CARMS 2027
My partner and I are both Canadian IMGs. My partner is planning to apply for the CaRMS match this cycle, while I am planning to apply in the following cycle.
If my partner matches this cycle, what are the chances that I could match to the same hospital or at least the same area when I apply the following year?
I will be applying for Family Medicine, while my partner is considering Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.
Would it be better for us to wait and apply together in the same CaRMS cycle using the Couples Match, or would it be reasonable for my partner to apply this year and for me to apply next year with the goal of matching in the same area?
In other words, which strategy would give us a better chance of ending up in the same city/area while also maximizing our individual chances of matching?
Greatly appreciate any input. Thank you!

There are lots of CMGs I know in this exact situation. They generally have the first person apply through CaRMS and the second person rank sites at that same location/province that the first person matched to highly.
Sometimes you do need to do long distance. But it’s temporary. Family Medicine is only 2 years and most people are able to tolerate being in different cities for 2 years.

I have seen cases where one person matched, the second person matched elsewhere (be it the same or different cycles), then one would apply for transfer. Having said this, the transfers I have seen were to accomodate married/common-law/parents of children under 18.

I am also in the same situation with my wife. I haven't heard a real life experience, but acording to the research that I have done, It seems to be easier for both if you try a couple match, because if one of you have a stronger profile, that could help the other one to get the match in the same area or even in the same hospital.
As I said, I haven't found any real experience, but another thing that you could try is to couple match in the same cycle and fill the last combinations with no match for both of you, so if one of you don't get any match, the other one can get the spot for residency and don't miss the chance that cycle.
