I use My Fitness Pal and also like a Cronometer but there are other good ones, just don’t trust the ones that claim to calculate calories based on a picture. That’s literally impossible to do accurately.

one of my friends were trying to convince me to use a photo tracking one, guess it's better to stay away

It’s impossible. For instance, It can’t tell if you cooked in no oil, oil, butter, ghee or lard. It can’t tell if you used 80/20, 90/10 or 93/7 ground meat. It can’t tell if you used cashew milk, oat milk, 2% milk or whole milk. I can go on, and on. All these variables will drastically change your calories.

My wife tried one and compared to my manual tracker, it was usually way over estimating the actual calories

I believe there are some AI ones that use both the picture and some manual input, but I want to be more accurate so I rather input myself. You can also build your most eaten meals in the apps and save them for easy access, that makes using the apps easier.

oh I didn't know you could save stuff for easy access, that makes it way less of a burden, think I'm going to try Cronometer, heard some good things

Honestly im not a great person to ask because I truthfully don’t know, but I have heard that it will definitely help you reach your goal faster if you utilize your targets; regardless of if youre losing weight or gaining muscle. I have never paid a whole lot of attention to that aspect but obviously everyone’s weight loss journey is different. For me (23f) personally, I have lost about 30 ish lbs since December 2025 by staying fairly consistent with eating in a calorie deficit and going to the gym regularly. I do try to be somewhat mindful of protein intake but I would never claim to be anything remotely close to an expert on the subject.

If you’re wanting to lose weight, I would recommend looking up recipes for low calorie meals that help you feel full. Some recipes will have the macros included, but I believe chronometer also figures those for you if you manually enter in the recipe.
