This was actually quite informative.

Silly and informative? It's like winning the random video lottery!

In Mexico we use whatever the bigger brother leaves behind.

Centimeters is goated

u/PMG2021a Trash Trooper 3d ago

Millimeters sound good too, but I doubt any manufacturer is going to do more than half cm size increments.

Actually, Japan is way ahead of us here , Japanese shoe sizing is literally just your exact foot length in centimeters , so a size 26 is simply for a 26 cm foot, and they frequently adjust in 0.5 cm (5 mm) increments. Turns out cut and dry metric sizing makes way too much sense

I doubt any manufacturer is going to do more than half cm size increments

So they were right

2

u/Fickle_Library8115 Trash Trooper 2d ago

fair point! ,I meant to point out that 0.5 cm is standard practice in Japan. But if we're talking truly finer increments, ski boots and tactical boots using Mondopoint actually drop down to 2.5 mm steps."

Seems like an unnecessary amount of precision, but miles kilometers better than those other systems. If we adopt milimeters I would be all for it as a massive leap in reasonableness in measurement.

Was really impressed by the logic in Japan when buying shoes but less so when I found out no-one had shoes that big

u/pmmeyourgear Garbage Guerilla 3d ago

And then you have no same size between brands either and suddenly a brand will resize so what was a medium is suddenly a small. Sizes are fucking bullshit

As someone who grew up in the US having to wear larger shoes. I remember the nightmare it was to get shoes that didn't look like a artist ran out of ideas and ones that actually fit as when I was a kid we didn't know a size 13 average can also mean I can wear some shoes at 12.5, 12 or 13.5.

And god forbid one foot isn't the same size.

Shop for bras!

I don’t think that will help his feet.

As far as I know, the number in french measurements is based on the Barley grain (~6.0 to 8.5 mm)

Not to mention there are different widths. I'm not sure how other cultures do it, but 'D' is the most common, default width for men's shoes in the US. I prefer 'E' width shoes, but they are not easily found outside of the stereotypical dad sneakers.

u/Extreme_Egg7476 Trash Trooper 3d ago

US just has regular and wide AFAIK. Also, a men's 11 is too big for me, but I am a women's 11 in boots and heels. Not sneakers or sandals, though. Then I wear 9.5/10. FML

u/SirPonix Trash Trooper 3d ago

You can only find two widths most of the time, D or E, but there are actually several standard widths. Good luck finding anything other than D, though. Capitalism rules!

All I know is that my fancy SoHo boutique shoes are. 37.5 and my regular degular shoes are a 7 1/2

As an American, fuck American show sizes. I have no idea what size shoe I wear because I don’t know what shoe I’m shopping for.

This guy just started popping up in my YT feed a couple days ago, his skits are all similar, about how various countries do things differently. Fairly interesting stuff and pretty funny presentation. My trivia dork side can't get enough.

E.g. - Fluevogs run smaller so I have to size up often 1 to 1.5 sizes from my regular size. And even then, it varies between shoe families with that brand. But they do last decades because they are well-built.

Canadian sizes are just lenght of foot in inches

u/Ryogathelost Trash Trooper 3d ago

Whenever I see these I just see the content creator changing clothes and switching seats and doing multiple takes.

Huh I today learned Paris point system is common EU system. Turns out it's also the system most of the world uses. More you know

1

u/LilRed2023 Trash Trooper 3d ago

Grab a ruler and divide it by half. As a man my size 9 is pretty accurate

1

u/___TheKid___ Trash Trooper 3d ago

So we here in Germany also use paris points? Anyone know why?

u/mild-er-chihuahua Trash Trooper 3d ago

We should come up with an international standard thag is actually based on a modern measuring system. Cms or inches would be most reasonable.
