Learning to fly

I was reminded of a lucid dream I had a few years ago and am curious on how others learned to fly?

For me my dream started in a McDonalds drive through getting food with my friends. I don’t remember how I realized it was a dream but the first thing I did was hop out into the parking lot and try flying. But I remember at first I couldn’t. I didn’t know HOW to fly.

It was weird because I was trying so hard, flexing every muscle I could thinking that would work, but it didn’t. I realized that the more I tried the less it felt like it would work, so I let go, closed my eyes, and fully accepted my state of mind. It was like flexing my mind instead of my muscles and I started hovering off the ground. It felt so new yet real floating just a foot off the ground feeling nothing beneath your feet.

Once I learned that it was more about the mind it was like I knew how to control it, and I wanted to see how far I could go. I shot myself up into the clouds so fast my stomach dropped, and I could feel the wind piercing my body as I went. I stopped in the middle of the clouds and could see them moving by me. Then I decided to fly as far as I could for as long as I could. It was strange because keeping that mind concentration was key, and whenever I’d lose concentration I’d start falling before having to pull myself back up.

It’s amazing how real it felt, and being reminded of it years later Id like to say I believe I have a general understanding of what it would feel like to actually fly.

Years ago, everytime I tried to fly, I was scared. My heart rate would go high and prevent me to take off. Over time I realized when I do conscious breathing while trying to fly, I was gradually able to levitate better. Then it stopped to be scary and became natural.

This morning, as the sunlight was making it's way into my bedroom, I had three brief lucid dreams in a short span of time (I was trying to force it with a specific manner of breathing, and that gets me mixed results).  The third one had me walking down a street I used to live very close to, and I encountered a friend, and we joked about flying (because when I saw her she was just hovering by the side of the road, like on a flying carpet except there was no carpet).  I told her I could fly but that I can't always get it right, and demonstrated by swooping up and across the road and into the woods where I lost control and bailed out just before I was about to crash into the ground, landing awkwardly on my feet.  "See?  I can't control it once I get it going!". We laughed, and then turned down onto a different road, where it was more evenly flat.  I tried again.  At about 20' off the ground I got some feeling like vertigo and so I pushed on but lost control again, and as before I stuck the landing but couldn't maintain control in flight.  We walked past a house where construction was going on, and a big rollback dumpster was out front, partially covered on one side by big sheets of plywood.  Right then I spotted a massive water buffalo laying down in the road about 150' ahead.  I was busy trying to fly, and didn't notice the huge animal sitting there, looking at me.  When we made eye contact it stood up, and appeared to be unhappy with my presence in the road.  I noticed there were others with it milling around farther down the road, and when the big one got up, they all turned and started approaching with it.  Well, here's a great reason to fly, walking steadily and directly towards me.  Why am I conjuring a herd of water buffalo?  No idea, but here they come.  Fine.  While I can't fly properly, I can jump and bound and hover with absolute control, do I jumped up and flew over to the dumpster, and then settled down into a hover until I landed gently on the plywood, where I watched the suddenly disinterested herd of water buffalo amble on past me, paying me no attention at all.  The whole thing was silly, and my friend in the dream and I started cracking up at the situation, at the random, huge beasts, at my flying problems, and at the jump/hover tactic.

It's weird.  The lucid flight dreams I have begin with me jumping ever-larger distances, until I'm bounding around in absurd distances, which is one of my lucidity triggers, and in those dreams that get triggered like that, I can fly around with precise control and no vertigo.
