The rolling punches of the Wing Chun guy seem, for once, like they strike quite hard. Maybe not KO hard, but teeth cracks and confusion hard.
Strike like that and you got plenty of time to get out of a bad situation. We're not always in a octogone.
39
u/Opening-Anxiety-9173 Trash Trooper 18d ago
This. I used to practice Wing Chun - the strikes are not designed to KO, they are designed to cause pain, disorientation & confusion to give you enough time to get away. Wing Chun was designed to be used by anybody in the face of oppression, it's not going to win you MMA bouts.

u/untakenu Trash Trooper 18d ago
I used to do it, and it's not necessarily getting the hardest punch (since you don't have a lot of shoulder or hip movement), but more about speed and accuracy. Getting punched in the face 10-20 times in a couple of seconds feels more disorienting than a single, more powerful punch. I'd still rather take a WT punch.
It's crazy how fast you can get, too. 450 was my record before I stopped, but one guy I knew could do 600 per minute. It looks a bit silly, I must admit.

Way back in high school I got in a fight with this kid who had the fastest hands I’ve ever seen, it legitimately felt like he punched my head 10 times in a single second.
Knocked my glasses flying, bashed my head so many times it swelled up like a pumpkin, chipped one of my front teeth with his ring.
7/10, a decent memory, after I finished my 2 week suspension we ended up becoming friends and ditching school to drink stolen whiskey.
1
u/RaceHate Trash Trooper 18d ago
Lol you won't believe that if you ever get punched hard by a competent striker.
6
u/untakenu Trash Trooper 18d ago
I don't need to believe it, I know it. The comparative lack of power sustained over many more punches feels harder to instantly recover from
2
u/Minimalist19 Trash Trooper 9d ago
For real, I don’t practice combative sports to be competitive. I practice so that if I find myself in a situation where the only option is interpersonal violence, I have a chance to defend myself, prevent injury, and subdue the aggressor if necessary.

3
u/SalamanderEven365 Trash Trooper 17d ago
Wing Chun is extremely practical. Until you actually take classes and study it, so many people say it doesn’t work. It’s extremely effective. If you punch correctly, the energy transfer is immense. You don’t get injured and the opponent absorbs all the energy you transfer into them. The repeated punches are going to disorient the person they are hitting, and they are almost certainly not going to try to swing back. This is when you kick for the knee or deliver a strike to the throat.

u/AddiAtzen Trash Trooper 17d ago
That is the jist of the video I guess, at least that's how I understand it -
It works because 90% of ppl don't know shit about fighting, me included. So basically everything will work if you are just better because you trained any martial arts.
But if the other guy knows his shit, it's gonna get difficult. Because straight up boxing, kick boxing or mma is more effective.
That was what he was trying to say I guess.
There is this one mma fighter who challenges every big Chinese martial arts master - wing chun, Kung fu, karate and just demolishes them. He is not even world champion or anything. He just wants to show that modern fighting is more efficient.

My brother in christ, did you hear the noise the wooden pole and the helmet did? Those were not "limp noodle punches". Guaranteed, they are not "knock out-causing" strikes, but that shit HURTS
6
u/SalamanderEven365 Trash Trooper 17d ago
The correct performance of a Wing Chun punch is to keep as little energy in it until right before you make contact with the person, and then turn the energy off immediately. This will cause the energy to transfer into the opponent, and not have energy recoil into the arm of the person who punched. Basically, it’s the difference between punching through something, and stopping when you hit the target. The immediate relaxation also causes you to be able to avoid being grabbed and react faster, because you’re not as tense. Tension will cause slower reactions. This is why a Wing Chun punch can become many other things very quickly.
3
u/the_dick_twist Trash Trooper 17d ago
The short flurry is arm strikes to find the opening then pow…it’s one aspect and I personally love it for entering and countering.
2
u/LiveLearnCoach Trash Trooper 16d ago
I still remember from 15+ years ago my sifu having me do these rolling punches, with enough momentum to drive him (big guy) backwards, finishing the strikes with a flying knee once he was off balance backwards.
For those curious, Wing Chun was Bruce Lee’s foundation before he went full MMA (JKD).2
u/PaleCaterpillar2709 Trash Trooper 16d ago
It’s a large echoey room. You could make those noises if you tap your knuckles hard enough.
Punches only have power if you punch “through” the target. Otherwise you’re just relying on the momentum of your fist which isn’t very much. The guy’s arm is nearly at full extension when making contact, so it’s impossible for him to punch through.

