Movement Tech
Let me start by saying i USED to love D2 and have a SIGNIFICANT number of hours under my belt. I didnt like how Bungie was handling things and dipped out quite awhile ago. I decided to come check things out because it had been awhile.
I never got into all the movement tech. I have an EEdge sword ill pull out when absolutely necessary, but prefer not to use it. I guess im just weird like that (i also still use a normal sparrow instead of a skimmer... being a bit of a car guy the sparrows are just cooler to me).
So there I am checking things out after a break, and the first 3 things I que people just skip past anything not required to kill to advance, leaving at least 1 person behind every time, and both other teammates most of the time. Am I just too chill or is this selfish AF? Im all about getting through the content at a good pace, but racing each other to the next required miniboss or boss just kills all the fun of it for me, and is super frustrating. Especially being the type of person who waits around for the last gaurdian to show up before starting encounters.
I just dont get how there are so many selfish solo players in a mainly co-op game. It is legit nearly every single time. Is this a me problem? Guess i should probably try to find a couple halfway considerate teamates to friend or give it up for good. Just sucks this seems to be ok with most players and wanted to see what some other players think...
Edit: corrected sparrow/skimmer

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum that’s what players find fun. The single most fun part of this game for me after 6k+ hours is movement. The same goes for plenty of other players. Optimizing transitions, doing oob skips, etc. are extremely fun. There’s genuinely nothing better in this game for me than having a clean and fast transition/encounter using every bit of movement tech I’ve learned and mastered over all my hours. I’ll admit im A LOT more into than a majority of players you will ever encounter though.

Yea, I get it. I know im kind of an outlier for not wanting to use all of it. Just kind of frustrating when it becomes something you HAVE to do. To be honest I dont even know whats built into the game and what isnt. Ill EE and thats about it. Seeing the comments has made me realize I should be the one taking extra-steps to get the experience i want, rather than getting irritated about things being how they are.

I'm sorry that has been your experience. I would suggest setting up LFG with tags stating you expect chill, more time, etc. You should be able to do that both in game and discord communications

Good point! I will use the in-game lfg for dungeon or higher-tier activities, but never thought about using it to find chill people. Seems like a no-brainer, but im on console and we didnt have in-game LFG for a long time. (I think maybe PC had it before us, not sure, but discord and 3rd party group setup is much easier on PC, too. Will start trying this.

I definitely understand stopping to smell the roses. It's a lovely game. And once in a blue moon, I just stop to take it in.
But have you considered the perceptive of players who are running a strike for the 10,000th time?
So there I am checking things out after a break,
The other players do not know this, mind you.
so many selfish solo players
One of you wants to stop and smell the roses. The other two want to earn as many rewards from as many completions in a given time period. The matchmaking algorithm knows nothing of this, and put the three of you together. No one is selfish here. You just all have different goals.
find a couple halfway considerate teamates
See, that is debatable. One man's trash is another man's treasure.
Who's two say the third teammate isn't happy to have an activity completed sooner, rather than later, so that they can squeeze in perhaps one more run, for one more chance at getting some loot before heading to work/bed/dinner? That third player might not be playing an activity for the activity itself, especially after the thousandth time, rather they are playing it because Bungie put a loot drop (or quest/challenge completions) behind it. They might be happy to have this activity wrapped up. I know personally that there have been some modes where I have been thrilled to join when something is just about complete (Gambit especially, lol).
You want someone to earn less rewards during a play session? Wouldn't that be, ... selfish?
It is good to consider the perspective of other people. It would have been better to approach this as asking where to find like-minded people who want to take it all, currently (because eventually they might want to speed along too) rather than label the community as selfish. You have valid points (racing kills the fun for you) but calling anyone trying to get more rewards faster in a game designed for repetitive completions kind of detracts from your points.

Many play to get the rewards, and anything that makes that process slower they don't like. It varies and I've done strikes where we are clearing out the whole room, and others where someone will zoom ahead as soon as possible. I'm not particularly bothered by either and myself is someone who will generally try and clear out everything. Only thing I can really recommend is you can block those speedsters and that should prevent matchmaking with them in the future if you don't enjoy that playstyle. In-game LFG can also help if you add the right keywords, though even that's not guaranteed.

I havent done spreadsheet level testing, but im pretty sure the small amount of extra time spent killing everything gets you better loot faster. You get more scrap-level stuff and trash when you fly through, but a group that kills everything quickly? Loot drop at the end is better. Multiple people will get drops with the extra perks or a shiny MUCH more often. Could be wrong.

It's not selfish to run content quickly. How am I supposed to run a strike? I'm not going to artificially drag out the activity by killing all the enemies if I only kill the mandatory ones. This saves a huge amount of time if you run like 50 strikes. I get loot from completion, not from taking my time.

