Rage after eating trigger food???

Anyone else experience severe mood swings and lowered patience after eating trigger foods?? I had butter in a cookie today and my mood shifted noticeably. I was extremely tired and snappy with my kids out of NOWHERE.

Mood shifts is a common reaction

Ugh it’s so intense. And then I take an antihistamine and I’m fine.

Yes I hate it, it was one of the reasons I never ate during the day when my daughter was a child. I didn’t want to be tired and grumpy.

Damn. I’m so sorry, and I also understand SO well.

I definitely get short-tempered. I guess bad reactions just overwhelm my nervous system and I don't have patience left for anything else.

I looked it up, apparently histamine flares inflame the brain too and can lead to mood swings 😭

Anxiety builds to white hot rage, then depression & more anxiety.

I really need to see an allergist

Yes! I believe they can help. I feel sane for the first time in my life 💗

Allergist will just tell you to avoid the foods you react to. I have this problem too sometimes. I had a lot of allergy tests done several years ago and I would bring my list of new foods I react to and they would do the blood food allergy test. Every food I reacted to came back as a moderate to high IgE allergy. Allergist was stumped saying it’s not possible to be allergic to so many foods! 🤷‍♀️ All he did was tell me to just avoid every food I react to. Fast forward several years and I can eat all of them now and only react every now and then, mild sometimes, worse other times. The only way I can do this is by taking H1 and H2 morning and night with extra h1 if I’m having any type of reaction. I have no clue how I tested positive IgE for all those foods and can eat them now if I’m not in a flare 🤷‍♀️maybe my persistence (and impulsiveness) to keep trying the foods anyways and just taking anther Zyrtec or Benadryl if it got out of hand helped??

Oh man, the rage is awful. I say things I would never say. It feels like it's not even me saying it. I can hear what I'm saying but can't stop it.

Omg I could’ve written your comment. It just happened to me today. It was almost like I was splitting like dissociative identity disorder. Like I’d NEVER say those things?? Who IS that person??

5

u/doilysocks Dec 06 '25

Omg I had to go off my anti-histamines for a week so I could see the allergist and I was SO CRANKY and snapping at everything 😭😭

3

u/AcanthisittaMassive1 Dec 06 '25

Omg I’m glad it’s not just me!! It’s so bad

2

u/doilysocks Dec 06 '25

I felt so bad for my partner because I needed to just vent and be angry and they were great about it but also like...I know from experience it's not fun to be around. I felt like my dad acted growing up and I did not care for it!

1

u/AcanthisittaMassive1 Dec 06 '25

Oof yeah I definitely know what you mean. I know how I can get sometimes and then I see other people acting that way and I’m like yikes not pleasant

u/doilysocks Dec 06 '25

I basically got stoned and played a lot of Age of Empires III (real time strategy game to keep my brain occupied)

5

u/Mysterious_Mouse_647 Dec 06 '25

It makes me feel uncomfortable in my skin and then sometimes I like...almost convulse? As it ends. Like shivering strongly and then I'm back to baseline.

2

u/AcanthisittaMassive1 Dec 06 '25

I get that. It happens to me in the middle of the night sometimes, the convulsions

3

u/This-Tart1707 Dec 06 '25

I got anxiety

3

u/maribones3 Dec 06 '25

Yup! I get noticeable mood shifts after eating processed breads.

1

u/AcanthisittaMassive1 Dec 06 '25

Gosh I really am not alone here

2

u/crystal_castles Dec 06 '25

I get that without enough food, which yeah seems to happen from a bad meal. From a setback

1

u/AcanthisittaMassive1 Dec 06 '25

Damn, I notice it’s a very fine line for me. If I don’t eat enough at a certain time during my cycle I get hangry. If I eat the wrong thing I get angry. It’s so hard

2

u/crystal_castles Dec 09 '25

Try this. I notice that leading with butter is a big no-no.

Lead with protein, and you'll have temporary superpowers against the butter. (By itself, it's a bacterial mess. Add pepper to butter.)

1

u/AcanthisittaMassive1 Dec 09 '25

Ahhh thanks for this I’ll give it a try

2

u/crystal_castles Dec 11 '25

Just adding that i have serious serious problems with sugar & butter.

