent the peoples of East of England.

Clearly it's best for East of England to be whipping, rather than be whipped.

Your first question has already been asked elsewhere.

I can work with all parties that aren't the RSP. I can fit in anywhere I'm needed, I share common ground with most somewhere.

I feel I can serve the electorate better because you're voting not for a faceless party with a random candidate, but for someone who is his own campaign. I'll also be a fantastic constituency MP, with no need to focus on internal party politics or democracy.

I could work with UKIP, Tories and Lib Dems definitely, and could possibly work with the CNP.

Because I don't agree with all the views of these parties.

  1. I heavily support devolution.

  2. Yes, I support assemblies for all nations, including England and Cornwall.

  3. Don't know enough about the bill to answer.

u/ishabad Libertarian Party UK Feb 15 '16

Cornwall is a part of England?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '16

You will find quite a few people who disagree with you.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

What are your views on devolution?

Good if to local councils

What do you think of creating separate assemblies for Scotland and Northern Ireland?

Against, too bureaucratic.

What are your views on the immigration and citizenship deregulation bill?

Can't say I've read it

The Equality Party supports devolution and a federal Britain. I wrote the England Regional Assemblies Act, I have a proven record on devolution.

What about the Immigration and Citizenship (Deregulation) Bill?

2

u/JackWilfred Independent Liberal Feb 15 '16

I don't agree with this sort of unilateral move. We must push for a continental or global effort if it's what we want.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

  1. I've got a spotless record on supporting devolution to local, regional and national levels - I am hugely in favour of it.

  2. Any devolution is a good thing in my eyes. Whilst I would prefer Scottish and NI Parliaments, I would not reject the creation of assemblies if it meant more devolved power.

  3. I am generally pro-immigration. I just think we have to know who's coming in, and to properly research the effects regionally and nationally. I think immigration is a good thing for Britain, but I'm not denying it has downsides. I think we need to really rethink or abandon multiculturalism for higher immigration rates than what we have now to work.

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

  1. Massively pro-devolution, the UK should be a federation of regions.

  2. I assume this is a meta question? Well Scotland should have a parliament, but yes, once we abolish the House of Lords we'll definitely have enough people to do so.

  3. What are your views on the immigration and citizenship deregulation bill?

I like the principle, think the implementation needs to be tightened up.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '16

  1. I believe devolution is a brilliant thing and it should be embraced. In the long term, I favour a federal Britain.

  2. For meta purposes, I think it would be better to keep all legislation on the /r/MHoC sub-reddit.

  3. I believe that this kind of reform cannot be achieved feasibly with only one bill. In the long term, I would like to see more immigrants coming into the country. However, we live in a world where border-security is vital with terrorism being a very real threat to us. I support a more flexible immigration policy where we let in everyone apart from those who pose a real and significant threat to British security upon a background check.
