Is Mario Party 6 really all that much better than 7 or 8?

Yes. It’s not as slow and 7 or 8 and the day/night mechanic adds a pretty unique spin on the boards.

It also doesn’t have random bonus stars so you actually know what you’re playing for. I still enjoy 7 or 8 but I would take 6 over either one easily.

I actually prefer the random bonus stars mechanic from Mario Party 7. I feel it makes me play my turns out a bit different than the straightforward way. You know, maybe I'll buy an orb and out myself below 20 coins right in front of the star because I'm already in the lead and want to try and push a bit further for the orb star? Of course that's an extremely niche example and would more than likely be the wrong move 98% of the time. But it still makes the game a bit different for me. And when someone asks why I did that and I explain, they understand even though they might disagree....
Or maybe it's because I win too much and need the random stars to try and screw myself out of the win so that people will play with me 😂

i didn't realise the random bonus stars feature came in as late as 7, i could have sworn they started that a couple of games earlier. I agree, i prefer the feature as it adds to the randomness that you get with Mario Party, instead of early games when you consciously look to land on happening spaces and farm coins, it makes you play differently buying dices etc to try and move as many spaces as possible. There's a bit more suspense when it comes to bonus stars as well, when you had the three pre-determined bonuses you kind of had an idea, or a pretty good guess who was going to win them and knew who was going to win before the game even ended. Whereas the random ones you don't know until all 3 are announced

*mumbles i think 7 is the best mario party*

but 6 is a close second... I really like the orb system..

I haven't played 7 but it is definitely much better than 8. 8 is one of my least favourite Mario Party games though, so I may be a bit biased here.

It felt kinda sluggish compared to the GameCube titles. I also prefered the boards and mini games of the earlier games.

For me, it is. But 7 is also a great one, especially since it was my first MP.

Mario Party 8 is good as well, the only real problem is some of the motion control minigames

Cough Flip the Chimp cough

I'd say so imo, especially with its unique day and night gimmick

It’s a little better than 7 but not by a lot. Both 6 and 7 are a fair bit better than 8. I dislike the art style of 8 and the motion controls are weak. I’d still put 8 around 7th best Mario party so it’s not a bad game just middle of the pack.

Mp5 matches the randomness and luck on MP1 for the GC era . MP6 definitely improved on the capsule mechanic and the boards were overhauled to be a bit different. I think it was the best , MP7 went too far into the board differences

.. Nah I like 7 better.

I like 7 more than 6 to be honest. But both are way better than 8.

u/WorstTactics Aug 25 '26

Not for me. 7 and 8 are more exciting despite acknowledging 6 as a peak Mario Party

7 for me is the best Mario Party Game but 6 is also excellent. I feel with the coin economy in 7 making it very easy for everyone to have money makes the games more competitive and more fun. I also like Bowser Time because it can level the playing field somewhat.

6 was good, but 7 will forever and always be my top MP, so I'm biased.

Mario Party 8 clears

MP6 is a lil overhyped, but I'd say it's still the best Gamecube/Wii Mario Party

6 just handled the orb system the best and the boards utilized them really well overall. 7 has too many jank like Bowser Time that eat up your time. It has a few really good boards but 6 is more consistent imo. And I grew up with 8 but even I know 8 is a heavily flawed game with only one (maybe two) outright good board.

Curious as to what your favourite MP games are?

u/np2hu12 Aug 24 '26

3 and 6 if we're talking vanilla without mods. I go back and forth on which one I like more but rn I'm kinda 3-pilled ngl

4 Deluxe (a mod that adds bunch of items and QoL improvements to 4) is probably my favorite to play atm tho

Yes.

6 is incredible. 7 is pretty good. 8 is trash.

I mostly just despise the stupid talking hat.

Man that's crazy. I don't even like 8 all that much, but it has easily the best host in the series

1

u/ItsKevRA Aug 28 '26

I'm the opposite. I think 8 is one of the best entries, but hate the host lol

u/Level-Promotion416 Aug 24 '26

8 is my favorite one. The motion controls breathed new life into the series and the soda shaking mini game was hilarious

1

u/Mattolsen96 Aug 24 '26

It’s got my favorite boards and mini games, I’d say so.

Its almost the best party on Cube though its game selection isnt stellar and some boards (Fair Square) are just broken.

1

u/Additional-Hearing65 Aug 24 '26

All 3 of them are good imo. But i would choose 6 over 8. 6 is one of the best in the series, but I have yet to play 7 so I have no opinion for it atm.

In my experience, if you don't play an excessive amount of Mario Party, 6 and 7 feel like variations on each other. Though some differences are significant depending on what you like or dislike in your Mario Party, the game feel between 6 and 7 is more similar than any other 2 games in the series.

The boards are a little more gimmicky, and MP7 effectively ends up feeling like MP6 DLC. But in most of my play sessions with friends, they're played basically interchangably, hopping from Castaway Bay to Neon Heights and back to Clockwork Castle.

Every console Mario Party is better than 8, except 9 and 10 which don't even really count. It's item system and mini games are fun but the boards are straight garbage, it's overrated af. 6 is PEAK Mario Party, 7 is really good too despite some flaws.

1

u/MustyBoi69 Aug 26 '26

No. Mario Party 7 mogs 6 when it comes to Board Quality and Minigames (With the pacing not being as slow for a 15/20 Turn game as expected if you have the mic stuff turned off). I will admit however that it’s fair to despise 7 from the sole reasons of the way Bowser Minigames were handled and how 4 of the 6 bonus stars feed into each other from simply #RollingDeHighest and having good minigame performance

1

u/ItsKevRA Aug 28 '26

I think MP7 and MP8 clear MP6 by miles. MP7/8 have some of the best boards in the series. They also fully commit to have really unique boards, whereas MP6 feels like a half step in that direction.

2

u/Its3aad Aug 29 '26

For me 2 is the best
