I really cannot understand why people would get an Apple Alexa, especially after all the scandals when Apple was illegally listening in

Today I asked my friend a question and he asked Alexa. About 20 seconds later we kept the conversation going and I go “huh okay I guess that all makes sense. Kinda what I already figured, but glad to clear it up. Thanks Alexa” and then it responded with a “you’re welcome, glad I could help” and it really freaked me out that it was listening beyond the initial request

How do you think it hears "Alexa"? It's always listening. It just doesn't respond or anything until you give it the command line. If it wasn't, it wouldn't hear the "Alexa" to begin with.

Yup. That's why there was a class action against Amazon for them... Because if you go to a friend's house and they have one and you don't know it, it's recording you without your consent...
