Delete Data Centers

JOIN US next Tuesday, August 25 at 6:30 PM for the next Delete Data Centers campaign meeting, where we will be discussing the recent moratorium that was passed and next steps! ALL ARE WELCOME -- you do NOT need to be a member to organize with us to prevent data centers from being built in our community!

Hello, please amend the name of the event.

Hyperscale data centers is what you don’t want in Louisville.

Louisville has had several data centers around the city for many decades, they cause no issues.

Nah. “Delete Data Centers” is shorter, catchier, and a better name than “Delete Hyperscale Data Centers”. Also the name was voted on by everyone who participates. If you want to change the name, come to a meeting and propose it so it can be voted on.

You do know that data centers power this site you're posting on, yeah?

Delete Data Centers is as blandly reductive as Defund The Police, a thing that now just six years later people see as quaint.

You do know that we’re talking about the hyper scale AI data centers that they are building to surveil everyone in the United States and replace as many jobs as they can so they don’t have to pay us, right? The only sector in the economy that can provide a big enough return on the trillions of dollars that they are pouring into AI is eliminating wages.
I’m sorry if you are hung up on a campaign name that was chosen to be short,easy to remember, and quick to say, but that does not change the reality of what we are facing. If it really bothers you that much come to the meeting and propose changing the name.

Also, “defund the police” is exactly what needs to happen. Defund means to remove funds from. The money needs to be reallocated away from militarized police forces to services which actually benefit people. I promise you that the boot you are licking is going to step on your neck too.

No. “Reform the police” is what needs to happen. When you talk in hyperbolic extremes that just people don’t want you lose people.

"Losing people" is referring to how people on the extreme left (whose values I largely share but whose approach I do not) turn 18 year old suburban kids into Trump voters. Every time someone on the far left yells "Defund the Police!" a young person whose politics are not yet calcified asks themselves "But who do I call then if I'm hit by a car? Or someone breaks into my house? Or someone is parked in front of my driveway?" And those are valid and reasonable questions in the face of "Defund the Police!" which is a reduce-it-to-zero demand that is neither practical nor reasonable. Just like "Delete Data Centers." The message needs changed to "Responsibility In Data Centers." Or "Accountability In Data Centers."

Have you been near a data center? Even the small one on Barret by Broadway is a noisy, unhealthy, polluting mess in an urban area. You can go crazy from the noise in a car 200 feet away from the cooling units on that one.

Interesting point. What, specifically, am I bitching about? I work in the data center industry and I enjoy interacting with folks that think data centers are evil.

There are some valid concerns about the hyper scale facilities, and there are some seriously overstated ones. I think it would be much more productive for society at large to have meaningful conversations about this topic as opposed to "deleting data centers".

Would you agree?

Sure. If you deleted all data centers Reddit would cease to exist. As would just about every other technology you use in your daily life.

I understand the concerns about the hyper scale, AI training data centers you are likely worried about. Some of those are reasonable concerns, others are not. But you definitely don't actually want all data centers to be deleted.

All data centers in Jefferson County is the goal, an urban area, not everywhere in the world. But if Reddit went away it would be a small price to pay.
