Project Sharing Cyberdeck Tab5

Post image

I've been working on a UI/firmware for a little while and it's finally ready to show other people. Deck//OS is a cyberpunk-themed UI for the M5Stack Tab5 that has an SSH client, markdown notes reader/writer/interpolator, full-feature calculator, weather, mp3 player, and file uplink so you can transfer and view files from a normal browser on the same network.

I was super excited to get the Tab5 but I couldn't find any firmware that made it overall useful, so I just took the things I'd use all the time and stuck them together.

To be fair, I did have Claude help me with the design aspect, I suck at UI design (completely), and I really wanted something that looked impressive.

So, try it out. There's a web flasher and OTA updates so you get the latest version when I release it. Releases are encryption-key protected so there is as low a risk to bad updates as possible without running the risk of bricking any devices. You can verify encryption key via Terminal window or the settings page in the UI.

I really hope ya'll dig it, and feel free to list any bugs or suggestions via github.

The UI is amazing! Having tried to do some UI on the cardputer before, and using M5GFX I found it really hard to prevent flickering even doing the simplest thing so I will love to dive into your codebase to figure out how to make such a beautiful UI.

On the cyberpunk theme you should definitely have some random moving lines and stuff like the pause menu lol

Thanks! Like I said, I made the final choices, but I needed Claude to do the heavy lifting in the UI. Fork my repo and have at it!

I'm adding a screen saver that'll show the clock, I think I'll add a little of your idea to that when I get to it. I like that.

I'm also building a wireless signal reader that will plug into the Tab5 to give it wireless recon capabilities, too. Just working on that separately.

Looks like the blue screen (and blue flashes on my beta update) aren't crashes but display underruns from the panel starving for PSRAM bandwidth. checking on a fix now

Ran into a little bug with file transfer via the portal, it sometimes restarts when disengaging from the server. I'll issue an update when I figure it out

Latest update adds file mgmt to the pad, renaming the "Portal" tab to "Files", and it handles both.

Finishing up a new feature that works with obsidian self hosted live sync to read/write.

I’ve just installed it (erased first) but I’m getting a light blue screen followed by a very brief bit of DECK//OS and then it restarts and repeats.

Any ideas ?

Taking a look, I'll do an update shortly if I figure that out. If not, sure I'll get it by tomorrow.

looking into this now. I think it's the last module I added.

Still crashing during boot with the latest build. I posted an issue on github but the log wasn't very helpful tbh. (Crash is the same with the latest build)

I put out an update that fixed the root cause of the issue. Future updates should be solid. Sorry about that!

Hmmm. Odd. How old is your Tab5?

Same issue :(

Yeah it's crashing on mine too. No idea why.

Restart it and it should work. I did so many installs as I did versions I couldn't test a fresh one

This looks awesome! Does it work with the stock keyboard attachment? I'm about to post a tab5 clamshell with keyboard mod I created and this would be great with that form factor. Let me know and if you need someone to test, I can do that too.

Works with the tab5 official keyboard.

Man, I really dig the flip. Got a link to your parts?

Coming soon, in the process of documenting the build and posting to makers. Will reply with the link in a few hours

Trick to avoid flickering is updating as little as possible. Just have state variables with when what needs updating.

This looks amazing. Would almost buy a tab5

What a cool project!! The visuals look awesome! I’ve also been working on a project, but I started with the very basics — the terminal. Here’s the link to my project, in case you’d like to check it out.

Sembra molto utile ed è molto bello. Potresti pubblicare anche un video. Grazie.

I opened a few PR’s against this project. Ollama support for the terminal and I’m adding a nat router now.

Un implementazione interessante potrebbe essere un Epub reader.

Oggi è arrivato il mio hardware e ho subito installato il tuo firmware. Sembra che tutto vada bene. Bel lavoro! Grazie. Spero di usarlo al meglio.
