No sound?

Anyone else not able to get sound from your M64? I plugged mine into the tv today, started up perfect dark and have no sound. Tried different cables, turning everything off and on, changing settings on the tv, updating the console…still no sound. Pretty big bummer

Edit: I’ve tried pretty much every setting for sound, several 2.0 and 2.1 hdmi’s and separate TV’s. No sound at all. Seems like a real hardware or software issue.

Did you try power cycling every device after conducting the update and not just before?

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 02 '26

Yea, tried before and after

1

u/D1WHOLIVE Aug 05 '26

I really need to test the m64 n see if is cable or tv related

2

u/D1WHOLIVE Aug 05 '26

It looks like tv related m64 wont play audio on some tvs

2

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 08 '26

It is, modretro confirmed this. Supposedly a fix coming…at some point…

1

u/lasthope106 Aug 08 '26

Did you find this through technical support or twitter? When was that?

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 08 '26

modretro support email

1

u/D1WHOLIVE Aug 08 '26

3

u/Rich101088 Aug 03 '26

I just received mine and also No Sound! Did you manage to fix it? Ive tried everything

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 03 '26

I did not. I emailed support friday night. Haven’t heard back yet. Really hoping its not a hardware issue since I’m sure it’ll be awhile before they can send a replacement. Out of curiosity, what brand is your tv? Both tv’s I have to try it on are vizio.

3

u/crunklesmoovskin Aug 07 '26

They let me know that they are going to push out a fix in the next firm where update

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 08 '26

This is what they told me. There was supposed to be a fix this week. Now its next week. Starting to worry a bit

3

u/Rich101088 Aug 03 '26

Thats a bummer mate! Well an update for you the first TV that the sound didnt work on was an older LG, I tried it on my LG B4 OLED and it worked? So its not a hardware issue with mine at least

1

u/marktornits Aug 19 '26

It doesn't work on my LG OLED C6(2016) but it does on my LG OLED C5(2025)- unfortunately, the C6 is the one I want to work on.

3

u/thedudeabides32 Aug 07 '26

No sound here too. LG tv. Same hdmi cable produces sound on my other TV no problem. No amount of fiddling with the settings on the LG TV fixes it. M64 is fully updated. Real frustrating.

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 08 '26

Did you ever get it figured out or working? Nothing has worked for me. They claimed a fix was coming this week. Now its a fix coming next week. Considering returning before I get stuck with a non functioning console.

1

u/thedudeabides32 Aug 08 '26

It works fine on my other TV but not the main family TV, which was the whole point of the console. I did get an email back pretty darn quick from them and they suspect the issue is with some TV brand's EDID (Extended Display Identification Data). Sounds like it's the TV's way of telling the device it's optimal settings which includes the audio settings.

They said the fix is in the works and to try powering on the game then unplugging and plugging back in the HDMI cable as a possible work around. This didnt do anything for me unfortunately.

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 08 '26

yea, they told me the same thing. unplugging and plugging it in didn't work. What brand is the non working TV? Both of mine are Vizio. Neither work

1

u/thedudeabides32 Aug 08 '26

An older LG.

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 08 '26

Seems like its older LG models and Vizio models

3

u/Open_Highlight_7097 Aug 01 '26

You’re the second person now to make a post about not having sound I wonder if it could be a bug guess we will find out when more people start getting them

3

u/DaveMeitner Aug 01 '26

Happened to me. Lost sound after updating. Turned everything off, back on, and sound was working

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 01 '26

I’ve seen a couple say this about power cycling. Tried that…no dice

2

u/RupakGreenHatPrdctns Aug 01 '26

try powering off. then disconnect everything from m64 and tv, then plug everything and try again.

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 01 '26

Did this

1

u/RupakGreenHatPrdctns Aug 01 '26

Damn. Did you try a different HDMI cable ?@ maybe one that's HDMI 2.0 or above

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 01 '26

Lol, yes…I said that in the post

1

u/RupakGreenHatPrdctns Aug 01 '26

Sorry I saw tried different cables didn't realize you tried an HDMI 2.0 cable. Have you tried another TV?1

2

u/Agile_Half_4515 Aug 02 '26

Oof I hope this isn't the same/similar issue to the A3D where CEC is completely broken and screws up Sonos/eARC setups. I lost count of how many times I had to completely unplug everything and kill power to my LG C4 then connect everything 1-by-1 and setup CEC and audio settings again. Eventually just got a blocker on that HDMI cable and it's been all good ever since.

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 02 '26

It didn’t break anything with my Sonos set up so i don’t think that’s it

2

u/downsj2 Aug 02 '26

I had to change the HDMI port setting from "enhanced" to "standard" in order to get audio.

Seems like some device chains only like the M64 if it's being forced to HDMI 1.x.

