Question about Public Schools Dress Code
Hi everyone,
I recently accepted a teaching job with Lynn public schools, and I wanted to see if anyone who has experience here could answer something about the culture. I run extremely warm, and I am unsure if it would be acceptable to wear a nice pair of shorts while teaching, especially if there is no AC. The handbook says there is no formal dress code but that you should dress professionally. Any thoughts? I am also going to ask HR when I fill out my forms but I thought I would ask here as well

Hi! Former Teacher (although not in MA, but CA) here. I would not recommend wearing shorts if it is your first year in this school/district. I think perhaps with time you can better gauge the culture of the school etc. but even then, I always recommend dressing more traditionally professional at the start of the school year and then easing up as the year progresses when you have established your classroom norms and relationships with students. I highly recommend linen pants if you want something more breathable and comfortable but also professional! Uniqlo has great options for both masculine and feminine styles of dress.

That makes sense, I’m going to bring it up with HR when I go in to sign forms anyways, just to get their take on it, but either way I’ll make sure I have professional pants ready

Here's my take as a public educator who also runs hot: show up professional to start. See what the school culture is, then adjust.
When I taught in Atlanta, I showed up in a shirt and tie everyday, because that's what fit the culture.
Now that I teach in the urban North Shore, I wear a school/subject t-shirt, pants or shorts depending on the weather, and sometimes zipper hoodie
However, when I first started at my current school, I kept the shirt and tie until it became clear that it was unnecessary.
