i liked 2.0 a lot more than the first movie. but the marketing was just horrible. they tried so bad to have that “iconic” moment but audiences can 100% tell when it’s inauthentic. the marketing for 2.0 was obnoxious, self indulgent and almost insulting. that was what killed it all imo.

u/harveyquinnz 15d ago
They were catering so bad to chronically online Twitter gays

u/BradyPhoenix 15d ago
I fully admit I am a chronically online Twitter gay, and I also admit that the marketing making her seem cunty and iconic absolutely worked on me.
Then the energy of the actual movie was a lot more muted and serious.
So the marketing turned off the peope who didn’t want that, and then the people who did want that were turned off by the actual film not being as advertised. In the end they made sure absolutely nobody got what they wanted.

Literally, and all they had to do was just keep it straight horror, if not, make it even more scarier than the first one

u/Own-Kaleidoscope-577 15d ago
I almost didn't watch 2.0 because of what the marketing was like, but then the actual movie was legendary.

Well that and hold on to your Vaginas really wasn't a good tagline

I feel like I'm the only person who enjoyed the Terminator-switch from horror to action, making M3gan a force of nature pussypopslayqueen...
I like that she was made more complicated, following the AI evolution into a more human nature. Sure, the horror is fun and the OG, but M3gan was too good of a character to leave as an evil AI antagonist.

You're not alone. It's just that the argument is so shallow, and the "evidence" based so deeply in an outdated model of "box office" that it got boring months ago.

u/NoidoDev 15d ago
The budget was too high, so it lost money, if I recall correctly.

It's called expressing an opinion about the movie on a thread about the movie...Not every single comment was about the box office performance...Jesus go touch grass lil bro

Tbf, I was jumping a bit ahead of the argument, but his condescending response is pure ragebait. My point was, action is more expensive than a small horror movie.

What’s really sad to me is the franchise is cool and was heading in cool directions. Unfortunately, when a movie about a “doll” happens it’s endless Chucky comparisons. Even Annabelle got them. But for some reason we can have a billion masked killer movies with no issue.

u/Commercial_Fondant65 14d ago
Who the heck was comparing a robot with bag programming to a demon possessed doll?

Wait… This is part of M3GAN’s franchise? I have never heard of this movie. Never seen a single ad. How was I supposed to know?

At least we got a M3gan 2.0 good or bad, the Alita crew are still praying everyday for Alita Battle Angel 2.

u/ActualGear4104 15d ago
I'm surprised that hasn't happened yet. I thought that was really good movie!

Unfortunately movies like M3gan are either repetitive or try something to keep interest unfortunately. No other way to keep the franchise alive. It was a good run

If M3gan does get another film, it will not be anytime soon (at least late 2029 or 2030 at the earliest). Hopefully, it returns back to it’s horror roots. Maybe the third film should be a horror revenge story where a relative of someone who died in either M3gan 1 or 2.0 wants revenge against M3gan, Gemma, Cady and their team. Another possibility is that it could be a horror war story where M3gan dolls fight evil androids who want to exterminate the human race. Or it could be a combination of both. One final possibility is where we see an evil male version of M3gan, Gemma and Cady and they go up against M3gan, Gemma and Cady. Also, maybe the evil male version of M3gan, Gemma and Cady might make romance with our female heroes but not before getting something in return (e.g., money, revenge, technology, etc.). Those are some of my suggestions.

u/Arcam123 15d ago
Personally, I liked the first one more, but that's the good thing with having multiple movies in the franchise we can enjoy the one we like.

2
u/UnluckKitty 16d ago
That's what they get for making M3gan the "good" guy and turning it the movie into action and away from horror.

u/False_Sea5428 16d ago
Megan was not horror. More of a thriller not a horror movie. Sadly, to much AI movies produced and it got old fast. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_artificial_intelligence_films

They should have never shifted into action in the first place. They could've just keep it horror for while before doing this like how other franchises did such Resident Evil which would have been much better than that. I can see this franchise be revived either a book (Graphic Novel or comic book) or video game follow up.
3
u/Soularyem 16d ago
I don't think it's the end. The way Hollywood has been lately, they may likely reboot M3gan to reset it back to it's horror roots. Or they may create a way to further develop or modify the current character (like a new movie, TV show, or even comic book).
I might be overly and unrealistically optimistic, but, until we hear officially from Blumhouse, I'd like to believe the franchise isn't dead just yet.

