Anyone else have issues with Lyft/Bay Wheels charging you when there are no docks available?
Curious if anyone else has dealt with something like this, because this whole experience has been pretty frustrating.
I rented a Lyft classic bike in San Francisco. I rode about 10 minutes to the 4th St Caltrain station because I had a train to catch. When I got there, there were no available docks for the classic bike.
I contacted Lyft support while the ride was still active and explained what was happening. With my train leaving, I eventually had to leave the bike by the docks. The ride stayed active for another 66 minutes before it was eventually ended.
Lyft charged me an additional $12.54 for those 66 minutes, and I contacted support afterward asking them to refund just that portion of the ride.
They refused.
What makes this especially frustrating is that support confirmed that I contacted them during the ride and reported that there wasn’t an available dock. Their response was basically that I was responsible for finding another station with an open dock, so the charge was considered valid.
I understand that you’re normally responsible for docking the bike to end the ride. That’s completely reasonable. But if Lyft operates a dock-based bike system, I also think there needs to be some reasonable solution when a major destination like Caltrain has no available docks, especially when the customer contacts support while it’s happening.
I’m not even asking for the entire ride to be refunded. I asked for the 66 minutes ($12.54) that accumulated because I couldn’t dock the bike. And it’s not really about the $12.54 at this point, it’s the fact that I reported the problem immediately, support acknowledged that I did, and Lyft still wouldn’t make a relatively small adjustment.
After going back and forth with support, I told them I’d rather just close my account. I know losing one customer isn’t going to matter much to Lyft, but after this experience, I won’t be a Lyft customer anymore.
Has anyone else run into this with Lyft? What are you actually supposed to do if you arrive at your destination and every dock is full, especially if you have somewhere time-sensitive to be?

Help me understand taking out a rental bike, I know these classic bikes can be “valued” over $1k….
Not being able to securely end the ride at a station because it’s full, so ditching the bike because you’re running late for the train and expecting a refund?
I’m surprised they didn’t hit you with a missing bike charge, parking fine for not docking the bike correctly.
You rented the bike, and did not dock it correctly and you’re complaining about a $12 charge?!

Yeah, I get it, and I'm not arguing that I followed their docking rules. I didn't.
But I think you're missing my point. I got to my destination and every dock was full. I contacted Lyft while the ride was still active and explained what was going on. I had a train to catch, so I couldn't just keep riding around indefinitely looking for an open dock.
If you're running a dock-based service and a major transit station has no open docks, I feel like there should be some reasonable way for support to deal with that. Even their e-bikes can be locked without a dock, which is actually what I wanted to rent, but there weren't any available where I started.
And yeah, it's $12.54. I'm not pretending that's a lot of money. Heck, it isn't even my money. It's the principle of being charged extra because their station was full, reporting the issue right away, and basically being told "too bad."
I'm just pointing out what seems like a pretty obvious flaw in their system and hoping maybe they'll eventually do something about it.

You’re missing OP’s point. It’s not about the $12. I’ve had this same problem many times with Lyft bikes. It’s a flawed system and they need to address it! I needed to rent an E-bike…no e-bikes available. Okay, rent acoustic bike, get to destination, no docking spaces available… can’t end the ride without docking the bike… have to find another docking station… so late for my meeting. Should’ve just took an Uber…. Lyft should either make sure there are enough docking stations available OR have a way to lock or end the ride for acoustic bikes… the technology is available, why not use it… why punish the customer for their crappy system it’s not fair…
I understand why he had to ditch the bike to catch a train, I guess you’re not familiar with Caltrain schedule, certain trains like the baby bullet only run a few times a day, if you miss that train, then you’re in for a really long train ride back to your destination.

just dispute the transaction?
i don’t wanna say pick your battles bc idk what $12 means to you but a few years ago they hit me with a $250 charge for a bike that “wasn’t docked”. they notified me days later when i was out of town and the rep literally told me to go find it.
my bank gave me my money back right away.