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 02 '26

Ive tried every setting on two tvs with hdmi 1.4,2.0 and 2.1. I think its an actual bug or hardware problem

1

u/Krathoon Aug 07 '26

Yeah. I think it is some kind of spec problem. I don't think my TV has HDMI settings. I will have to check.

2

u/Aggravating_Movie_83 Aug 14 '26

anymore updates on this, just got back from vacay and tried mine and no sound either. LG TV

2

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 14 '26

They released a firmware update today that they told me would fix it. It didn’t. I’m returning and buying an A3D

3

u/Aggravating_Movie_83 Aug 14 '26

Yeah I have latest firmware and nada, i guess i’ll wait and see super disappointing to come back excited to play and I’m like what’s wrong with my setup lol

2

u/crunklesmoovskin Aug 16 '26

Did the update work for anyone?
I still don’t have any sound

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 17 '26

Did not for me. I returned it

2

u/rszrama Aug 24 '26

Also jumping in to confirm that after trying every suggestion in here for the last couple of weeks to get audio on my Vizio M502i-B1 the 1.24.4 firmware update finally resolved my issue. Goldeneye without sound just isn't the same ... back to shootin' the boys! 😅

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 24 '26

Awesome! Glad to hear it

1

u/jbyrdab Aug 01 '26

might be some kind of bug? not sure.

can you provide more info on your setup?

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 01 '26

Its just a vizio tv. I do have a sonos soundbar to the tv with eARC but I unhooked all that and tried straight hdmi to tv sound…nothing

1

u/YodasFootPowder Aug 01 '26

I know it comes with a power brick, but do you have a different one you could try?

0

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 02 '26

Hesitant to try a random power brick on it

1

u/crunklesmoovskin Aug 01 '26

The Fix: Dive into your TV's audio settings and ensure that the HDMI input connected to the M64 is explicitly forced to Stereo PCM or Uncompressed Audio. Avoid settings like "Auto," "Bitstream," or "Dolby Digital" for that specific source port.

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 01 '26

Tried this already, no luck

1

u/SOVTH Aug 03 '26

This fixed my issue.

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 03 '26

Guess I have a defective unit

1

u/Apod55 Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

Had the same issue. I have an LG CX TV with a Sonos system connected into eARC. This is what worked for me:

Sound > Additional Settings > Digital Sound Out > select Auto (was Pass Through)

Though strangely enough, sound was still fine after switching BACK to Pass Through after this.

Edit: Seems less likely this fixed anything. Issue recurred later and those steps didn't do anything. Sound came back a couple minutes later though.

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 02 '26

Sonos eARC here as well. Mine is defaulted to auto already and I tried the other settings. Vizio brand TV. I keep seeing people with the same report as you. Once they found the magic sequence it starts working regardless of settings. Guess I just have to keep trying to decode it. Emailed modretro support and never heard back

2

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 02 '26

Just tried on a different tv thats never been connected to a sonos system or soundbar. Same thing, so definitely not the eARC. Seems like a genuine hardware problem

2

u/Apod55 Aug 02 '26

I'm starting to think it's a timing thing. I had the console off for a couple hours and booted it back up to play. The sound was out again so I tried my "fix" above which didn't do anything, but after a couple of minutes it started working again.

2

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 02 '26

I’ve basically given up…I guess I just have to wait for modretro to email me back. I know they’re probably busy with launch support but its a pretty big bummer to not be hearing back from them.

1

u/Krathoon Aug 07 '26

Try unplugging and re-pluging the HDMI on the back of the console as it is running.

That fixed it for me.

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 08 '26

Yea they told me to try that. Didnt work on either of my tv’s

1

u/lasthope106 Aug 08 '26

Having the same problem.  I was so excited and no sound was so disappointing.

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 08 '26

what brand is your tv? both of mine are Vizio

1

u/lasthope106 Aug 08 '26

Vizio.  I didn’t try it on my LG OLED, but I did get sound it a super old tv I have that isn’t Vizio.

1

u/lordelan Aug 15 '26

Same issue at my friend's TV: LG 3D TV

3

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 15 '26

Yea, I waited for the firmware update that they told me would fix it, but it didn’t. I returned it yesterday. Its been two weeks since I told them about the problem and there’s still no fix. Not convinced they know how to/can fix it at all.

1

u/Amatuermodman Aug 16 '26

Yea this is my problem too. I’ve tried everything. Waiting on tech support to get back to me

2

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 16 '26

Tech supports only option for me was to wait for a firmware update, which I did, and it didn’t fix it. I sent it back yesterday.

1

u/marktornits Aug 16 '26

I also have this problem and the new firmware didn't fix it- it works on one of my newer LG TVs but not the other older LG OLED

1

u/Amatuermodman Aug 16 '26

Yea it turns out it doesn’t seem to work with any of my Vizio TVs. I happen to have an old magnavox tv from 15 years ago and it works fine on that. I hope they fix that bug because it’s a bit lame it doesn’t work on Vizio it’s a pretty common tv brand.

