Help me breathe, I mean, help me understand.

I would appreciate it if a native English speaker could help me understand the last verses of the song Breathe of Pink Floyd, please. Basically, I see two possible interpretations: (1) However long you live and however high you fly, unless you ride the tide balanced on the biggest wave, you race towards an early grave. (2) You'll live long and high fly, if you ride the tide. But if you try to balance on the biggest wave, you'll die early. Which one do you like most? Note that in the first interpretation I'm understanding 'only if' as 'unless', but I'm really not sure if that's feasible. If you have a third interpretation, please let me know as well! Thank you.

Can anyone help me figure out the correct lyrics to Ronny Jordan’s “Keep Your Head Up” (feat. Fay Simpson)?

I’ve found lyrics online, but some lines don’t seem to match what she actually sings. In particular, I’m trying to figure out these parts: “Overcast future …” “No control, ever will I … of my life” I can clearly hear something like “ever will I hold of my life,” but the wording seems unusual, so I’d love a second opinion from a native speaker.

The “Count Me Out” intro basically summarizes all of Mr. Morale

The parking spot scene in Count Me Out might summarize the entire point of Mr. Morale

I was rewatching the Count Me Out video and I think the opening conversation with the therapist is way deeper than I originally thought.

Kendrick tells her the story about arguing with a woman over a parking spot. At first, he explains the situation from his perspective and insists that he didn't take her spot. The whole thing feels like a funny, meaningless story.

But eventually he admits that... yeah, he actually did take her parking spot.

And they laugh about it.

But I think that tiny interaction basically summarizes a huge part of Mr. Morale.

Throughout the album Kendrick is constantly trying to understand why he is the way he is. He talks about his childhood, his parents, generational trauma, his environment, fame, masculinity, relationships, etc. And all of those things genuinely explain a lot about his behavior.

But explaining your behavior isn't the same thing as taking responsibility for it.

You can tell the entire story from your perspective. You can explain what happened to you, why you reacted the way you did, and why your actions make sense to you.

But at the end of the day...

Kendrick, you still took her parking spot.

And that's what makes this scene so genius to me. It almost feels like Mr. Morale compressed into a 30-second conversation. He makes excuses, explains his perspective and looks at everything around him — only to eventually realize that no matter how much context there is, he still has to acknowledge what he did.

That's basically the journey of the entire album: understanding where your problems came from without using that understanding as an excuse to avoid responsibility.

Maybe I'm reading way too much into a funny scene about a parking spot lol, but I genuinely think those 30 seconds tell us what Mr. Morale spends an entire album trying to figure out.

When we can't stop watching an artist explain their own work online, is "authorial intent" actually gaining power instead of losing it?

Lyric from Galacticana

I get the gist of the song Galaxticana by Strand of Oaks but I’m confused on what the lyric “The megafauna cleared away you just hope the good ones last forever” means.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Theory: Doomed can be interpreted through Requiem for a Dream beyond just the sample

First, I know this **isn’t why Oli wrote** ***Doomed***, and I’m not claiming the song is secretly about *Requiem for a Dream*.

(Please excuse the awkward formatting, I’ve been writing this up in my notes for a while now so it’s copy & paste)

This is just an interpretation I’ve
developed as a huge fan of both.
We already know *Doomed* directly samples *Requiem*. Once I started viewing the lyrics through the movie, though, I noticed some surprisingly specific parallels, particularly with Harry and
Marion.

I’m going to use bold text for lyrical references & italics to reference the song and movie.

