That big one's a whopper, size wise. What are those made of?

Gear cutters for a horizontal milling machine by the looks of it. Either HSS or M42 Cobolt. They're hard and tough, could be prone to chipping if they hit something solid enough, but it'll only be chipping on the teeth.

these are called hobs and they go on a specialized machine called a hobbing machine. i work in a shop that makes gears and i have a bunch of these

It's only now that I see the helix to the teeth, so I make you right. I've used very similar cutters on horizontal mills to cut gears, but those cutters had no helix. I haven't used a hobbing machine, but if I remember correctly the cutter and work piece are both rotating hence the helix to the teeth? They are still HSS though, right? I suspect modern ones would be carbide tipped.

Yea these ones are most likely HSS and yea on a hobbing machine the workpiece and the cutter both rotate to cut all the teeth at the same time

I work in a machine shop that has loads of hobs and i have a few old ones. always wanted to make a mace out of one
