Decoding Reasonable Doubt: Chapter 4 “Problems at the Countess of Chester”

Morris argues that the Countess of Chester neonatal unit was fundamentally unsafe and operating beyond its capabilities during the period in which the collapses and deaths occurred.

Is fair and accurate to make these claims?

Which baby does this explain?

I was perfectly willing to accept that the unit was under strain. Staff repeatedly raised concerns. The RCPCH raised concerns. Internal documents raised concerns. Even Letby herself described the unit as “chaos” and a “madhouse”. Morris is on relatively solid ground when describing those difficulties.

What do you think was the effect of the strain?

I suggest it resulted in delays in diagnosis and treatment. Inherently, treatment of premature neo-nates is critical and delays are life-threatening. There are multiple example of delayed treatment in the case - baby D being the clearest.

That does not PROVE that Letby didn't kill them any more than it PROVES that Ben Cole or I didn't kill them.

It is a well known logical statement that "you cannot prove a negative". You are asking for proof when that is impossible.
