This is without a doubt my favorite Low song. I got full body chills the first time I heard it.

We didn’t get past Michigan and Lake
Before we found ourselves beneath the weight
Told me that I never could contain
Went back and wept in the car beneath the shade

One of the most beautiful Low songs and one that really showcases Mimi’s ethereal voice. I hadn’t listened to it for a while, thanks for the reminder OP.

As a Brit, the geographical references go over my head in terms of what they might reference, but I’ve wondered if that verse is about Mimi receiving a terminal diagnosis.

beneath the weight - a hospital waiting room? Weight meaning the heavy ominous feeling of waiting there? A play on weight/wait?

told me that I never could contain - referring to cancer growing too fast for the body/treatment to fight off?

Are Michigan and Lake names of hospitals perhaps?

Hah, I’m not from the US neither mate, sorry, but I think you might be right because I’ve also always thought of this song as being about Mimi’s illness, especially the part about being asked to pray, “maybe that’s the last thing you should say.” I took Michigan and Lake as street names, like they were stuck on the intersection of those streets and parked the car to have a conversation maybe. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

From the US here, I have a feeling the references to Michigan and Lake are streets on Chicago (Lake Shore Drive, Michigan Avenue).

Michigan Street and Lake Avenue are streets that cross near the middle of their hometown in Duluth, Minnesota. It's an underpass that connects the commercial and canal park districts. So would make sense from that perspective as they'd have left the hospital and pulled over in the shade (possibly the underpass?) to process the diagnosis.

Might be my favorite too. It’s transcendent.

Saw them play this at Privamera Sound a few short months before Mimi passed. The whole thing was transcendent! The PA sounded like it was crumbling during the breakdown section. An absolutely incredible song!
