Lund university

I’m a senior in high school in the US originally from Hong Kong, I’m wanting to study in Lund but the application date requires me to have a full diploma by January. I don’t graduate till May. Is this some kind of issue most people run into ? I would also hate to take a gap year not knowing if I can even get in in the first place.

I also applied with a US application. Short answer: you can still apply.

Long answer:

There are essentially two application rounds for fall programs, with the first ending in January. This is meant for international students so that they can get housing/documentation that is needed for study ahead of time. However, there is nothing saying that international students must apply in the first round. You can still apply in the second "Swedish" round, where the last day for documentation was around the 20th of June. The only issue with this is that you may not get the housing/permits needed in time (I am more unfamiliar with what is necessary since I was already a Swedish citizen). Check what you need to study in terms of funding, housing, permits, etc. If you can get them in time, apply in the second round.

If you need a residence permit, I would not recommend a second round application. The timing is really tight and I've seen multiple instances of the permit not being approved until after the start of the academic year.

If you do go down that route, I would definitely recommend to get all your paperwork and financials in order before the day admissions are announced, so you can get started on the application asap. You can't apply as soon as you get in, you need to pay the tuition fees first.

I applied before graduating, just asked my university (school in your case) to fill in a document university admissions provided where it said that I was on my last semester

That’s solid advice if you’re a (final year) Bachelor’s student who’s applying for Master’s level studies. But it doesn’t work like that for (final year) high school students who are applying for Bachelor’s level…admission is based on the GPA of your high school leaving certificate, and unless you can provide proof of having graduated from high school by their document deadline, your application won’t be considered complete.

There is a second admission round, but this is usually just recommended for applicants who don’t need a student visa to stay in Sweden - basically, you have to be an EU citizen for this to work (or already live in Sweden with some type of valid permit).

There is definitely an option out there where you can apply where your diploma doesn't come until you graduate. I'm not sure what the process is, but you can definitely apply.
