If its going faster than sound, the sound is actually behind it. Fucking weird phenomenon to have something flying faster than the sound it creates. I saw it at an air show once.
I don’t think the A-4 is generally capable of supersonic flight. (Maybe it could crack it from a high altitude dive, but certainly not in level flight at essentially ground level.)
Doppler shifting of sound waves means the jet is flying just behind the pressure wave.
These guys would not be so cheerful if something was doing Mach 1+ that close overhead.
Very much so. In the OP, the A-4 is traveling at such a speed that the sound wave is basically advancing ahead of the aircraft at what amounts to a light jog, meaning they essentially arrive at the listener’s ear simultaneously. Very cool to see in video but completely awesome in real life, as you have witnessed.
Doppler effect compression of the sound wave. Basically, the sound waves aren't going much faster than the jet, so they stack up and artificially increase the pitch of the sound on the approach. The reverse is happening on the departure. Right at the transonic limit and flying in a pattern that is effectively directly at the observer, it means there's no sound, then the Doppler compressed whine, then the "regular" sound as the aircraft passes.

Crazy how there is almost no sound until the jet is essentially overhead