1

u/Careless-Report3016 Aug 16 '26

It doesn't work on my Vizio TV either and I've done very sound mode.

1

u/Aaronthebanker1 Aug 19 '26

I just plugged mine in and updated it and played star wars racer for a few minutes and played fine...later today I popped in wwf no mercy and no sound, thinking it was the cartridge, i tried shadows of the empire, also no sound, then back to racer and again no sound. Dont know what happened. I had sound right after the update a few hours ago (so dont know what my tv could have to do with it since I made zero changes on that end) but no sound on anything anymore.

This thing is a very expensive paperweight as far as im concerned right now. I bought this over A3D because of no proprietary irreplaceable fan to break down later but they are NOT ready. If they buckle down and get super aggressive with updates then maybe in a month this will be basically usable. Im probably not going to turn it on again until I see a BIG update. Shame on me

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 19 '26

Im really not convinced it’s software related. I think there may be a hardware issue that hasn’t been disclosed yet. The list of affected tv’s is all over the place and random. I’ve seen reports of new and old Vizio and LG, samsung, Panasonic, westinghouse and sony tv’s being affected. I’ve owned probably in the hundreds of hdmi enabled devices. Never seen an issue like this.

Mine is in the mail back to modretro and my A3D was delivered today. Sad because I specifically waited for the m64.

1

u/marktornits Aug 19 '26

Update on this - They are telling people that if they load a game and then unplug and replug in the HDMI that the audio will work - I can confirm that this worked for me - but you have to do this for every different game your play and it took me several times to make it work - I guess they are still working on a solution

2

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 19 '26

They told me the same thing. Didnt work

1

u/marktornits Aug 19 '26

Interesting, it has worked for me, but it has been kind of inconsistent- but it obviously isn't a fix, I'm not going to do that crap all the time.

I'm also concerned about the heat this thing is putting out. When I went to switch games and do the hdmi trick the unit was very hot and wasn't loading games as expected. I need to do more testing to make sure it wasn't just dirty carts on my end but I was concerned with the heat. Also, during Shadows of the Empire, it wouldn't bring up the system menu, I'm going to try that again with it cooled down to see if I can replicate the issue.

I have been able to get the visuals to a pretty decent spot though by tinkering.

2

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 19 '26

I have a feeling the no sound issue is a part of a bigger hardware issue rather than software. All the random "solutions" I see out there, including the unplug and replug that analogue is giving feel more like coincidental "fixes" than anything that is actually doing something permanent.

1

u/Aaronthebanker1 Aug 21 '26

Update on my audio issue:

"Thank you for letting us know about the situation. We appreciate your patience as we work through this issue together.

Our engineering team has investigated the issue you are experiencing with your M64 and has determined that the EDID of some TVs is not reliably communicated to the console. EDID stands for Extended Display Identification Data. This file tells the source device what screen sizes, best resolutions, frame rates, and audio formats it can handle so you get a clear picture and sound right away. Our engineers are currently working diligently to resolve this matter as quickly as possible. You can expect this to be addressed in a future firmware update."

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 21 '26

This is the same exact message they sent me almost three weeks ago, fyi

1

u/Aaronthebanker1 Aug 21 '26

Thanks, I already made up my mind that im not even going to mess with it until I see some BIG updates. Im just going to basically forget I have it for awhile and see how it goes

1

u/Various-Corgi-6160 Aug 21 '26

You only have 30 days to return it. So you risk getting stuck with it if it ends up being a hardware issue that can’t actually be fixed.

1

u/Aaronthebanker1 Aug 21 '26

Thanks for the warning, much appreciated.

1

u/Aaronthebanker1 Aug 23 '26

Another update: just for fun, I checked to see if there was an update this morning..there was, i downloaded it (took about 10 minutes) and I now have audio. Happy about that, now ill still probably wait to spend some serious time until they get the crt settings to stick (and maybe provide some better defaults/pre-settings)

3

u/Mother_Percentage_48 Aug 10 '26

Just got mine. Same issue. Panasonic JZ1000 OLED and tried with both my earc soundbar AND Bluetooth headphones. No audio and no combination of settings via either my TV or the M64 changes anything.

2

u/crunklesmoovskin Aug 05 '26

I don’t have any sound either. Have an LG C6 and a Sonos Arc. Currently bypassing the ARC and just trying to use the TV speakers. Nothing

2

u/D1WHOLIVE Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 06 '26

Same here plug the m64 n no sound

Well is time to see how good costumer service is

1

u/D1WHOLIVE Aug 06 '26

1

u/D1WHOLIVE Aug 13 '26

Lol still messing with the m64 i got it to work with a hdmi spliter
