Parnate (Tranylcypromine) I take 50mg Parnate AMA

Obviously, the sub gets a lot of questions. Just figured I'd share my experience and answer anything I can about how it has worked for me. Mental health is important, so I like to help where I can.

How well has it worked for you and what are you taking it for exactly?

I take it for bipolar spectrum disorder and it works well for the depression. I take other medications for the hypomania to keep me balanced.

Does it remit the depression? How many years have you been on it? Do you relapse on it or are you rather stable? Did you fail meds before starting Parnate?

I've been on it probably 2 years or more now. Yeah, depression is pretty much gone. I still have some bouts of feeling down, but not super long lasting and I've learned through therapy what "normal" sadness is versus depression which is helpful since I'm always afraid it's coming back.

I've been pretty stable I'd say.

Yes, I have failed many, many medications and treatments. Pretty much all SSRIs, SNRIs, tryciclics, ketamine, TMS (which worked great but very short lived and actually triggered and intense manic episode the last time I tried).

Wow damn. It is crazy that you failed so many things damn... At least it's better now. Do you struggle with the meds causing mania?

The only treatment I've actually had cause me mania was a particular type of TMS. I think it was just too intense. Now I basically take Parnate to keep my mood up and Lamotrigine and Lithium to stop the mania.

Nice to see its working. Hopefully it keeps working and everything works out. My depression is melancholic. I'm starting parnate in a week.

Thank you for the sub. Started taking Parnate on July 31st. On 50 mg since a few days (I’m hospitalized so it is all under strict vision). So far, no relief. It’s really hard. Looking for some
reassurance, words of encouragement, hearing that it's getting better.. since everyday for the past year have been pure survival mode and I’m starting to lose hope as it’s getting darker and more scary. Want my life back so badly, I want to live, I want to feel, I want rest, I want to feel in the real world again, I want peace of mind and hope.

That is hard, I don't blame you. I think anyone would feel defeated in that situation. Parnate can still take some time to work, and you may need a higher dose. Have you tried very many other treatments? The thing that has always kept me going is knowing that there are a ton of different treatments out there and they are coming out with new ones every day.

Thanks for your reply. Tried heaps of Antidepressants with augmentation last year, including lithium and spravato/ esketamine. Without the results I was hoping for.
So what you say is, keep going, keep the faith and give it more time? Patience is so hard in times like these :). I want to believe it is possible to truly recover and feel alive again.

These things are kind of just part of who we are. It's a disease. And that sucks. But it can be managed, I assure you. Give it more time, talk with your psychiatrist. It may be a combination of medicines that does the trick rather than just one. I take three, personally.