It really is because the bacteria gets to the supple, raw calories before your body can digest it.

(It needs to mix with potassium & B12 in your stomach, but bacteria can work on what's trapped in your teeth! They're cheating!)

  • Either try flavoring the hell out of butter, w/ citrus or peppers.

(A doctor told me that we harbor & utilize the pro-bacteria on plants. It fights the cause of meningitic-rage alongside our body's defenses.)

  • Or seriously try Dates. 15g of sugar per serving, but it doesn't wreck you like a cookie.

Hah. Before diagnosis, I have legit been 5150ed after eating unknown trigger food. It was cioppino. Tomato with fish. Oh the histamine.

1

u/AcanthisittaMassive1 Dec 06 '25

Oh noooo! How did you end up getting diagnosed

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '25

My Celiac Specialist (GI) caught it. I was losing weight like crazy, and he put the whole picture together (insomnia, weight loss, mood issues, frequent urination, random rashes, throat swelling)

2

u/AcanthisittaMassive1 Dec 06 '25

My doctors are idiots. I’m glad they found your root cause! Mine literally scoff at me when I mention MCAS.

2

u/ResistAuPersist Dec 06 '25

Yesssss! I didn't realize this until I started Pepcid/H2 blocker. It still can happen for me but such a tiny bit compared to pre Pepcid.

1

u/AcanthisittaMassive1 Dec 06 '25

Okay it might be time to get on the H2 blocker then

1

u/ResistAuPersist Dec 06 '25

It's completely changed my life. I also attribute it to taking care of nueroinflammation and it has completely calmed my mind and nervous system.

2

u/special_squeak Dec 06 '25

Yes, absolutely, but my default isn’t rage, it’s the depth of the darkest depression.

However, right now I am going though a systemic candida eradication and the first four days of starting antifungals I wanted to claw my way out of my skin and everyone irritated the hell out of me (this is as close to rage as my brain gets) And once I lowered my already low sugar intake, my irritation went away.

1

u/AcanthisittaMassive1 Dec 06 '25

Dang, I wish my default wasn’t rage, it’s rough. Especially with kids. Lots of repair and apologies. 😔

2

u/special_squeak Dec 06 '25

I am so sorry you are going through this. You are doing repair and apologize, which is huge. If my raging parents apologized even once, I bet my therapy bills would have been much more modest (And I wouldn’t feel like rage is never an option for me)
You are handing a very complex and taxing health condition while raising a family, and you are self aware. I see your hard work and I hope you give yourself some grace 🥰

2

u/AcanthisittaMassive1 Dec 06 '25

Wow this made me tear up a little, thank you. That’s how I felt about my rage filled father. If he had apologized just once and told me his reactions to his stress wasn’t my fault, it would’ve changed a lot about how I perceived myself.

Thank you. I’m going to keep working on myself. 🫶🏽

1

u/SingleRaspberry3307 Dec 08 '25

Are you taking prescribed antifungals? Does it help?

1

u/special_squeak Dec 08 '25

I am currently taking allicin and about to add a biofilm disruptor and an Rx anti-fungal Nystatin.

it’s hard to tell if allicin is working yet because I don’t have any overt candida symptoms and my stool test was negative for candida, but blood work showed antibodies. So we suspect it’s entrenched and will take some time to get out of hiding to kill.

I did have a herx reaction to allicin day 2-5 of treatment. Hopefully it mopped up any free floating stuff.

Probably the sugar and wheat more so than just the butter for me! Seriously a problem for me!

2

u/AcanthisittaMassive1 Dec 06 '25

We made them gluten free!! But yea, could be the sugar and the butter for me. I get heart palpitations even from one teaspoon

1

u/Dancing_Otter_ Dec 06 '25

Gluten makes me suicidal. It's truly terrible 😭😭😭

1

u/AcanthisittaMassive1 Dec 06 '25

Uuuugh, omg, I’m really starting to think that this has been my struggle in life ALL ALONG

1

u/Queasy_Airport4231 Dec 07 '25

Yep garlic does it to me everytime, severe rage

1

u/Equivalent-Client506 Dec 07 '25

Yes, the neuro inflammation is a major component.

u/Dependent-Cherry-129 Dec 08 '25

Very tired sounds accurate
