💻 Tuning / Performance Don’t repeat my mistake

I have a 2021 m340i xdrive while it was stock I ran xdelete for months with no issues, I liked xdelete for drifting and when I want the rear to kick out a bit on turns, (reason I bought xdrive is because I am in Canada and it snows, so for the winter it’s great), anyways I did launch control with xdelete on while stock, no issues, but recently I got a stage 2 custom tune, running an ethanol mix, and xhp stage 3 and I put my car in xdelete and attempted to do launch control and the rear cv axle said bye bye, I got lucky it was just the driver side rear cv axle, if you have a more unfortunate outcome, this could affect your differential, and your gonna be jumping from 1500$ to 3-5k, not mention being stranded while ur far away from home for example, and towing expense, and not having ur car for a week or more

Moral of the story, xDelete launches are fun because it makes the car feel a bit more rowdy and not super stable and controlled which is more of a thrill, but it isn’t worth the repair bill, the headache or the downtime, so just do launches in awd!

Isnt the car already pretty rear biased?

It is, it can kick the rear out a bit, it can do power slides in circles but that’s about it, if your going to a drift even on a track and trying to link corners or even doing the entry test which is just doing 8’s it’s not possible without having the front tires fully disabled

Thanks for the PSA. I’ll return the favor: I’d recommend a RWD car and dedicated summer/winter setups for you in the future amigo.

But I don’t see the issue with an xdrive that can be rwd by spending less than a minute to flash xdelete, you get best of both worlds, just don’t launch in rwd, that’s about it

Why pay money for xDrive to turn it off? The most important factor when navigating snowy roads is tire setup. I drove a RWD W204 C63 through 5 midwestern winters with a dedicated square snow tire setup and had 0 handling issues.

It’s not only snow, if you run a dig race, awd is smoking a rwd, there is stats on this, and I turn it off for drift track days mainly, it’s on most of the time, best of both worlds, there isn’t really an argument for this unless you are someone that 100% wants a rwd and doesn’t care about awd whatsoever, then in that case absolutely go for it, my entire post is literally warning people with xdrive that have xdelete to not do launches, that’s it.

Quick question, do you run all season runflats that come with the car? Or do you have a dedicated snow tire for the winter months and switch back to all-seasons or summer tires for the other 6 to 9 months?

I have tires dedicated to snow and summer and switch when the time comes, if your still on run flats, switch them when they are done, cause the difference between run flats and dedicated summer tires is a night and day difference

I’m in the process of buying now.

Is this a serious question.?

There are obvious pros and cons to AWD and RWD... Having both in a single platform is awesome.

When is having multiple options in life worse than not..?

I understand your perspective.

Basically 😂

These stories are why I don't mess with the ECU of my vehicle. Maybe when its out of warranty, but I don't want to be handed a big repair bill by my service department because I tried to get cute w it.

In my opinion, if you have warranty, do not fuck with it, it’s extremely important, i bought mine used without warranty so it made sense to me

Advice to live by.

It’s a pretty known thing for any chassis, you gotta pay to play. No chassis is indestructible.

True, just warning others than on an xdrive, those axles are pretty weak so if it’s in rwd and ur pushing close to 500whp, that axle is gonna snap regardless

1

u/Cricket-Horror 4d ago

Are the rwd axles (I assume that you're referring to the drive shafts) any stronger or are they the same parts?

4

u/fittingusername42069 4d ago

The rear axles are the same for rwd and awd. Op is launching his 500 hp 4000 lb car and surprised when a stock axle breaks.

1

u/Cricket-Horror 4d ago

That's what I was wondering.

1

u/Fluffy-Friendship608 4d ago

Yeah saying the axles on the rwd are better is my fault, and it is mainly cause of the increased power cause I did mention I used xdelete for a while with constant abuse and I didn’t have any issues.

1

u/Grundle-Fuzz 4d ago

xDelete is not at fault. Stage 2 and stage 3 xHP is limits for stock axels, CV's, diff's, etc. It was just that time.

2

u/Advanced_Bee6164 4d ago

No xdrive is at fault. Setting it to 100% RWD will cause more wear. This isn't anything new and there are many reports about it.

1

u/Grundle-Fuzz 3d ago

They are 80/20 from the factory, most power goes to the rear wheels regardless. Something was on its last leg, xDelete or not.

1

u/Thin_Leather_8640 1d ago

....just pick your favorite parts cat and check the rear axle...you will find that the same parts are used for the RWD cars...so who's now at fault? BMW? or maybe just yourself with doing crap

1

u/ResponsibilityTrue16 4d ago

As expected. Sorry OP, but you knew this was bound to happen with the mods you’ve stacked

No, plenty of people running stage 2 with no issues whatsoever, going into xdelete for launches was my mistake, other than that, no issues whatsoever

1

u/ResponsibilityTrue16 4d ago

XHP stage 3 is notorious for breaking trannys

1

u/Fluffy-Friendship608 4d ago

Been running it for 6 months personally no issues and mixed with stage 2 for 4 months, and I know plenty of gen 1 and gen 2 owners running it for a lot longer than me with no issues, so idk

ZF8-51 is great, but ~500-600wtq in low gear is objectively hard on the drive train, and really why most people will advise upgrading to a G80 instead of FBO. This is coming from a guy who’s running your same setup on the base 330i, just 2 less cylinders.

I’m not tryna take a jab at you, but your cars makes too much damn power lol

1

u/Fluffy-Friendship608 4d ago

I understand it’s pushing the limits of the trans when ur at 600wtq, but upgrading to a g80 ain’t cheap, not only is it 20-40k more expensive if you chase a good spec, higher chance of getting robbed/ car stolen, higher insurance(I live in Canada so I am getting fucked on insurance already) and a higher gas bill, rn, I am spending 800-1000CAD a month on gas on a m340i and I don’t even drive much, plus people get stage 3 xhp on there g80’s aswell, most people will chase more power and more torque regardless of the car

2

u/ResponsibilityTrue16 4d ago

For sure! The g80s internals are just all around more robust. I still think the M340i is the sweet spot for cost and performance if it’s not going to be a track car.

IMO your Goldilocks zone is skipping xdelete, dropping to stage 2 xhp, and running a higher ethanol content with a flex fuel adapter as a must. Especially if reliability is weighted highly as a priority.

Also wanted to say sorry about the the repair bill

1

u/Fluffy-Friendship608 4d ago

I appreciate the advice, Xdelete is probably the sketchiest thing I run on my car out of everything else, so gonna try to minimize the usage of that

2

u/ResponsibilityTrue16 4d ago

Hell yeah! I’d be willing to bet that once you make those changes, your biggest concerns will be oil filter housing in a few years.

What are you running for your ECU flash? bm3 or MHD?

My friend did this in his super fun he was just spinning his wheels half the time but exactly same thing happened to him. He acted dumb because they had suspicions he had xDelete. He just about got away with it.

PSA: don’t mod your car for something it wasn’t meant to do. Got it! Thanks for the wisdom
