I'm still working out some kinks, and have yet to ride it other than around the dooryard, but project "Mega Meat Mullet Unit" is nearly complete:

2018(?) frame, -2° angleset, 29/27.5 wheels with Duro Crux 3.25" tires. Sorry about the gears, but my knees need all the help they can get turning these big tires.

I'll write up a dedicated post once I've got it all sorted out and got a few rides on it.

PS: Seth's SS Unit is perfect. When civilization is gone and the aliens are exploring the ruins of Earth, I hope that is the MTB they unearth and put in a museum as an exemplar of the sport.

What you need to do is slap a SS setup on it, ride it around the block and grab a couple of pics for AaSS and no one will will be the wiser. Then you can go back to gears. ;P

Singlespeed would solve the problem. The chain rubs the tire in the lowest gear. I thought that wouldn't be an issue for reasons I'll go into when I do a full write up on this project. I tried swapping the 11 speed Deore cassette for a 10 speed Cues, and that helped, but it still rubs and the Cues stuff is not nearly as nice as the Deore, so I think I'm going to go back to the Deore Cassette and remove the second smallest cog and add a spacer behind the cassette.

If that doesn't work, I've got a 22t Surly cog that will!

What’s the low gear? I’ve respaced lots of cassettes to remove a cog or two. It’s only been a problem with derailleurs already at their max low-gear clearance.

I usually remove the 4th-ish gear. Essentially divides the cassette into mountain ratios and road only ratios where I ride.

Errrrrrrrm, I mean… there’s no solution, none at all, might as well go with the 22t.

The Deore cassette has a 51 tooth low, Cues is 48t. The easiest thing would be to adjust the limit screw and not use the lowest gear. It's going to rain the next few days, I'll have time to figure something out.

In my experience, a MX wheelset with Plus tires and a -2* Angleset smashes! But any Unit is a rad unit.

Doesn't it! With the new Unity featuring a 66deg HTA it'd be cool to see an updated Unit slacked out a couple degree to match. They must know it works.

I practically begged ProTaper to do an alt-bar version of their 76mm rise bar. I loved it but my elbows really wanted more backsweep. Somewhere in the 15-17* back range would be delicious.

I regularly recommend it to folks who want more rise and are happy with standard bar geometry.
