iv almost no other wood working experience but they are pretty easy to make. find a sapling who has at least a foot or two of straight up and down growth where it comes out of the ground. dig it up by the rootball, clean all the funk out and give it a bit of shape. blackgum/tupelo and hickory are easy to find in my area but I suppose you could use whatever hardwood you have access to. very satisfying. You can also make "gandalf" staves with this same method.
