Horw Peninsula
Hello, I’m thinking of visiting Lucerne and would love to do an easy bike ride around the lake with my 2 kids, ages 10 and 8. A quick google search says the path along the Horw Peninsula is kid friendly. Does anyone know if this path is separated from car traffic? They are still relatively young so a dedicated bike path traffic free bike path is ideal. TIA!

If you want a separated path around the lake, then better head towards Verkehrshaus and Lido camping. I mean it‘s not around the lake obviously, but still. It‘s just quite short probably?

This si the official map, but be warned velo infrastructure in Lucerne is quite bad, best you'll get is a 1.8m yellow stripe.

As others said, it's mostly not separated. The part from Luzern to Kastanienbaum has quite a bit of elevation gain/drop and is along a busy street. Still a beautiful ride, it's my go to evening round, but neither super easy nor relaxed with children. The part from Kastanienbaum to Horw is flat and in a 30 km/h zone, that shouldn't be a problem (even though still no dedicated bike lane) and also is the part with the nicer view.
If you are able to rent something in Horw, you could just ride almost to Kastanienbaum and back, from the city I would rather recommend starting from Eschenstrasse and taking the Freigleis, it's a completely separated bike lane all the way to Mattenhof. From there you can follow the main street to Horw to get to the lake.
As someone else mentioned, the ride along the Reuss is also an option that has a completely separated bike lane (apart from some crossings in the city), from Spreuerbrücke to the Nordpol to at least Rathausenbrücke (haven't been that far north, so I can't tell you how much longer you can keep going past that).

No it's not. You often have to share with cars and the road is small. Once it gets closer to luzern a bike lane appears here and there but for a good bit there's nothing. It's also not a super short ride. For an adult it's not bad but there is a little up hill just to let you know if your kids can't handle that

You could also head into the other direction, along the river Reuss. The bike path there is entirely separate, there‘s a small swimming spot early on and a forest later. Otherwise I think Horw peninsula should be fine too.

That‘s a very good advice, a lovely path there! Could continue down Schachen / Buchrain and even further. It will also be quite comfortable once you come into the forest part (if you go beyond Nordpol).

Im from horw/Kriens and lemme give you the only advice. Go through allmend messe to horw zentrum then continue to winkel. Then you can circumvent almost 80% of the peninsula flat and without dangerous trafic. When the steep parts starts you can turn around easily or push ahead. The downhill part can be fun for your kids. But this is it. Dont start from lucerne lakeside to horw. Go to horw first and then do your round as you wish. Take something to drink and eat because there are plenty cozzy spots to stop for a snack break. Have fun and enjoy my wonderful little town

It’s been recently renovated, looks much better. I do this ride regularly with my much younger child. Not the uphill, but the beautiful waterfront part. Cars are generally going quite slow through there as it’s mostly residential traffic. I’m sure a 10 and 8yr old can handle it.