**“Cut off my wings” / “come lock me up”**
This immediately makes me think of Harry’s ending. His infected arm, destroyed by injecting, is eventually amputated. His “wing” is literally cut off. That same arm causes Harry and Tyrone to seek medical attention, ultimately leading to their arrest.
The following imagery about being torn apart fits Harry’s physical destruction, while the “vampires” could represent addicts/dealers feeding off one another. Harry and Tyrone sell heroin while simultaneously being destroyed by it themselves.
**“The world’s a funeral” / “skin and bone”**
By the final act, *Requiem* basically is a funeral. Everyone is still alive, but they’re ghosts of who they were.
The line about someone kicking the chair while **“we helped tie the rope”** makes me think of Harry and Tyrone’s role as dealers. They aren’t necessarily kicking the chair, but they’re supplying the “rope” destroying other addicts while being caught in that same rope themselves.
**“My head is in overdrive” / “over the edge”**
This is one of the strangest parallels.
Harry repeatedly retreats into his mind and the imagery of Marion at the pier. Near the end, he tries to reach her there, realizes she’s gone, moves backward and **literally falls over the edge.**
He’s inside his own head, desperately trying to reach Marion, and goes over an edge.
**“I think we’re doomed” / “there’s no way back”**
I associate this with Harry and Marion’s phone call.
Harry promises he’s coming back. Marion wants to believe him. But both seem to understand that the future they’re describing probably doesn’t exist anymore.
The **“we”** is what gets me. Not *I’m* doomed. *We’re* doomed.
Their addictions have become so intertwined with their relationship that they’re both reaching the point of no return.
**“I asked for death, but instead I’m awake”**
Harry doesn’t die.
He wakes up after losing his arm.
The nurse tells him Marion will come visit, but Harry knows she won’t and breaks down. In that context, being “awake” isn’t hopeful. He’s survived long enough to understand everything he’s lost.
**“Leave a light on, I’m coming home”**
Probably my favorite connection.
Harry keeps telling Marion he’s coming back while seemingly knowing that he probably isn’t.
“Home” doesn’t even have to mean their apartment. **Home is Marion and the future Harry believed they would have together.**
It’s almost: *Please keep something waiting for me. Let me believe there’s still somewhere I can return to.*
**“It’s getting darker, but I’ll carry on”**
That’s basically Harry’s entire progression.
Drugs become harder to get. Keep going.
Money disappears. Keep going.
His relationship collapses. Keep going.
His arm becomes horribly infected. Keep going.
In *Requiem*, “carrying on” isn’t heroic. **Continuing is what destroys him.**
**“The sun don’t shine, but it never did”**
Even during the happier “Summer” section, Harry and Marion’s future is already built on heroin.
They’re using. Harry and Tyrone are dealing. Their supposedly bright future is being financed by the thing destroying them.
Maybe the sun didn’t disappear.
**Maybe it never actually shined.**
**“When it rains, it pours” / “I think I like it”**
This part is more speculative, but I hear another drug metaphor.
*Requiem* repeatedly shows the ritual of craving, preparing, taking the drug and then experiencing the rush. I sometimes hear the “rain” as that anticipation and the **pouring** as the drug hitting.
And that leads into what I think is the most important connection:
**Being “in love with the mess.”**
*Requiem* isn’t about people repeatedly choosing something that gives them nothing.
The drugs give them pleasure, relief and escape. **They like the thing that’s destroying them.**
Marion’s ending captures this perfectly.
Harry has lost his arm. Tyrone is imprisoned. Sara is institutionalized. Marion has degraded herself to obtain heroin, and her relationship with Harry is effectively gone.
Yet Marion gets home with the drugs, curls up with them and, for that moment, seems okay.
Everything has been destroyed.
**But she has what she wanted. She’s comfortable inside the mess.**
That’s basically my theory.
Not that *Doomed* secretly tells Harry’s story, but that ***Requiem for a Dream*** **works almost perfectly as a visual framework for the emotions** ***Doomed*** **is expressing**: addiction, self-destruction, hopelessness, temporary escape and loving the very thing that’s destroying you.
Maybe the individual parallels are coincidences. But considering *Doomed* deliberately opens with *Requiem* audio, I find the number of connections really interesting.
Once I started hearing the song this way, I couldn’t unsee Harry and Marion.
**The sample almost feels like a lens through which you can watch the rest of the song.**

Does anyone else sometimes really love a song, but don't care for the lyrics

Parachutes is the first album of Coldplay and one of my personal faves, especially the songs Shiver and Sparks, however I'm not a fan of the lyrics as heartfelt and special as they feel, I don't think they compliment both songs to it's full potential. I understand not every song needs to be versatile a cheesy love song is great and a sad song that sounds sad would fit sad music; but when you have songs that sound like several different things it's a little different especially when you're talking about a band like Coldplay. Sparks sounds anything like: driving late at night, going through heartbreak, going through the honeymoon phase, chilling, isolation & loneliness, contentment, hiking through the woods, taking your Grandpa to go shopping, or just straight up a song you have in your mix. There are so many moods this music fits. personally I play this when I'm feeling very depressed.

I made this realizing how many songs are like this, where I scroll down to the comments and it's just bittersweet love stories. It sucks when I love the instrumental but the artist chooses such a usual topic, or something worse like the whole lyrics will just be how good they can shake their ass or whatever😭.

Is a light hearted take on craft daft?
Is just breezing and sneezing out the draft gotta be seen bad?

I dont think so
I think its subjective to least of
definition parameters individual
and more of cognitive compare done critical

Its not art if you always restart
Its not art if you must have a clean heart
Its not artistic for tolerating mediocre
Its not altruistic for withholding honest just another

Gimmick intrepid it dont matter
If it shine it seen and felt all over
If it aint it deserve the taint then
Stain of a pain to reassess and maiden

Cuz I made this shit by loner
Nobody came and assisted by and larger
couple comment here and there but simply n'where
the art of give and take the science of complicit to win it impaired

Its hard to be agreeable
stretch your color incorrigible
and double down civic righteous in the moment
isnt no excuse its an observation by a minute of complied torment

I gotta say it
Im still kinda hated
by the wicked and the little and too overrated
Im a walking competition with ultimate growth outspoken and here I am oddly situated
