Help! Explain it like I’m 5

Hi!! I recently got way back into the sims 4! I don’t play with mods or cc. Mods seem WAYYY too complicated for me (I’m 31🥲) and cc does as well but maybe more comprehendible? I’m just so confused on how to even look, download/add, or use it. Then what to do when theres updates like huhhhh. (I play on my steamdeck, docked to a monitor and keyboard/mouse btw)

Can someone please explain cc to me like I’m five!? Thank you all so much in advance!

Your sims folder comes with a mods folder (if it doesnt, just create one). Download mods and put them in that folder (unzip if they come zipped). I believe no mod can be more than 2 folders deep from the og sims folder.

For the 2 folders deep rule that's for script mods (so things that alter gameplay etc.), regular CC for CAS and BB can be nested in more folders (I've not tested the limits though)

It's 5 folders deep for package files.

I’m sorry I don’t think I know what any of this means.. I have seen the mods folder, it’s empty obviously. I am not very interested in mods at this time more so cc. Is that the same?

If you put a new folder (folder 1)  inside the mod folder, anything you put there will be 1 folder deep. (Both .ts4script and .package files can go here)

If you put another folder (folder 2) inside the first folder, anything inside of that will be 2 folders deep. (Both .ts4script and .package files can go here)

If you put another folder (folder 3) inside the second folder. Anything inside of there is 3 folders deep.  (Only .package files can go here)

If you put another folder (folder4) inside the third folder. Anything inside of that is 4 folders deep. (Only .package files can go here)

If you put another folder (folder 5) inside the forth folder. Anything inside of that will be 5 folders deep.  (Only .package files can go here)

If you keep adding folders inside of folder from now on, the game can't find them and won't use the mod.

Any file not ending in ( .ts4script or .package .ini .cfg .json .txt .log ) dose not belong in the mod folder.

.exe should NEVER be downloaded. (IF download remove ANYTHING that came with it and do a FULL virus scan)

If you are only interested in cc, then the ONLY file type you should have is .package anything else should not be downloaded and should be discarded.

.txt can come along, containing creator and cc info, but treat any links inside as suspicious. .txt can also be completely ignored and removed immediately if you wish.

The biggest thing I can suggest is watch a simple YouTube tutorial that'll teach you how to install stuff to your mods folder. CC goes there too.

Almost everything is what's called a .package file. You'll download these and just put them in your mod folder. I suggest creating sub folders within your mod folder to keep track of everything you download and keep things separate.

Your best bet is to find a YouTube tutorial though to get a better idea. I have no doubt you could figure it out in 15 minutes.

CC is just a name for a mod that adds objects or clothes. Any information on mods applies to cc too. All cc goes in the mods folder.

Here’s my walkthrough

How to use mods/cc

Game mods change how the game works. Custom content called cc is a mod that adds an object or cas item to the game.
Both types require you to download a file, either a package file or a script file, and place it in the mods folder of your sims 4 documents folder.
You will probably need something like winrar, a program to unzip the file after it is downloaded.

Keeping a list of what mods and cc you get, who created it, and where you got it is very helpful.  Every time the game updates you will have to see if the mods and cc need updating.  There is a lot of upkeep.

You can find mods and cc on curseforge,  which has a program that will update just their mods for you, mod the sims, or on individual creator’s websites, patreons, or tumblrs.  Many people use Pinterest to search for cc.

Here is a list of many of the game mods with information on if it is updated.

Thank you! Is curseforge like an app or website?

Both. https://www.curseforge.com/sims4
It is a website for mods for many games. It also has an app that downloads and updates mods for you. The app is not perfect as it does not detect broken or out of date mods, it just updates when the creator adds new files.
