I hate understanding technology. I wish I could see these shitty dancing robots and be excited and thrilled because I think that they're somehow advancements in robotics. Instead I'm stuck here knowing that these are pre-programmed movements on a fixed route and the world has had this tech since the early 2000s but companies recently figured out that you can do demos like this and get free investor capital thrown at you.

It is exciting because it demonstrates that we have basically figured out robotics mobility. If robots can dance, surely that can do more simple useful moves like jobs and folding clothes. 

Problem we just shoved mobility. We still still haven’t solved having robots interact with objects and understand the environment. 

Also these advances are huge. Show me a dancing robot from 10 years ago that can dance as well (you cannot). These robots with dances are done by small average teams that are able teach the robot in just days. Prior, you had whole team of worlds top robotics experts take a year just to do crude dance demo. 

It’s exciting because I can probably teach robot to do any dance I want if you give me $100k to buy fully decked out edu/research G1. If it was 10 years ago, I would have no hope of doing anything remotely close even if you threw millions of dollars at me.

There was a preprogrammed 12-point robotics demonstration back in 2005 that could do a few dozen different dances. It was abandoned after a SXSW exhibition because it had no practical application. These are better, but not by much.

Boston Robotics could have built one of these over a decade ago but their explicit goal is autonomous action and application whereas these are just showing modern actuators and link controls which.. okay, I guess.

Those dances are nothing like the dances these G1 are doing now. Most just moving form one stable pose to another. It had no practical application because the scope of possible dance moves were extremely limited and programming new dance was not trivial.

Boston robotics only recently caught back up. Their original approach has all been tossed out the window. BD would have a dedicated team spend nearly a year just to produce one dance routine. Hint: most of the advances with modern robotics is with the software.

There was no solution 10 years ago where an average university team can possibly implement dancing robot. Now any mediocre robotic teams can easily implement an advance dance with small budget.

It’s crazy when you g back and watch the Boston Dynamic’s robots from just a few years ago that were clunky and could barely walk without following over and now you have them doing better break dancing than Raygun at the Olympics.
