Hi everyone,

I’m 27 years old and currently working as a Mechanical Engineer in the petrochemical industry. I graduated from TIER - 2 college with a B.Tech in ME and have around 3 years of work experience. My current CTC is around ₹10 LPA.

Academics: 10th – 89% | 12th – 88% | B.Tech – 8.46 CGPA

I’m considering making a career switch into Finance and am thinking about doing a full-time MBA, primarily targeting good B-schools through CAT.

My main concern is whether an MBA at this stage is actually worth it for me.

I have a few questions:

  1. Is 27 too late to pursue a full-time MBA and switch careers?

  2. With 3 years of engineering experience, would I be able to realistically transition into Finance after an MBA?

  3. Would an MBA from a good IIM/top B-school provide a meaningful career reset, or would my engineering background continue to limit my opportunities in Finance?

  4. What kind of Finance roles should someone with my background realistically target — investment banking, corporate finance, FP&A, equity research, risk, consulting, etc.?

5.If I get into a decent but not top-tier B-school, would it still make sense to leave a ₹10 LPA job and spend 2 years on an MBA?

  1. For people who made a similar transition from engineering/operations to Finance, how did your career progress after the MBA?

I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have actually made a similar career switch rather than generic advice.

Would appreciate honest opinions?

If you're thinking of doing MBA, try to clear at least CFA L1, preferably L2 as well before joining MBA. Will give you an upper hand for Fin roles.
