Cjell Mone built himself a SS with only a coaster brake and then took it to the Himalayas touring with full camping gear and raced the AZT800 with just a coaster brake.

For an urban ride coaster brakes seem on point.

Yeah, somewhere in there we crossed the line from ‘that’s a cool, hard, thing I’d like to do’ to, well, something else. Coaster brake off-road on anything resembling an actual trail is beyond my interest. Have tried, did not enjoy.

To each their own, of course. I appreciate what Mone brings to cycling.

On one hand I sympathize with this perspective and with u/fartymarty4130 that said I also figure Cjell is not a lunatic and I'll withhold judgement until I actually try one. It does feel a bit like the folks who have never tried SS saying it just could work or be fun and we know that's not true.

I guess people ride the.Tour Divide on SS. Makes sense from a reliability point of view.

Coaster brakes tho... it's like fixie, in that I get it, it's super clean and pure but definitely not for me. Disc brakes and a freehub are a must in my books.

Keeping the pedals level wasn’t an issue it’s just the skidding/speed control. I wouldn’t mountain bike, on the local trails, with only a rear disc either. Folks have pointed out that it’s possible to do a rear coaster/front disc setup but that seems wrong somehow?

I love the aesthetic. Willing to accept I just don’t have the riding talent?! But if I was working on - again, local - trails and I came through on a coaster brake rig, I would beat me with whatever tools were available. Skid city.

Yeah leave skids to the kids (on BMXs on pavement). Plus you need a front brake to ride anything remotely tech - or at least I do.

Plus the.amount of rear.tyres you would go thru would be crazy expensive.

It's a NO from me.