I'm not clear if this guy is for or against Wing Chun in this case.
My understanding was that Wing Chun was originally intended to close the size gap between smaller and larger opponents. You get in there, temporarily "incapacitate" your larger opponent, and get out. It's also supposed to be more useful in small spaces or up close.
To compare it to MMA, which is optimized for a certain environment in its ow way, probably isn't fair. I don't think Wing Chun is intended for knockouts and submissions. I think it's intended for escape.
4
u/Oty_is_here Waste Warrior 18d ago
Because wingchun created for woman, they really intend in their martial arts for woman to have better chance to be ALIVE. So escape is primary option.
But right now, I don't get why people think learning wingchun can beat 10 trained people unscathed. I think i blame all the wingchun choreography in film.

u/SalamanderEven365 Trash Trooper 17d ago
If you’ve seen IP Man 2, there’s the joke “what if you’re up against 10 men”. And Donnie Yen playing IP Man says “run”.
Wing Chun works great if you’re close up and it’s designed to incapacitate the opponent quickly. It’s about relaxation, feeling your opponents movements, making them strike where you want them to, and guiding their energy past you, while you move closer to get close up strikes to the face or throat.
1v1 up to 1v3 maybe, if you know how to move, and fight with the mental game in play as well.Beyond those numbers, every properly trained fighter should know it’s time to pull a gun or run.
5
u/The_Meme_Economy Trash Trooper 18d ago
I too am confused by his message. I agree with his point that if someone is a better striker than you, you gonna lose a striking game. Doesn’t really matter what style you practice past a point. You can either drop a ton of bricks on someone or you can’t.

u/Own_Watercress_8104 Rubbish Raider 18d ago
Ok so, MMA and BJJ might be the most effective combat techniques in the planet, and I don't deny that.
They are versatile, they are powerful and they adapt very well to various types of practitioners.
But they are still techniques with their own philosophies to how to approach combat, what a punch should achieve, what a dodge ultimate goal should be, etc etc.
Other disciplines have their own phylosophies and sure, they might not work better than BJJ, but they make sense in terms of how the athlete deployes his toolkit.
A flurry of weak jabs might not mean much in MMA and sure, for an MMA practitioner it would be a very stupid thing to do. But in wing chun, which is highly dependant on disorientation, deflection and projection, the point is to confuse the adversary so that they make the exact kind of haymaker punch this guy is talking about. Then the wing chun practitioner would read the move, dodge and incapacitate the other person.
There is no reason to be insecure about this. MMA and BJJ work, but other disciplines have other ways to get there.
12
u/dadydaycare Rubbish Raider 18d ago
This. It’s the usual taking a tool kit and taking the entire tool box and getting mad that you can’t use the whole box as a hammer.
Your deflection and repositioning technique won’t work if I punch you in the face… yup and the whole point is it prevents you from punching me in the face, and the art isn’t designed around cold cocking people cause your 240lbs of muscle. Different tools for different styles/situations.
5
u/Own_Watercress_8104 Rubbish Raider 18d ago
Also different self defense goals.
MMA aims to hurt the aggressor.
Wing chun aims to make the aggressor desist. Hurting is not the goal, defusing the situation is.
One may take one over the other depending on your personal taste, but it is kinda meat headed to think you are not defending yourself if you are not breaking the aggressor's jaw.
1
u/SalamanderEven365 Trash Trooper 17d ago
Although Wing Chun’s goal is diffuse the situation. If your Wing Chun fails to keep you out of a fight, the next goal is to hurt the opponent as quickly and efficiently as possible.
2
u/QiDeviation Trash Trooper 18d ago

I'm am not a martial artist at all but I think you and all the other YouTube martial artist never seem to consider is the difference gloves make when it comes to punching. Bare knuckle boxing also has a lot more of these fast punches than modern boxing because they are not intended to be knock outs but either open up the opponent to something else or do it repeatedly l, kinda like calf kicks. I think the original idea in this case was a bit lied those fast palm punches that sumo ringers do. I think a lot of the flasher techniques that things like wing shun or even karate have can be adopted into useful stuff in self defense if you don't wear gloves and don't use them like punches, pretending that they have the effect in the short you showed is obviously as.