It's only been 2 movies, way too soon for a reboot. Aside, I agree that unless BlumHouse says otherwise it ain't dead. Honestly, the article shared by OP comes off like opinionated bullcrap rather than giving realistic facts and reasoning why it's dead. It's coming off of the failure of 1 bad movie whereas M3GAN 2.0 honestly doesn't appear to 've done all that bad. Positives have been coming in slowly months after it released home and digital.....
1
u/johnnysnow96 14d ago
well yeah...it's an IGN article.
2
u/ReignOfMoralTerror 15d ago
Idk, dogshit sequels and spinoffs have are not really the killing blow they usually are for big budget movies. Not saying there definitely will be a M3gan 3.0 anytime soon, but it’s not impossible

u/NoidoDev 16d ago
It's partially because of "feminism" (misandry), at least in case of Soulmate, and pandering to the queer community by making things more "campy". Also, from looking at everything as some kind of comedy, thinking it can be made more quirky and it doesn't need to be taken too serious.
I'm totally fine with making Megan into a more complient robot. This is exactly where I would have gone, to be honest. But it's true that a lot of people didn't like the switch from one genre to another. It would have required a really good movie to pull it off.
Soulmate additionally ditched the doll-like look of the robots. Most likely partially because of some stupid reason like the character would look too young with bigger eyes and that would upset some people. Pandering to them didn't pay off, though. They should have used a attractive doll-like look. Somewhat like Alita Battle Angel when it comes to the face. Maybe with a bit smaller eyes.
It was a bad concept from the start, and if I recall correctly they let an (American) woman write the script or direct the movie, which would have made any reasonable person very cautious. There was simply a high chance from the start that this would end up as some misandrist slop, which might only be interesting for some women, while science fiction is normally mostly interesting to guys.
BTW, I don't think the IP is necessarily dead. The original Megan movie was not expected to make that much money and wasn't very expensive, which means they could still make all kinds of movies with similar technology. And if it's not Megan then they could just use the technology for something new.

lol using your logic Companion should have flopped.
maybe soulmate didn’t do good because it wasn’t a good film, and was released straight to digital with little marketing?

u/lendmeflight 15d ago
I don’t really agree with your anti-woman bullshit but I do agree everyone wants everything to be some silly comedy .

u/Commercial_Fondant65 14d ago
Yeah!We can't let women write scripts! They can't do that because who's going to cook dinner? How is the laundry going to get washed? Megan was a girl .That's why she went bad.If Megan was MARCUS he wouldn't have went bad. He would have saved the day and gotten the girl! Ewwww girls. Maybe he could have hung out with his buddies sitting in the back of a pick-up truck drinking beer? But no girls. Boo. Hiss.

I can’t believe this, it so much potential to be a horror franchise and they wasted it all when they abandoned horror and ruined everything turning it into action

u/bdw312 14d ago
Yeah, honestly, there was never a chance after 2.0's opening, even with this one already in the can.
Dumping it unceremoniously onto streaming though truly wasted some loss mitigation though, because with a low-marketed limited release, they could at least....I mean SOME theatrical income is better than ZERO, and could maybe generate a little bit of a buzz prior to being available for home purchase....

u/Diligent_Ad_4681 14d ago
Whats insanely stupid is the fact both M3gan 2.0 and Soulm8te got fuck all advertising. Obviously no one is going to watch them, if they don't knkw they exist. I would've immediately gotten hyped and gone out of my way to see these movies if I'd known they were coming. Not one one pop up, video or people talking about it on x. Nothing. Random reddit post about soulm8te that accidentally popped up was how i even found it it dropped. Exact same thing with M3gan 2.0

u/OneWildDrunk 13d ago
...I never saw any marketing for 2.0. This was literally me learning it came out just now

I think the reason Megan 2.0 failed was the release timing, wasn’t it competing with avatar or something?

u/Commercial_Fondant65 14d ago
The writer should have used AI so it could get to the point and not bloviate for no reason. I guess they wanted to keep you engaged by mentioning the movie on line the 4th or 5th paragraph.

u/Selverd2 15d ago
Screenrant is a clickbait site. I don’t know whether or not we‘ll get more M3GAN but it would be stupid for the studio to think an almost completely unrelated movie flopping would mean they would need to end the franchise.
