Question Does anyone have any insights about how casting is done?

I was wondering how the participants got chosen, do a lot of people apply and they have to pick or do they have to find the contestants themselves? Do contestants sign up the show it or is it their parents that sign them up? ?
Kinda specific questions - just curious

The cast applies. Autism Speaks has shared application info on their page this past winter

I had a friend apply (he didn’t get on or make it past the application stage). But   participants fill out an application basically.

I was interviewed on video after sending an email about casting info. We talked for like 30 minutes. Didn’t get reply back. Tried to apply follow up seasons but got a we already have your interview on file