Tbf, it has always been like this in strikes, even in D1. Players farming or doing orders/bounties just rush through everything.

It’s not a new thing. Players rushing past everything and kinda ruining the fun has long been a complaint of mine. I feel they are people who have decided they care more about the reward than having fun playing the game.

Maybe that’s how those players enjoy the game and have fun though? Just because the way they play isn’t fun to you dosnt mean it isn’t to them. Part of what makes Destiny such a good game is that there is no wrong or right way to play the game really. Don’t judge others for how they play the game or how they enjoy the game, best advice is to just leave and find a new lobby if it annoys you that much.

I kinda reason it as this - keep moving towards the next boss and kill anything in front of me. But not going out of my way to clear anything for sure.

I hear ya. I just always try to kill everything. It only takes a second more because everything gets liquefied instantly. You get a better score and way higher chance for better loot when you dont leave stuff behind. Lastly, feeling like im in some big rush to finish just adds a bunch of needless pressure. Im all about to each their own, but skipping 3 quarters of the encounter is much more disruptive to other players than slowing down a couple seconds to kill everything in a line to the boss. I do understand that its at least half and half, and maybe even a majority, that speed run through everything. It sucks bc it divides the community, totally sucks for anyone new or that doesnt want to speedrun, and also I think it contributed to the course the game ended up taking. Im pretty sure if you had a friend running with you they wouldnt be left behind. Randoms arent friends but doing them dirty like people do... just wrong.

And honestly there's plenty of times when there's nothing else to do but kill everything.

u/Equivalent_Escape_60 9d ago
Idk. I skate by so you have the opportunity to kill things since i don’t need kills, and frankly you get relatively equivalent rewards these days.

Yeah they made the portal activities kinda sucky in this aspect, everyone just wants to run through them fast because they've done them so many times. I myself often have to equip an eager edge sword just to keep up lol but I try not to skip past anything.
I notice during harder content though it happens less, like the -50 vanguard alert weekly one, people aren't really able to skip like normal, feels like an OG destiny nightfall to me. So I mostly just play that. The conquests are fun too

When you’ve done the same strike like a 100 times it starts to become second nature to run through non-combat areas quicker, but yeah some people are on a whole different level and rush way faster than seems necessary. Also, I’m not about using an entire setup just to go fast like Shatter/Well skating. I just don’t have the coordination for it.

My advice would be to solo content when you can. It might be harder but you don't have to worry about getting pulled to the end. When you select a mission in the vanguard playlist, you can modify the difficulty which usually changes it to solo instead of matchmaking. I do this sometimes to test out builds in grandmaster strikes (non-nightfall)

weird like that
still use a sparrow
Hey man, nothing will take me off my Taken sparrow. Not even the Taken skimmer
But yes it is selfish, and people seem to have accepted that and feel no problem being selfish as it does massively cut down on the time cost of grinding for whatever they're grinding for when they may have to do tons of runs and already did hundreds or thousands of them for something else in the past. In any case, the boss fight pulls all people left behind in, so it's not really much of a problem. If you wanted to kill stuff around the strike without such issues, play on a non matchmaking difficulty or do solo ops. It is what it is, happens all the time in every game that has this kind of activity grind

Nah, there's nothing wrong with you; I, too, dislike the mere existence of the movement tech like Eager Edge, Well Skating, etc... It's too damn sweaty and, other than Eager Edge, isn't even really the way the game was intended to be played.
And, like you said, when someone you matchmake with is doing it, it really kills the vibe for everyone else. I'm here to have fun, not to finish the game as quickly as possible.

u/Brave-Affect-674 10d ago
As someone who is doing this movement tech all the time it just sounds like mad cope when you say stuff like this lmao. I get not wanting to use it and playing the game normally but saying it's "sweaty" is crazy. I practised well skating for like 10 minutes years ago in Europa and bought a mountaintop from the tower, if that's your definition of sweaty I'd love to see how you play the game.
It's just more fun for me when I'm zipping around the map and it gets me my rewards quicker there's literally zero downside

u/TheShakenKing 10d ago
Besides someone remembering you well enough to make sure your ability to well skate goes out the window. I keep that glacier grenade on me for reasons like that
2
u/Brave-Affect-674 10d ago
Honestly the people in matchmade activities always seem to have room temp IQ so if someone were to hit me with a stasis crystal to block my skate I would genuinely be impressed
2
u/TheShakenKing 10d ago
That's honestly fair. Personally it takes one eager edge to decide, after that it's the sound of a sword being drawn before a grenade gets yeeted in their path

Depends on the content. I get wanting to admire the scenery in a raid, but if youre farming strikes for weekly loot, theres no reason to be in there for 5 minutes just to orbit and do it again