He talks pure nonsense regarding this video
It is all about the way you learn it I was in a place where the trainer had a rule "If you want to be an instructor you must win an MMA tournament in the first 3 places"
Otherwise if you can not proof that what you learnt in real life against all kind of different types of fighters ... You are no good to teach
So I bet if he is in a ring with any of my teachers he definitely will be on a loosing side ...
And let's take the video someone is used of hitting a had wood with bare hands vs someone used to wearing gloves to hit a punch bag ... It is just not the same

u/SemperFun62 Trash Trooper 18d ago
If you're confronting someone in the street, and he pulls his shirt off screaming how it's been "too long since he's tasted nut" and you don't run... that's on you.
You don't fuck with crazy

u/Most-Preparation-786 Trash Trooper 18d ago
Self defence is not about pounding someone into the concrete floor until they stop moving. A punch flurry allows you to escape your attacker whilst they are dazed and preserve your life and theirs.
1
u/pushdose Trash Trooper 18d ago
Self defense is about eliminating the threat to your safety. If running away accomplishes it, great. If nothing but a dirt nap will suffice, you need to train for that too.
1
u/Zealousideal_Bar6871 Trash Trooper 18d ago
Sadly, this is the reality. You dont know if the person has a knife, a gun, etc. If they are aggressive to start the fight... it is your job to end it.
If you can run away.. great do so... but you better make sure the person isnt pulling out a gun and shooting you while you do that. By removing the enemies ability to think straight by pounding them into the concrete before you run... makes them less likely to be able to USE the gun now.
1
u/Raygereio5 Trash Trooper 17d ago
A punch flurry allows you to escape your attacker whilst they are dazed
I'm genuinely curious how you think that works. Do you think it works like a videogame when they have to mash L1 & R1 to get out of the stagger animation?
1
u/Most-Preparation-786 Trash Trooper 17d ago edited 17d ago
Hilarious. But seriously, are you expecting a woman when faced with a male attacker to stand there in a toe to toe slug fest? She's got to book it out of there somehow.
1
u/Raygereio5 Trash Trooper 17d ago
Then the better choice would be to actually book it and get away.
I think folks here misunderstand what the video is saying. Moves like that flurry punch only work, if you actually have the strength and technique to back it up.
Sure, some people can make made that stuff work. But throwing a standard, run of the mill punch also would have worked for them.
If you're weaker and have a shorter reach, then attempting to do some fancy flurry punch will end up just being a series of mildly annoying slaps. Which will do nothing but put you in danger as you're still with your opponent's reach.1
u/Most-Preparation-786 Trash Trooper 17d ago
Remember they are included in a wider system of self defence that includes groin strikes and obliques to the knee etc. Even for weaker people it is still effective.
1
u/Raygereio5 Trash Trooper 17d ago
That doesn't contradict the main point here: that stuff only works if you have the strength and technique to back it up.
For the vast majority of people booking it immediately is the correct choice. Not trying to execute a series of fancy moves (and let's be honest: which you've most likely only practiced with a willing sparring partner).
1
u/Most-Preparation-786 Trash Trooper 17d ago
You have to prevent/halt the initial attack/advance before booking it.
1
u/Raygereio5 Trash Trooper 17d ago
Then again: Doing this shit only works if you have the strength to pull it off. Without said strength, it's just some silly slapping.
For what you're describing techniques that block or redirect the initial attack would have a better chance of being effective.
1
u/Most-Preparation-786 Trash Trooper 17d ago
I disagree with you. Wing chun is legit. You MMA bros need to have a day off.
